falling In ol the walls, and the killing of one
man and eerious injury of several other work

The brewery was a lurqe ("tone edifice, aud
icas being built, ai was supposed, in a most sub
stantial manner. It Is nutated near the Lan

Hospital, and within a short distance of the
location of the new West Philadelphia Water
Work. Yesterday afternoon the western end,
which w as being built lor a distillery, tell in,
and five workmen who were employed on t bo
mafovry weie burled in the ruins. After some

in height, and the other two stories, and a part

Another Fx.sia.tx Meeting. A iargo
mass meeting ot the Iricnds of Ireland was held
last evening, in the American Mechanics' Hall,
corner of Fourth and George streets. The hall
was densely crowded, and quite a number of
ladies were In attendance. Senator Morrison,
of Missouri, addressed the meeting, lie spoke
eloquently of the handlul of men who crossed
the border and attacked the Knliau. He said
that tne red-coats had not recovered from the
shock, und the movements of the Fenians at
lhat tiaie established the tact bejond a douht,
that, with a larger lorce, they could have taken
possession of the entire Cansdas.
He referred to Ireland's grievances, advocated
her right?, and said that another demonstra
tion would shortly bo made which, wjuli give
to the old country her independence. Mr.
Morrison, during his remarks, was frequently
applauded. A delegation ot Feninns from the
lower part of the city, headed by a baud of
music, appeared in the hall, aud was received
with great applause.
George Archdeacon, Esq., Head Centre of
Liverpool, and a lato prisoner in Moun'joy
Prison, also addressed the meeting. His
remarks were 0 attentively listened to, and re
ceived with outbursts of applause. The meet
ing adjourned nt a lare hour.
A Worthy Institution, A number of
ladies of this city united to establish a Home,
where young girls eneaced in store-', and unable
to pay lull board, eould obtain board at a small
cost, and where young women arriving in the
city could stay while seeking employment. This
beueVolent ladies who slatted the enterprise
have purchased two fine three-story brick dwell
ings, IS os. 1433 and 1435 Lombard street, which
they have furnished comfortably, and in which
a- lurgo number of respectable young women
have already found a home. The Institution,
however, though productive of great beuetit, is
not Belf-supportinsr, as the receipts do not by
any means meet the expeuses. The lady mana
gers appeal, therefore, lor contributions of
money, provisions, books forttie library, and
anything that may be usoful. Our citizens will
need no urgiuet to respond to tais call in behalf
of a noble institution.

The Republican members of Select aud Common
Councils met in caucus yesterday afternoon,
and nominated James Lynd, Esq., for City Soli
citor, to till tue place made vacant by the resig
nation of F. C. Iirewstcr, Esq. The candidates
were James Lynd, Moses A. Dropsie, and Henry
T. King, Esqs. There were five ballots, on the
lourth of which Messrs. Lnd and Drop9ie had a
tie vote. On the laf-t ballot the vote was Lyud,
28; Dropsie, 20. Mr. King had twelve votes on
one of the ballots. The nomination havinzbeen
made, Mr. Lvnd was invited into Common Coun
cil Chamber, and thanked the members for the
compliment they had paid him, which bo said
was more gratifying because it was an indorse
ment of his course during tho seven years he
had "been connected with tlie Select Council.
Proposed Reduction in the Esti
mate?. The Commissioner of City Property, in
his estimate for 1807, put down the sum ol
$20,00.1 for tho further improvement ot Fair
mount Park; but the Finance Oommitteo after
considerine the matter, have agreed to ask for
only $6000 for tho said purpose. It was argued
that Councils bhould cut down everv appro
priation to the lowest figure compatible with
the city's Interest, so that tho tax rato could be
reduced to somelhing like the old figure imme
diately at ler consolidation. The appropriation
bills will be taken up, it is expected, to-day,
and we understand that an effort will be mu It?
to reduce many of the iteim which have been
approved of by many of the committees.
Local Missionary Wobk. Bethany

and is one of our best home missions. '

The meeting then aJjo timed.
EVEN IN O SESSION.
In the evening devotional services were held.
Af'erthe singing of a hymn and a prayer,
Rev. Dr. Cookman, of Philadelphia, was intro
duced, and spoke substantially as follows:
The Bible, in whoso circulation we are spe
cially concerned, is an Inexhaustible theme of
discouise. 1 propose this evening to occupy
only a few moments in discussing the relatiou
the Biblo has to our lreo institutions. The
Scriptures are a heaven-appointed key to unlock
tbe mysteries of Heaven. They have been
translated into our own language, and have
been scattered broadcast throughout the length,
and breadth of the laud. Tho Bible is indis
pensable to the perpetuity and perfection of our
free institution". There are some who will
strenuously controvert this position; some who
lavor and pertinaciously maintain other and
different theories. We have one class who insist
that our Government possesses in itself the
guarantee of its own perpetuitv. It is, indeed,
the very perfection ot violl.icitl machinery,
which, if lett alone, would proceed in its own
workings; but let us ask such persons, Where is
our Government, aud wrret is o&r Government?
VrMt, if you please, our national capital, and
inquire of the President of the United States if
he is tho Government, and he will tell you, or,
at least, be ought to, that he is not. Enter the
halls of our Senate and House of Representa
tives, and ask the Congressmen at present as
semb ed if they are the Government, and
they will reply, no! Approach the heads of
depaitments, the judges of our Supreme
and subordinate courts, the generals of our
army, the commodores of our navv, aud
demand ot them if they are the Govern
ment, and they will reply to you negatively.
They will say to jou that they are but the exe
cutive ollicers at the head of their departments.
No more satisfactory answer can be given as to
what is the Government, than that it is with the
people. Every citizen, however humble his
orieiu or lowly his lot in life, shares, or ought
to share, in the sovereignty of this great repub
lic. If our millions should rise in their majesty
and might to-morrow, as they rose so gloiiously
in tne spring oi it?oi, lusisting upon tne main
tenance ot our national Union, demanding a
monarchy, a monarchy must be the unavoidable
consequence. We must rely upon our free in
stitutiens for the perpetuity of our cherished
liberties. The verv germ of civil liberty
namely, that all men aro born free and equal,
and aro possessed of certain unalienable
rights is a blossom from the tree of lite, aud;is
tho first shoot from the noble oak which,
despite the desolating times of war, is striking
its roots deeppr and gieadiug its branches
more widely than at aDy previous period. The
speaker continued at somo length, and through
out was listened to with marked attention.
Rev. Dr. Fewsmith was then iutroduced and
made a few remarks, after which the audience
departed, no doubt well satisfied with the ad
dresses of the learned gentlemen.
The Camden Skating Park is being
fitted up for the winter season. The water has
been let into tbe Inclosure, and all that is needed
now is a cold snap to perfect the arrangement.
Colonel McKeen has charae of it, and is labor
ing assiduously to secure the patronage of our
skating citizens. The proceeds are lor the bene
fit ot the Second Presbyterian Church, lately
lu'tlt, and the funds raised aie to pay off the
debt incurred in buildinor it,
