I THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. FIIIL ADELFHIA, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 18G6. TIIW CI1ANCKS VOl YOU Bill MKK. "ram (he found Table. One of the most niuikcJ characteristic of our country and time l? the wonderful opportunity ' for younaf men to moke for tlicm-irlvcs position nd intlueuoc It surely is not so of any other nation, nor has it ever been so prominent at any Other period of our history. Young men have Reucrally been at a disadvantage because of their yourn. Put among other changes that hare been severing the present from the past, It has become popular to advance young men to stations oi great Influence and responsibility. Thp largest churches hcoIc ministers under thirty, and the old-line physicians and lawyers arc punned aside lor young and brilliant laleiit of the modern schools. Young men are managing many ot the ablest journals in the land; young men take the highest position as merchants, bankers, and manu facturers, and theie Is leally no position at the present day to which a young man may not aspire and obtain. The change is, indeed, won derful, and one which young men de not t-pptn fully to appreciate. As matters are at tho prc eut tine, if tuey cannot achieve poiui'thing worthy oi themselves, it is quite likely that they never will. Kor there never have bt-eu in any uge or in any laud sucli truly magnificent cnanres ior the triumphs of young men as our country reveals to-day. Wl.eu we speak of young rti"n, we mean tho-e who aro between tweuty and thirty-live Tneso are the years which, iu the olden time were looked upon a- comparatively unlriiuttil and valueli'.-s. If a man under tiilrly carved his name high up anion:; the illii-trioun, he was considered a veritable genimand hero. Now It Is no vcty uncommon thing lor men of this age to retire irom buincss with sullictcnt means for fuppon through hie. There arc ministers and laweis, too, almost without number, who are fairly and fully established before thirty. And, what la best of all, tlieyare not looked upon with envious or jealous eyes by those who are cider. In fact, there Is a most wholesome re spect for young men as well as lor old, wherever and whenever real merit makes Itselt apparent. The idea seems to be that a man, young or old, is to be judged by what he actually accom plishes. This, of course, presents a wide and glorious field for all who are willing to enter the fists. It is surely a greater honor to acquire positions of influence at thirty thun It is at forty, or later iu lite. We know that a great deal is said about young men wearing themselves out in this way prematurely. Iu part it is coirect, lor yoi.ng nieu do in multitudinous coses make themselves utterly worthless by the time they are thirty. But they do not often wreck them selves with too much work. It is dissipation that bhsrhts and kills. Wholesome work is good for all, and it would be well if every young man iu the land bad enough of it to do to take bis thoughts once and lotever from indolence aud debauchery. But even if hard work did tend to break a man down early, with the opportunities as they now are almost any man of spirit would prefer to accept the hazard aud try for the iaureld. It young men would know how and iu what way the opportunity is preseuted lor Iheir ad vancement, we will tell them. Iu the first place, there Is a field lor orators a field almost deserted. The great speakers have passed away, and a new supply is called tor. Young or old, of whatever origin, educntlon, or position, a truly eloquent speaker could win tor himself a golden crown. In the second place, the still undeveloped profession' of journalism calls for voung men of character and power. A hundred men of ability could take leading positions at once in this too neglected field of influence. All the profes sions, too, are dividing up iuto specialties, Affording unparalleled opportunities for tal ented men to make their lives useful and hono rable. The vast mining regious of the West call tor engineers, but there are very few to respond to the demand. A great many public institutions arc springing up over the land, requiting the best of executive talent to ad minister their affairs. The literature of the country is waning because of the lack of bright aud liesh wiiters. In fact, there is no end to the chances open to young men of character siud determination. The great want of tho dixy is tor men to till important positions. It ts sometimes said that there are moie applicants for positiou than can possibly be employed. We do no believe this to be correct: but it it ts, a brave man will make a position lor himself. There are so many new fields to be opened in every department of thought aud enterprise, that somewhere a youug man con, aud if per sistent will, make for himself a worthy place. The greatest obstacle In the way of the ad vancement of young men is cowardice. They are afraid lest they may be called "dashiue," or lest tbey may walk in the light ot tome old prejudice or word wisdom. Some men, too. are o extremely cautious that they are discouraged by the waruings of those who nave been unfor tunate, and they never dare to attempt any thing. This is "not the spirit for to-day. All the interests of the times call for boldness and cotiruee. There are more undeveloped suc cesses aud more unwritten hcroiaius thun have ever been recorded. There are enough greut and aood things to be accomplished to carve the name of every young man in the land bleb up among the lists. These things appear to be forgotten. An idea seoms to pre vail tbut nearly every great opportunity has been seized, and that those who come after have only to follow tamely on in old ruts and paths. This is a great mistake, and one which works very disastrously to those who indulge in it. There are new ideas innumerable to be deve loped, aud it is the duty ot young men to do all in their power to discover them. There are great and grand fields, greater and grander thau the world has ever seerii and here are the places ior vouufr men to lest their strength. Not that every man must be a hero in the eyes ot the world, but it is incumbent upon all fo seek to advance fhe piogrcssive spirit of the age and of tne country. But holilness is not the only requisite of the times. Honesty and character are cert duly in greater demand than mere brilliaucy. The ten dcncies of the ase seem to be to make men les1 regardful of the means used to achieve success. A trulv eood man. one who has lofty aspirations and one who loves tho right tor the right's sake, is the man who is surest to make a real success, There are too nianv men who cannot be trusted There are too lew men of whom all the world knows that they are planted upon rielit as upon adamant. It a man is bold, sincere, liberal, and Dersisteut, our country is ludeed a magniticent arena for a struggle. Only let the ideas reach iarther and higher than those which have pre ceded, aud the victory is certain. 1( young men knew one-half their power, they would accom plish far greater and grander things. An Interesting Scrap of Confederate History. Admiral Semmes, in reviewing in his paper, the Mobile Gazette, Mr. E. A. Pollurd's history of the war publishes the following order under which the Coufederate fleet in James river was blown up on the nipht ol the evacuation. It has never before been published: COKPKDEBATB STATES OF AMERICA, ExECUTIYI Orrics, Riohmond, Va., April 2, 1805. Rear Admiral Raphael Heroines, Commandiusr James River Squadron Sir: General Lee advises the GoTTument to withdraw from this city, and the otlirerii will leave this evening accordingly. 1 presune that General Lee haa advised you of this, and of his movements, and made sugges tions aa to the disposition to be made of your pquadron. He withdraws upon hit lines, towards Danville, this night, and unless other wise directed by General Lee, upon you is devolved the dutv of destrovtng your ships this niebt. and, with all the forces under your com mand, ioinlns General Lee. Confer with hlra. if ni-Hfitlcable. before destroying them. Let noonle be rationed, as far as possible, for tbe ruaroh, and armed and equipped for duty in Very respectful!?, your obedient servant, 8.
