very solemn and deeply impressive.
The building is ot brick, constructed In a neat
and substantial manner, and will ceht alotit
Bve hundred persous comfortably. Its con is
not far from 7oi)0. Tue success of this enter
prise W mainly due to the energy and Christian
spirit ot the rector, Kev. Mr. Reed, one of those
active men whose alms and eilorta are con
tinually used lor the advancement of his
Master's cause, ably seconded by the congre
gation, which ranks among the oldest In the city.
Robbed His Employers. A lad named
Day, aged about sixteen years, employed in tue
wholesale notion bouse of ileus, Rogers k Cham
bers, No. 411 Market otruet, wad brought up at
the Central Htation jesterday aiternoon,
beiore Alderman Deitlcr, charged with robbing
bie employers.
Jacob S. Hess deposed that defendant had
been in their employ lor about six weeks; that
tl.ey had missed a quantity of perfumery,
pocket-books, etc.; suspicion fell upon Day,
who was arrested at uoon yesterday by Detec
tive Lamon, as he was walking out of the
store. The oilicer lound seven penknives, a lot
ol neckties, and a pocket-book.
Day acknowledged giving several articles to
a young eirl named Funny Lee, living at No.

The latter testi tied that Day eave her half-a-(Wen

a pocket-book, ploves, breast-pins, etc.

Arkebt of a Fugitive. Henry Allen,
sometimes called Codger, w ho, in company with
another convict, escaped Irom the County frisson
a few months ago by cutting through, the ceiling
ol the cell, and them e through the roof, and
lowering themselves down outside of the walls
by means of u rope made of bed-clothing, har
been recaptured by Jt'ruoQ Keener Grubb, and
returned to his old quarters. The arrest was
made through a lemnrk, overheard by Mr.
Grubb, as to a place wliTe Codger bad been
seen. It was ut a bouse in that, part of the
southern suburbs of the city knows as Smoky
Hollow. The oliieer repaired to the spot desig
nated, and by a nice piece of finesse succeeded,
without exciting the suspicions of the inmetes,
In getting acce.-s to the room in which the fugi
tive was concealed.
Chcrch in a Dangerous Condition.
The new Cohocksmk Presbyterian church build
ing, located on the north side of Columbia
avenue, above 8eveuth street, has to be propped
up to keep from tumbling into a mass of ruins.
The building is high, with a very steep, largo,
and heavy double-pitched slate roof. Tu front
ot the structure is of browu stone. The roof is
well framed. Its steep pitch is more for orna
ment than use. The recent heavy westerly wind
blew the building considerably "out of plumb"
towards the east, livery effort is being made by
means of ''shores" and iron rol3 with swivel
screws to force the buildiug back to its original
roi-itiou.

TnE Mitj.kr Homicide. It Is expected
that Gottleib Williams, who Is charged with the
murder of Mr.. Miller, iu ButtonwooJ street,
near Ninth, will bo tried at the latter part of
the present term or the beginning of the next.
There have been no new developments in the
case since Williams' committal to prison, and
the prosecution will therefore have to depend
"entirely upon circumstantial evidence. Williams
expresses great Impatience at tho delay iu his
trial. It is probable that his caeo will be the
first tiled in the nw court-room.

Loudon Dramatic Critics.
A London correspondent whj appears to be
intimate with the gentlemen he writes about,
gives Ihe following insight into the f'trsonnd ot
the London dramatic critics:
1 do not know what wcgbt (if any) is' at
tached on your side to dramatic criticism in our
papers; but perhaps you may be willing to learn
who are our dramatic critics, which cau hardly
be called a secret here. There is Mr. John
Oxentord, who writes for the rimes a man of
learning, and a good judge of dramatic wares,
who also writes the dramatic criticism", as well
as tho--e famous articles on tauhty Frencti
plaj)S and buoks w hich occasionally appear in
the fHiturtfay liicivw. Ilo may always be seen
on first-nights in a solitary box, shunning all
tociety. nut particularly that ol ladi"s, wno.se
sniall talk he holds in abhorrence. He is fa
mous among the box-attendants tor relusing all
refreshments during the progress of the piece,
however late it may detaiu hi in; but he will not
write an article uutil he has been home, and,
as we say, "slept upon it."
Then we have John Uollineshead and Moy
Thomas, who represent the Daily .ews. The
former, who also writes ior the I union H"C.ew,
and occasionally lor Punch, is, perhaps, the
plainest and most outspoken of the theatrical
critics. Manaucrs hate him accordingly; and
his recent evidence before the Parliamentary
committee in lavor of "free trade in tue drama"
has served to widen the breach. Moy Thomas
would, perhaps, be a good cntic if he had any
sympathy with the stage, and was not fond of
theoiizing and philosophizing. He is more at
home, I suspect, iu wriiing about the hnances
ot Europe and America, and feels in the theatre
like a Dsh out of water.
The Daily Afu, by-tlie-way, prides itself in
alwajs having its criticisms out the next morn
ing, however late tne perlormance. The Tele
yraph studs Mr. E. L. lilanchard, who writes
farces and pautoniimcs; the Morning Star, Mr.
Leicester f5uckii gham. This gentleman is a
great adapter from the French, criticizes his
own plavs, and always proves to his own satis
faction "that the adaptation is better than the
original. This gentleman Is, perhaps, the in on
ecctatic of all our crit.es, and is, as may be sup
posed, cn good teims with the managers.
Every actre.-s is in bis eyes flivine tier "facial
express' in," tor "emotional power," etc., all
that cau be desired; consequently, if any brother
critic lags behind in rapt urea of this kind, L. D.
always lakes up the cudgels, and calls his criti
cal brother (for these little amenities of litera
ture are, unlortunately, not conhued to America)
"a cowaroly assailant," or "adastardly atracker
of a lad's reputation." The Pall MaU. Gazelle
critic is Mr. G. H. Lewes, who is thoroughly in
dependent, thouali crochety, and sometimes
Mr. Sutherland Edwards, late Times correspon
dent in Poland, and author of novels ani boois
about music and the Russian people.
The Lxaminer cntic is its editor. Henry Mor-
ley, proles?or of literature in King's College,
London, and author of many well-known worts.
He has lately reprinted a volume of his dramatic
noiicep. He is one of the most independent of
his class knows little, however, about the
i-tage, though much about dramatic literature,
J'up.lish and loreign.
The Athena vm critic is John Ileraud, a writer
of ponderous epics, unactable plays, and train
cendeulal books about Shake.-peare, and other
subieets. His criticisms have no weight, and
he is sometimes replaced by Dr. Doran, who
has tho advantage ot not being a play-wnter or
adapter, but who is so fond of telling you all
ahout the history of the theatre, and the play, and
what old players played in it (if it is an old
one), that he always bud a himelf compelled to
omit to criticize the matter in hand for want ol
Bpace. Mr. T. G. Tomlins. a man also learned
in theatrical lore, and one of the most active of
those who procured the abolition of our patent
theatres some thirty years since, represents
the Morning Advertiser, atd occasionally tho
Header.
Mr. T. W. Robertson, successful author of the
comedies of Ours, society, and David Garriek
writes lor the Illustrated Times; Mr. Charles
Dumphy for the Morning Post; and Mr. Des
mond Ryan, a wonderful critic, who once elabo
rately criticized a performance of M'me Bosio's
three days before it took place, for which sur
prising feat, however, an uuapprecuUlng editor
suspended him for awhile from his duties. Such
is the ltfct ol our dramatic writeis. They de
serve to be known, tor if there be any truth in
the opinions ol the late Mr. Leigh Hunt on tiie
possible power of conscientious dramatic criti
cism, they are in no small degree responsible
for the degraded conditiou of the British drama.
Fea.Gulls. An Enulisb pnper says: "A raosl
curious night is witnessetl wben a large steamer
arrives in Southampton Water. The momont
she conies to her niooriniis a Hock ot nbom t io
hnndi'cd sea-pulls hover about her, to pick up
the scraps ol bread, meat, and oiral that are
thrown overboard. These birds loriu a colony
that live ou the outward and hoineward-boiiiid
steamers daily lying In Mouthanipton Water."
