There were In the hands of the commission houses,
forwarders, and millers, on Saturday, 95.600 bairels ol
Hour: 158 60 bushels of wheat; 2538 barrels corn meal ;
and 1776 barrels rye flour. The average monthly price
ot flour during the year was as follows: Januarv 7'25;
February, SO W; March. 6 75: April, S7-25; Mav. H;
June. 8 Mr July, 7; August. C826; September, 8 t0;
October, l November, t8 60; December, $8 75.
BTJILDINO IMPROVEMEUrs OF THE YEAR.
From the 1st of January to the close ot December,
1866, there were taken out ol the office of tbe Buildiug
Inspectors permits as follows :
in January. 41 lor new buildings and 85 for altera
tions and repairs; number ot dwellings 30, fauto
torles 2.
In February. 62 for new buildings 60 for altera
tions and additions, lor dwellings 27, tor lactones 4.
During March 2H7 were taken out lor new buildings,
119 lot alteiations and additions tota'. 886. For dwell
ings 201, tor factories 7. 1 lor a foundry, 16 lor stores,
and 1 for school bouse.
ln April theie were Issued 151 permits for new build
ings, 189 ot wbich were tor dwelings; and In addition
there were 128 pern its for alterations, 2 for school
bouses, 7 lor stores, 2 lor lactone a, 1 tor a sugar home,
and 1 tor a church.
Dunng May there were Issued 184 permits. for new
hotl dings, of which 96 were for dwe Hugs. There were
besides 112 permits for alterations and addition!) 3 for
churches, (for taotorles, 1 for a toundry, 1 for a school
house, and 1 for a printing office (the Lrdger building,
Sixth and Chesnuf streets.)
ln June there were 109 permits Is ted for new build
ings, 109 being for dwll!ng, and 123 for a teratlons and
audition, blor lactones, 1 lor a foundry, 1 for a dome,
and 1 lor a school-house.
July was a heavy moi tk for building operations. The
Jermlts were 337 for new houses, 264 of which were
welllngs.139 tor alterations and additions, 8 tor fac
tories 11 lor stores 1 lor churches.

837; 101 alterations and additions, llo There weie 4 lor
Churches 6 lot lac ortes, 2 for loundries.
There were In Heptember a total ot 199 permits ; 291
tor new buildings 106 tor alterations and additions; the
dwellings have been 112; school bouses. 2 chutches, 1;
loundries 1; s'ore houses. 1.
ln October the permits numbered 416; 305 for new
structures, and 109 lor alterations and additions; the
dwellings nuinbertd 2U; factories, V; 1 tor a mil;
ecboolrMuses, 4. ....
There was In Snvember a total or til permits, 228
being for new buildings 84 for alterations and repnirs,
2 for school booses, 6 tor stoie houses, 1 for a church.
The permits lu December numbered, for new buildings,
46: lor alterations and additions. 36. Theie were be
sides. 12 for other structures, such as boiler bsuses,
abons offices, breweries e'.c
The permits Imued i new buildings figure np to a
total of I728, and those for alterations and repairs to
1151, but It Is to be remembered that as one permit Is

Buslncse was almost entirely suspended to-day,
tiie Stocic Exchange, Cora Exchange, banks, and
moBt of the stores being closed, as uaual, on the
1st of January.
Tbe following is from the New York Iribune
Of this morning:
"Money is 7 per cent, on call, and borrowers
very ready to pay it. In commercial paper the
transactions are email at 7 ior tx-st names and 8
for fair. In many quarters the opinion la ex
nreseed that tbe commencement of the new vear
is to be the signal lor renewed ease in money and
a general realoralion of business. As the causes
H'hich have united to produce the existing stasr
natlon ln trade and demand for money tit tull
legal rates, upon the best collaterals, still exist
in lull force, this hope will hardly be realized.
War taxes continue to eat up the bubst tnea of
tbe people, and at the same time there Is going
on contraction of leal-teuder money a con
traction only to be stopped by decreasing taxa
