be done for her, but she did not make any reply.
Other witnesses were examined, who testified
to frequent quarrels between McCormick and
his wile, but they all denied ever having seen
him strike or kick her. Two of them said
that Mrs. McCormick drank as well as her hus
band, and that she had a bad tongue when she
was in liquor. 1
' Dr. Shapleigh testified that be made a post
mortem examination, and found a wound on
the fore part ot the leg, which had divided a
large vein. Death was produced by bn'tnorr
hage. The wound was made by the leg coming
in contact with a hard substance. A kick
would have done it.
The jury rendered the following verdict:
That Elizabeth McCormick came to her death
by bceraorrhuge caused by rupture of a varicose

Association for the Kelief of Fire
men. The thirty-second annual nieetiut; of the
Philadelphia Association for the Rtliet of Dis
abled Firemen was held last evening, at Mitch
ell's Hall, York avenue. The attendance of
members was large. From the annual report,
submitted to the meeting, it appears that $374522
was annronriated during- lSUli for the relief ot
Bick and disabled firemen, aud the widows aud
orphans of firemen.
The above amount was distributed amouest
114 persons, 13 of whom were widows. $30,01)004
has been expended since the institution of the
Association. $575 were paid for funeral expenses
during the past year. Since the last report 410
annual and 2 life members have been added to
the Association, milking the present number of
liie members 275 nnd annual 1320. The receipts
during tbe year amounted to $700853, and the
expenditures to $604-24.
The report, in conclusion, refers to the driv
ing ol steam lire encines through the streets, as
follows: "The reckless manner in which some
of the steam tire encines are driven through the
streets of our city in times of alarms of fire, is
still a just cause of complaint, and your Board
would take this opportunity to reaffirm their
well-defined position on the subject: and in the
future, as in the past, they believe the best in
terests of the volunteer fire department will be
served by refusing to grant any relief to an en
gineer or driver who may be injured by reasou
of his own careless or immoderate driving."
