Ax Aggravated Assault upon a
Woman. At a very ea.'ly hour this moining.a lady,
llv ng noar Eighth and Girard avenue, bad occasion
to leave ber bouce on an errand of neoessity, and
when she had got a tow doors lrora ber bouse was
attacked by a couple of ruUians, who attempted an
outrage upon her. She struggled witn them,
and her cries attracted the attention of the po ice,
wbo came to ber assistance, and frightened her
assailants off. They wore, pursued, and alter a
chase, were run into a saloon at Seventh and Girard
avenue, and were there captured. The two men
gave the names ot John Stief and James Dean.

Sheets was going along Ash street, in the Nineteenth
Ward, he was suddenly set npon by lour men, who
assaulted him in a violent manner. He cried out

providertially to be within hearing, ran to his assist
ance, and arrested two of the would-be robbers,
named Thomas Vermillion and Benjamin Flick.

Fire, and Rescue of a Child. Yes
terday morning about nine o'clook smoke was seen
issuing from the second-story windows of No. 712
St. ilaiy street. Otlicer Slirgard, who was In the
neighborhood, on seeing 11, rushed up with a bucket
of water, and rescued a small child that was almost
suffocated. The bad and bedding and most of the

BMan Drowned. This morning, about 10
o dock, a boatman named Daniel A bert, about
thirty live years of are, residing In Reading, fell
into the Schuylkill river at the Wire Bridge, Fair
mount, and was drowned. After much patient
grappling the body was reoovered bv Ollioers l'nt
nerand Havlland, of the Sixteenth District.
Slight Fibe. A silent fire broke out in
the Good Intent Cotton Mills, on the West Chester
road, In the Twenty fourth Ward, about 7 o'clock
this morning. The damage amounted to about $100.

giving any alarm.
