The Mukdek of Captain James Wiley. Alfred Teulel, who was arrested in this city on the charge of murdering Captain James Wiley, of Doylcstowii, has been fully committed to answer the murder, upon the testimony of a lad, named Uarmau Hick, employed on the boat of Captain Wiley. The testimony is circum stantial as to the occurrence, but there was an admission to the boy by the prisoner that he killed the Captain. Teulel is ot German parent age, but he was bora in Pennsylvania. It was said that during the war he was tried bv a court martial tor desertion from tho army, and sen tenced to be shot. How ho escaped is not known. After Teufel's commitment he was lobbied and manacled in hid cell, and tour times within a lew days succeeded in removing the manacles, and twice relieved himself of the hobbles. The following is a description of him: lie is in his twenty-second year, but looks older, doubtless owin to his exposed and reckless manner ot life; is lar from being ill-favored in features; a stout-built and remarkably stalwart form, quick, restless, and active in all his movements; a bright, keen, blaek eye, and rather dark complexion, with a countenance by no means repulsive or malignant. Genteel in drets, if it did not verge upon the fast and flash in style, and a manner indicative of row dyism. He manifests by neither tremor of voice, downcast look, nor change of his color, that he cither appreciates or cares tor the serious charge now pending against him. Convention of Firemen.- A meeting of , the Firemen's Convention, tho object of which is to take action in reference to the bill beioro Councils, to create a Board of Fire Commis sioners, was held hist evening at the Hniuane Hose house, William D. Kendnck, of the Colum bia Engine Company, in tho chair. There wete forty-eight companies represented. Mr. Showaker, Chairman of the Committee on Resolutions, reported that the remonstrance of the Convention had been laid before Coun cils. The Committee had found among the members of Councils considerable opposition to the proposed ordinance, and the Chairman expressed the opinion that it would Anally be referred to the Committee on Fire and Trusts, where it would rest. A discussion followed upon a proposition 1 1 appoint a committee to prepare an ordinance, as a substitute for too one before Councils, that would be without its objectionable features. It was opposed because of a want of time to prepare such an ordinance; also, for the reason that firemen do not desire a change; and any action ot the Convention in that direction would look like a submission to Councils. The proposition was so altered as to embody a request to Councils to provide for a conference between the Committee on Fire and Trusts and the Committee on Resolutions ot the Conven tion, with a view to the preparation of an ordi nance that will keep the controlling power in the hands of the firemen. JTho Convention then adjourned. Meeting of the Horticultural Society. The public in general, since the Hor ticultural Society is about to give it a magnid cent hall, second to none In the United States in point of beauty and coramodiousness, is awakening to a conception of the fact that the institution is an important one. Last evening, at the regular meeting of the Society, an essay was read by Edwin Batterthwaite, of Jenkin town, upon the subect of "Garden Farming." The speaker seemed to think that the day was not distant when lands in the vicinity of our cities, advancing rapidly In value, wonid be cul tivated as carefully as corresponding lands in Europe. Many of the essays read before this Society possess great value, and may yet bo col lected into a volume or volumes. It was stated last night that the new Horticul tural II all is advancing handsomely towards cbmpletion. The ratters of the roof are now being put up. Persons ported in the matter pronounce the work an extremely fine specimen of rool trupslng. Tho building is 75 by 100 feet in area. Its cost will be $125,000, of which $25,000 of stock remains to be taken. The front is of pearl colored Delaware county stone, with embellishments of Connecticut brown stone. If tbe nail were finished, it could be let for every night in the season. It will seat 2500 people, and will probably be first occupied by the Phila delphia Pharmaceutical Society's anniversary. The United (-States Revenue Department Boom to conflder strum revenue cutters as too expen sive. The six cutters built by them are very bcimtllul vessels, tho njct of them all being the Mahoning, constructed in this city, by Mr. John W. Lynn. Tho Treasury Department has ordered Irom Mr. Lynn two new sailing cutters, the frames of which are just assuming shape. They were directed to be furnished in one hun dred days. The Department has Imbibed the idea that, while steam cutters make a very beau til ul vessel, those propelled by sails will answer every purpose, especially in time of peace. The HtKimtm uhh woiiki so siiccc-siuiiy, nas proved so fleet and so economical, that general attention has been directed to her. French and English and Russian officers have examined her, and not a few distinguished foreign repre sentatives havo visited tho yard of her builders to make Inquiry relative to her proportions and her model. But tbe Department seem to object to the expense ot 1he machinery and coal, as a general rule, and those two new cutters are to be built upon the clipper pattern, and to be driven by sails. The specifications are furnished by the Department. To the builder, In this case, no discretion Is allowed. BToubk Robbery.
