    ART IN ROME.
What th Americana ara Doing.
Under date of January 5, "Carleton" writes to
the Boston. Journal a description of what the
American artists there are doing. We quote
portion of this letter:
MB. BTORT.
I.r,JStoryJ" lU8t now brin?lne out a statue
ot Medea the Grecian motner meditating the
destruction of her children. The statue Is not
tar enough advanced to sneak of its merits,
but it promises to take rank with those which
pave already Riven enduring fame to this artist.
It was a great pleasure to stand before his
oust ot Mr. Everett, ordered by the citizens of
Boston, which is to be done in bronze. It is
now in the hands of the founders at Munich.
The size is heroic, and represents bim as he
appeared in the last years of his life, pleading
the cause of the country. Ho stands with one
rm raised, in the attitude which was usual
to him in his loftiest flights of eloquence.
Turn the statue whichever way you please,
and you behold Mr. Everett.
MISS FOLEY.
This artist is enpaged on a medallion of Sena
tor Sumner, and one of Mr. Lonpriellow both
of thim of exquisite workmanship, and true to
life. Am our hjr Ideals is one of the Prophet
Jeremiah, the subject taken from his own
lamentations over the captivity of Israel. It U
not of a pitiful, whining old man, but a mau of
majestic features, venerable of vara, wttu the
countenance of a statesman.
KB. ROPES.
His walls are hung with views and sketches
taken In Italy during the past year. So at
tractive are they that his pictures are taken by
American-visitors qu'le as fust as he can pro
duce them. Among his paintings is a supprb
view of Tivoli, taken from the spot where
Horace lived, the place where he looked out
upon the Sabine Hill and the Campagna.
RANDOLPH ROGERS
has a number of commissions for ''Nvd'a,"
'Isaac" and others of his well known works.
Bis figure of Ruth gleaning is a beautiful figure,
so winning that, it Ruth herself was half as
beautilul, no wonder lioaz singled her out lroin
- all the other gleaners of the whcat-ueld.
Not long since, an English woman, with eye
Class in hand, was trazlue at the statues iu this
etudio, and stopped to admire that entitled
,'The Sentinel" a soldier of the Union, with
bis musket. ,
"Who is that?" she asked.
"That is an American soldier a sentinel
Madame."
'Is it that great General Stonewall Jackson f"
she inquired with great eagerness.
"No, Madame; it is the man who shot Stone
wall Jackson," waj the quiet reply.
MR. HiZELTiNE.
This artist, from Philadelphia, is executing
a statue for the Union League of that city,
entitled "America Honoring the Fallen- Brave."
It is the nguie of a Queen, with wreaths of
laurel and immortelles in her hinds. He has
two companion figures, one representing an
' Indian mother sacrificing her child, the other
a Christian mother bringing her child to the
baptismal font; both in obedience to religion.
Another is entitled ' 'Captivity." the 6ubject
taken from Isaiah, to be followed bv another
representing the return ot the children of
Israel to their beloved land. He has two
others in clay, one entitled "Unerateful Love"
a wayward son, spurning a mother's instruc
tions, breaking away lroni restraint; the other
'Filial Love."
The contrast between all these sublects is very
striking and pleasing. Like his brotuer artists,
Mr. Hazeltine bus quite as much as he can do
to keep pace with the demands of his country--men.
MISS STEBBINS.
In the -studio of Miss Stebbins you may see
one of Longiellow's poems ii marble. Ir is the
Angel Sandallan:
"He gathers the prayers as he stands.
And they turn to flowers in his hands."
Another figure is entitled "Autumn," a child
loaded with grapes. Another, a commission
lrom M. 0. Roberts, of New York, is "Colutn-
, bus" the night before his discovery ot the New
1 World.
MISS HOSME.
Miss Hosmer's studio is exquisitely fitted up.
A magnificent fonntain, of her own design,
stands in one of the rooms, so that with the
pounding of the workmen's hummer, there is
the more melodious music of running water.
The fountain was a commission ordered by
' Lady , of England. Miss Hosraer has in
proeess of execution "The bleeping Faun" and
also "The Waking Faun," two groups, which
she intends to send to Paris lor the Exposition.
These are the only two designs, I believe, in
her studio, except that of the soldier's monu
ment tor St. Louis. She has, however, quite
as much as sue can well attend to In tilling
orders lor copies of statues already favorites
with the public.
MISS LEWIS.
In the studio once occupied by Canova, I
found Miss Edmonia Lewis, who, I presume, is
the only colortd sculptress in the world a lady
perhaps twenty-three years of age, with African
and Indian blood in her veins, She received an
education at Oberlin, Ohio, and spent a short
time, I believe, in New York; then went to
Boston and studied the art by herself, having a
room in the Studio Building, where she modelled
a bust ot Colonel Shaw. With the funds ob
tained from the sale of the busts ordered
by the friends ol Colonel Shaw, and who were
ready also to lend a helping nand, she came to
Borne a little more than a ear ago, ignorant of
the Italian language, and a stranger to the
place. She had already decided what course to
putfcue. She had read Longiellow's "Hiawatha,"
and longed to reproduce in marble the concep
tion of the poet. She modelled two grouDs, the
wooing ana marriase of Hiawatha, and one
figure of NabouiiB. They are between the statue
and lite-size.
A copy of the "Marriage of Hiawatha" has
already gone to New Xoik.
MB. 1VBS
is engaged upon a statue of heroic size of the
late iiishon Brownell. of Hartford, Connecti
cut, which is to be in bronze. It will be cast
at Munich, and will stand in the College
grounds in Hartford.
MB. FBEXMAN.
The onlv finished plcturo which this artist
has on hand is a scene on the morning of the
Tesurrectiou ot Christ, the three iHarys at tne
tomb, the Acgels, and the fleeing Soldiers.
These are the only figures. Mount Calvary,
with Its three crosses, and the city of Jerusa-
1pm. seen in tho red light ot the coming morn'
lug, form the background. It is a wonderfully
enective picture.
