CITY INTELLIGENCE. Inn AnnirioNAi, CITY Itrm HtK PIKTII TAflK. A Feakful Cap of TJKSTirrTroN A Man Lies Ukbituikb in a Mourr for Ti:n IHys and thh Family in a State hp Starvation. One of the moht hoiirtromlmc; case ol destitu tion we bi.vc ever been cnlierl upon to chronicle, is one whi:h was brought to lignt yes'.eMav by infans of a visit paid by one of tlic vi-Uor of the Home MitslotiRry Society to a house In the lower section oi the city. The visitor, on enter ing the premie, dlo'voiT. I the whole family in almost the lact stages ( Miirvatiou, nnd the horror of the secne was heightened ty the dis covery of the npimlline lact Hint the father of the family, who hud tlipil ten day ago, was still nnbuned, irom lack of th" tiorcpsury weans to defray the expenses of sennit lire. I The aillicted fiimlly, by dcnnvinn theaiselycs of the simple t'ool necesarv to support lite, ani by pawning tlie lew thins th';y owned, hud been able to rai-e about ten dollarx, With which sum they secured the service ot an undertaker, who piepared the hody for interment, but reinsert to ! proceed further until the whole bill lor the burial was paid him In mfvntire. This the poor people could not do, and nt the time ot the visit of the humane member of the Home Missionary Society jeoterdny, the (tenth ot the other mem bers ot the family from abject want ceomed im minent. The drca ltul situation of atlairs was discovered in the mornine, and the visitor lost no time in timliny the undertaker, whose re finiiements were speeddy met, the amount ad vanced, und the body atj, ouce decently interred. This cute is ceitaiuly oue of an extraordinary character, but we are as-ured that at the pre sent time many of the ile-ervinir poor are sui teiing creat hardships from lack of employ ment and other causes, which have reduced many of them to penury and utter want. Our citizens have only to kuovv, we are rratitied to vay, that such destitution exists in our midst, in order to relieve it; and to their kind care we commit the pojr and sml'erinc. many of them the widows and orphans of our brave soldiers in the late war, and all of them entitled to our warmest commiserstiou and attention, particu larly at this inclement season. Mr. Thomas T. Mason, the Treasurer of the Aoristion. will receive contributions for tuc relief of those under the care ot the Mis-ion. .Celebration at National Hall. National Hall presented a most brilliant spec tacle last eveuius;, on the occasion ot the trien nial celebration and concert ot the pupils of the schools ol the Christian Brothers. The occa sion was ono of much interest to all assembled, and the immense aud enee present retired at the close of the celebration highly delighted with the evening's entertainment, and lully satisfied with the elliciency and beneficent results emanating from the establishment of the schools ol the Christian Brothers. The exercises commenced with an overture by the tine band of St. Michael's Church, and this was followed by a lengthy programme, consisting of recita tions, songs, trios, duets, and instrumental Eieces, the latter perlormed entirely by the and, composed of small boys belonging to the institution. Alter a chorus by the pupils, tne following1 named young gentlemen distinguished themselves, although all acquitted thcuiselvi s very creditably: Master E. J. Ryan recited "The Last iriends" in excellent style. This was immediately followed by the recitation of ' The Spanii-h Champion," by Master I. tJ. McEvoy, who did well. Master J. McQnald recited "The Dyine Hero" admirably, and "The Patriot's Vindication" was equally well icndcred by Master J. II. Comber. A dialogue, entitled "The lmprestment of aa American (Seaman, " was well recited by Masters .1. McEvoy and J. Bradley; ' The Celtic Tongue" was well dUposed of by Master John F. Lvnch; and "The Union," by Master P. McOettieran, was a tine ellort. Altogether, the celebration was a complete success, and reflects much credit on this deserving and popular relisrious institution, wbic'j is con lined to the Catholic Church, Brothet Oliver, and others connected with these schools, conducted the exercises.
