Death of a Descendant of Columbus.
The Madrid papers announce the death ol' the
Duke of Neraeua, a grandee of Spaiu ol the first
class. The Paris papers, iu reproducing the
news, describe him us "Admiral and Governor
General of the Indies." The deceased Duke was
neither an Admiral nor a Governor of the Indies
or of any other place. These were merely titles
which he inherited from his ancestor, Christo
pher Columbus, or Cristoval Colon, as he is
called iu Spaiu. It is known that Columbus
left two sons, Ferdinand and Dieao; the lormer
illegitimate, who inherited uiuchot his father's
genius, oi whom he lelt a valuable memoir.
The neglect and ingratitude wiih which the
great discoverer was treated by King Ferdinand,
alter the death of Isabella, is a matter of his
tory. His legitimate sou, Dieso, after a long
nnd tedious lawoiiil asainst the Crown, obtained
a decision from the Council of tiie Indies that
he was entitled to the privileges and title3 con
ferred upon his father.
Dut the cares and anxieties he has undergone
in the pursuit of his just claims had done their
woik upon his frame, and there is no doubt
that trouble, grief, and disappointment hastened
his premature death. "He was worn out,"
Herrata 6ays, "by iollowlng up his claims and
defending himself from the calumnies of his
competitors, who, with many stratagems aud
devices, sought to darken the glory of toe
father and the virtue of the son." Diego lutt
two-sons and three daughters. His widow con
tinued the struggle m defense ot the rights ol
her eldest son, Luis, then only six years of age.
She left St. Domingo, where she was on the
death of her husband, and arrived in Spain.
The title of Admiral of the Indies was imme
diately conferred upou him by Charles V, who
augmented his revenue, but set up opposition
to his claim to the Vceroyally of the province
ot Veragua, conferred upon his grandfather,
w hich was thought too vast lor "a subiect to
enforce, and moreover, Involved an intermina
ble ntication.
The claims were at last commuted for the
titles of Duke of Veraaua, Admiral of the
Indies, aud Murcpuis of Jamaica. Don Luis left
no issue, aud was succeeded by his nephew
Dieuo, son of his brother Christopher. Dieso
married his cousin Philippa; but he also died
wiluuui mm-, nuu nitu mm iui IL'guilllluej 1UU1C
line of Columbus became extinct. A long law
suit ensued among the surviving members of
the family, of whom Balthaser Colombo, of the
house ot Cuecaro in Montferrat (Piedinout),
was tne most active an i persevering, and who
maintained that it was he who had the right to
inherit the estates aud dignities acsceuded from
the great Admiral. The cause lasted lor thirty
years, and was finally decided by the Council
ol the Indies in 1008, who iorinallv declared the
male line extinct. Wuno Gelves de Portugallo.
grandson ot Isabella, third daughter of
Diego, son ot Columbus, was put in posses
sion oi tno lines ami estates, and became
Duke of Veragua, Isabella having mar
ried George of Portugal, Count of Gelves :
and thus those titles and estates passed
into a branch of the house of tSraanza esta
blished in Spain. It is from this branch that
the Duke whose death is iuet announced was
descended. His titles were Don Pedro de Portu
gallo. Colon, Duque de Veragua, Marquis de
Jamaica, y Aluiiraute do las Indias. The late
Duke never figured in public life. It was his
pasture grouuds thi.t used to turn out some ot
the best bulla for the Madrid arena. The
archives of the family were carefully preserved
by him, and Washington Irving gratefully ac
knowledges the liberality of the descendant and
representative of the great discoverer in submit
ting them to his inspection, and exhibiting the
treasures they contained when lie was collecting
materials lor his history of the life and voyages
of Christopuer Columbus. Diego, the son ot
Columbus, married a niece of the celebrated
Duke of Alva of the preat Toledo family, and
such an alliance shows the place which the
father attained in Spain in his lifetime.
