8 THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 1867. THE CHIGNON CRftWLEBS. Item fiom the Head of the People. The publication of the "Chignon Horror," revealed by a scientific writer in the London Lancti, showing that in every 'waterfall" not composed of the natural hair of the wearer (and possibly in cases even where the hair is natural) there are myriads of parasitic grega rinen, has called out numerous communica tions on the subject, all lively and prolific in suggestions, from which we select the fol lowing: HOT rEDICCLI, BUT ANIMALCULE. Sir: You and the scientific writer in the 1 ndon Lanat are both in error in speaking of the parasites in the "chignons" as pedicui, or Imriakes, or gregarines. Ihey are inertly ani tnatcvlcr, thousands of which may be serii In a Mob I a drop ot water, and of course tailUono oulil be manliest in a "waterfall." Your respectfully, H. HOW OREQARINE3 ARB GENERATED. Sir: It is a great mistake to suppose that the fxdiculi humani capitis are generated in water lulls or chiirnous because these ornament are made Irom loreien hair. The peroration natu fally arihps lrotn the poxition in which the waterfalls are placed upon the head. They are located in Juxtaposition to the bumps of auu liveness, and the warmth of these bumps pro duces the fiediculi at once, and in any quantity, with no apparent exhaustion to the waterfall wearer. If the waterfalls wire worn in any other place on the head, there would be no spontaneous generation of gregarines, thouah the production might continue irom otu-T aud nite natural cau-es. Following our advice, several Indies, whot-e heads have lately been 'examined" in our otlice, are nov avoidine the daneer of wearing tlie'r waterfalls on tb bark ot the head, and are placing them H9 near the top of the head as the present style of bonnets will permit. F. & 8., Phrenologists, et . THE COMPOSITION OF CHIfKNONS. Sir: As one of the preservers of the public peace, 1 deem it my duty to ullay the e.vlte juent growing out of the "chignon horror," by tetailing a faithful account ot a vivisection of a lirst-cla8s waterfall, made by myself on the night of the 10th ultimo. My duties call me to the doorway of some one of the theatres at the close of the even'mg performance. After the last cairiape had driven away from the Arch on the night in question, I turned to go home, and stumbled over what I supposed to be a small boy huddled up in the doorway, and atdeep. Upon examination (after striking it with my baton), I found that it was a large sized waterfall. I took it home, and found it to be composed 01 toe following materials: Item, u piece of an old butlalo robe; item, a hair pillow; item, the lone lost hooks ot Livy; item, a Zouave uniform jacket; the whole enclosed iu an old copy of tde Age, containing that article on "China,'' and covered witb hair. Not even the "pregarines" could stand this collection of chipnon compounds, lor there were none visible either to microscopic examination or to the naked eye. ' Policeman, No. . HOW TO SLAUGHTER TUB OREtiARINES. Sir: I have every reason to believe that -waterfalls are intested with millions of living parasites. Some o( those 'which have been sent to me to be dressed or "made up" literally swarmed with gregarious pediculean burlakes. It is, as the Londou Lancet says, utterly useless to subject the chienons to heat three hundred nor three thousand degrees of heat will not kill the pediciUi. But, eir, my infallible investigator and invigorator, which removes dandruff, re stores the hair to the natural color, cures the tick headache, aud will turn a tin "Saratoga" into an old-fashioned hair mink, is a dead shot alfO to the greaariues. It will (Note. The rest of this valuable communication may pos sibly appear as an advertisement: we arejj quite sure it will not appear in any other form iu our columns.) A CHIGNON "COMMISSION." Sir: There is no doubt whatever that the chignou wearers are not only filling our thea tres, churches, and pnvate houses wita grea rines (peiiieuii humani capitis), but that myriads ol these plagues of Egypt are oouvyed irom one part of the city to the other, and from per son to person, in tne street cars, is there a remedy? In my opinion there is. It is simply to have a "commission" for the eontrol of chig nons. We havp now a street-cleaning commis sion, a commission of health, a commission ot charities Hnd correction, a commission of the lire department, and the daily commission of municipal mistakes without number. Nov let us have a chignon commission, and if such a commission docs not at once remove the grega rines, let the Citizens' Association put forward some volunteer who will gladly and completely do the work for a half million or so of the pub lic money. Yours, etc., A Tax Payer. THE ALTERNATIVE. Sir: I have worn a waterfall night and day, without once removing it, till 1 read your arti cle on the "chignon horror." I then took off my waterfall, gave one look at it, and swooned. 1 nave long felt something moving all over my head, and there has been a con stant tendency on my part to shall I say it ? to scratch 1 I now know the cause. I have abandoned my chignon, and have forbidden the wearing of them by my daughters, l'eaeo and quiet now reign in a lately nearly distracted household. Those who wish for similar happi ness must leave off their waterfalls. The Mother of a Larue Family. Sir: There must be some mistake about no "degree of heat destroying the greijarines." Do as 1 did. Put the waterfall in the stove, close the door about two minutes, then open it, and if you see any "sregarines." or, tor that matter, any waterfall, I am mistaken, that's all. Julia W . We have other and more serious communi cations. An importer of artificial hair writes that the whole "horror" was created to damage his business. rV- r..l ladies send notes of alarm, softened somewhat by the be lief that the "gregarines" are not pedicui i or burlakes, but a much more common bug, known as humbug. It is evident, however, that the idea (if not the gregarines) has got into the heads of the ieojle that waterfalls are generators of pediculi, and we may safely presume that the public mind will by-aud-by h set at rest on this question of national im portance by a report from a Congressional ri.itmon Investigating Committee, or. iKwsi- bly, by a new pla for the general reconstruc tion of wntertaiis ana cnignons.
