CITT INTELLIGENCE. tor Additional City liklligcm ew "i t'c '. I. Ill IIC H LOTTERY AND UAUIIMNU. We commend to our readers the perusal of the following extract from adieconrso delivprel by Rev. J. W. Bchenck, pastor ol the Tenth and Filbert streets church, on Sunday night last, being a continuation of a course on the "Life of Christ," In the delivery of -which some extem pore references were niada to the pernicious mode of promoting the financial interests of Borne of the Christian church"8. As the thoughts of this fearless minister of the Gospel aru based upon the Divine law and our Lord's example, the Christian public will not hesitate to confirm the sentiments presented by a faithful ambas sador of the truth: We will consider our Lord's purilying act of driving out the traders from the temple courts, and its lessons to us. By decrees, in the lapse of lime, th" usacre bad grown up of keeping booths and stalls in the courts of the temple, where everything enjoined for sacrifice was sold. God had enacted that instead of burdening themselves to carry with them the animals, and flour, and oil, and other requisites, they who lived at n dis tance from Jerusalem might take the money and purchase these tlung9, and tln-n oiler tuem. Hence arose the custom ot holding these thlncs for sale at points convenient to worshippers. The business, in itself, therefore, was entirely in accordance with the Divine provision. But human creed Jor gain had taken advantage of this gracious regard to the convenience' and com tort of worshippers. And the traders had presumed to place their marts in the very altar's' presence. Here, too, was the money, brokerage, which served the purpose of ex changing the Roman com, which was the me dium in ordinary transactions, for the Jewish half shekel, w hich was required for the sanc tuary. This was the sight that greeted our Lord's eyes as He came' into those hallowed courts, lie "lound in the temple courts those that sold oxen and sheep ami doves, and the changers of money, sitting." He beard the clatter of con fused voices, as one and another trader urged customers to deal with him. And where the solemn and silent attitude and bearing of prayer was alone appropriate, "Buy my wares!" came uppermost to the ears. His Bpint is stirred by holy indignation. To His work He goes. "When He had made a 6courge of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, aud the sheep, and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables." The doves, lor some reason, he spares. (Was it because the lloly Spirit bad chosen the dove as His symbol when He anointed Ilim?) To those who sold doves he came, and with soitened utterance, perhaps, but not relaxed determination, He says, "Take these things hence! Muke not my Father's house a house ot merchandise!" What must have been the emotions of that band of traders as they hear fiom Him whom they had seen at the Jordan, where came the voice from Heaven, "This Is my beloved Son,'' the peremptory order, "These things hence i" And, in explana tion, the strange desicrnation of the tem ple, "My Father's house!" What a rush of prophecy to memory ! How, in startling form. Btood beiore them that rebuke, now animated with a very resurrection lite, "la this house, whifcta. is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes ? Behold, even I have seen it, saitn the Lord." Well mleht "the disciples," in such a scene, "remember that it was written. The zeal of Thine house hath eaten me up !" How expressive this ot the manner in which that zeal must find vent 1 How demonstrative that that zeal will by no means tpure the earn il abuses that creep into the sanctuary of (Jod, through lock of proper reverence for that sacred place and its Holy Lord ! And what class or age of men is exempt from its application? As He who was "the glory ot the latter house" explains "His sudden com ing" and peremptory "purging" ot those hal lo wea com ts, oy tne command, "inese tnings hence 1 Stake not my Father's house a houss of merchandise," a sound of authority starts on its solemn way, tnat reverberates severe visitation upon all kinds of profanation ot the sanctuary, to the whole succession of genera- tions of men. Now it sends its warnlner to us, and it says, "Profane not that house by bring ing Into its sacred courts your secular atlairs. Use not this place to make or contrive your gains. Plan not here your worldly enterprises. Load not your mind on coming here with your temporal pursuits, your accounts, your schemes of ootaining the things ot this lite." Aud especially regulate not the appoint ments oi that house on secular principles. Make not the management of the house of the Lord a matter id bargain and sale, a question ol protit and loss. Bewate that the aim to secure revenues and make striking impressions on the populace lead uot to fleshly appliances and sensational expedients to draw the crod and to obtain money. Beware that tardea, un godly and tiniH-serving, be uot catered to, aqd be Lot made to determine the manner of eirort . to build up the house of ttie Lord. Beware that a so-called "liberal Christianity" be not made the "Master whom ye follow," and so practices which the pulpit must denounce be admitted luto the sanctuary, and nut into the hands of enemies as a terrible argument to nullify the teachings of truth. And with peculiar applicableness do these notes of warning come to uh. Already do we see the strange picture of the lottery, and the auc tion, and the theatrical performance eveu, largely used for the purpose of raising funds to build, aud repuir, aud support the house of God. Think ot taking a ten-rent pleee, the property of a little boy deceased, aud at the time or ser vice holding it up and calling for bids upon ii, xintil the agnrpizate rises to one hundred and fifty dollars! Think of keeping a "trotting mare" at a church lair, to be "voted" (rallied, not?) for as a means of "prospering" ( 1 ) the church of Jesus Christ 1 Think ot a olay in the very sanctuary, wuh the pulpit stretched out t the dimensions of a staee, in which the promi nent character is a dniulien, swagserincr, swear ing Irishman- the objec t, to raise reven to sustain the ordinance:-, of the bouse ot God 1 Behold the gradation! How it calls up the first Psalm, "Walking in the counsel of too ki godiy;" "oiandme in the way of sinners;" "sit iing in the sessions of the scornf ul." Well dos a secular paper of this city close its comment on the lust ol these proceed mas with "ltepent, ye sinners!" What would He who pureed the temple so summarily do should H j walk into one of these "popular" and "profitable "Kcbimes" for putting the people's monev into the church's treasury? Metniuks the "marc" would make better 'timo than ever; and the "actors" would play strange, pantomime; and the projectors of the'e enterprises woiili, I ween, partake of the tediniis of the Jew trader-. How this city would echo with "these things hence 1" The house of God was built for His worship exclusively. Its ordinanees are chaunels through which we render to Him His propnr service and glory; and through which Ho con ves to us the rich awards of His grace in Jesus Christ. All 6ave this is contraband. And this oons;deration may serve to suggest what ur the proper principles and ways of sustaining the Church. But here that God is the only Lord, and Hii behests, indicated by His Word and Providence, are our only duty; His' laws, plainly written, our only principles of practice. One Word, one work, one wav, cue end l the rule here, as one God is th- Jtatrr. "Holi ness becumeth God's house," and nothing else. This expression of the Divine mind must b re cognized, and that solemn respect be paid to the appointment and service of fie hri-e which that recognition will generate. The eanctuarv'e courts must appear to us ns did Bethel to Jacob, "drecuiful " and for the same, reuson "This i noue other but the bouse ot God!" And it is when this is the case that that other feature of that nicht's experience whi' h Jed Jac ob to perpetuate it will munifent lispll -'Thin is the Kiv'.e of Heaven I" THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH.--PHILADELPHIA, SATUKDAT, LA Ooikrie Carjiival. As the time dravs ne.ir lor the consummation of this, trie n, est sipmfiiant ol eveuts, dedicated in honor ol ll.e licht-footed Mw, expectation is natu ra'lv aroused, Ideas arc at once enlivened, iam y tutus with images ot the past, and desire seems to hasten the moment which shall present to an appreciative public the crowning glories which an Abel and a Ritley, with Napoleonic stra ttey have so fitly devised. Wc do not con sider ourselves prophetic, neither would wo te considered sciolists, when we assert this grand Carnival likely to eclipse all and every attempt heretofore ottered in the character ot a public cnteitainment. We would not particularize, and yet, while referring to a matter so nreenant with Vfc and faydy. wc cannot forbear calling the attention ol our readers to the fact that JJirafehi has charge of the department o important to the saltntorial art. It may be interesting to notice that bis selections have been made with a view to gratify the most lastidious tste, prominent among which may be classed the "new Military Galop," composed expressly for this fete. This superb production, intended to convey to tho perceptions a semblance of the great conflict between the grand armies of Prussia and the Confederate German Slates, will introduce ths novelties of the "needle gun," while tho clash ing of cavalry sabres und the roar of lield pieccs will lend an enchantment only secondary in consideration to an actual campaicrn. Lf.ctcke on Ophthalmic and Aural Scruert. Dr. Von Moschzisker delivered the first ot a scries of lectures oa the history and progress of ophthalmic and aural surgery last Thursday, at the hull of the Philadelphia Uni versity. The lecture was well attended by an intelligent audience of bath sexes. The Pro fessor, alter dwelling upon the importance of the sense of sight, and tho many diseases to which it is subject, gave the history and accounts ol the progress oi the science of ophthal mology. He insisted particularly on the gre.U necessity of specialism in every branch of medi cal science, ouoting the brilliant toast of Pro fessor Dundap, ol the University of Utrecht, olfered at the banquet ot the members of the International Congress ol'Ophlhamology, viz.: "To Medicat specialities to specialism nowa days, the essential condition of true progress of science." At the point where, to-day, human knowlcdce has arrived, no mind, how powerful soever it be, can flatter itsnlf to be encyclo padic; as. In order to understand any science, aud appreciate the common principles which link one to another, a general course of know ledge is necessary up to a certain epoch, like a common starting point; so the progress of every science individually, absolutely requires special ism. Who among us, alter having devoted him self for twenty years to tho study of the eye. could believe to know it entirely ? Who says prepress to-day says specialism 1 We earnestly recommend this course of lec tures to the public, as they will seldom have an opportunity of obtaining so great an amount ol information on these important subjects as the present one from so justly celebrated, an oculist and aurist ns Prolessor von Moschvaisker, who unites, to add to bis attraction as a lecturer, a classic and eloquent style to his vast erudition. Robberies. On Thursday evening Pas chall Morris, dealerio agricultural implements, went to his siore in the Giraid block, Market street, above Eleventh, which had been closed and listened up an hour and a half before, and as soon as he had opened the door he discovered that some of the implements had been piled against it to prevent easy access. Forcing his way in. he then saw a man leaving hurriedly by the back door. Once inside, he found that the tire-proot in the wall hsd been entered by breaking away the brick work at the side of the iron door, and a gold watch stolen from it. There was money in the tire-proot, which the thief had not reached when he was disturbed. In the hurry of the fellow to eet away he left behind a skeleton key and the tools he had used in breaking into the dre-proof.
