Crosby Opera House Art Association.
To the Mditor of the Xeie York Herald r Having
aeen In th ileraid a letter impugning my motive
and tbose of tbo managers ol the Crosby Opora
Mouse Ait Association in not at onco closmir thoir
books, might J requust you to allow me the liberty
of making a brief reply to it r
Tbe time since the subscription lists were first

rp to the present more than one half of the whole
Dumber ol certificates have been disposed ol But
will yonr correspondent permit me to ask him
whether himselr. bis friends, or tho public generally
would be contented with my action were 1 to brioir,
tbe Crosby Art Association to an immediate close,
retaining the unso d shares in my own band' At.
Its flmt commtnormcnt 1 determined to hold no
certificates m my own possession at tbe closing ol
the books.
My reason for this was that I wished to avoid
every porubilitv of anything like doubt in tbe minds
of tbe subscribers as to tbe honesty and Justice of
the fiua) result. For the same reason the commit
tee selected by the management, who have kindly
consented to superintend the drawing, and who
are composed of the wealthiest and most influen
tial mercantile residents in Chicago, concurred with
mo. hut ironi previous Inexperience In the compli
cated details of so largo a scheme, 1 am free to con
fess that myseli and the management were unable to
determine tho time required lor carrying it to a ter
mination with any uegreo ot certainty. Conse
quently! cannot but think that when the public
has repeatedly allowed nine or ten rnoutlii for trie
completion ol the fhare lists of infinitely smaller art
associations, we scarcely presume too much upon
their kindness when we require somewhat mure
time than that which has elapsed since July last.
Let me, however, assure your correspondent and
the others for whom he speaks, that the dav for the
drawing will be fixed witnin a lew days after tho
returns irom tbe various agents in different pans of
tbe country tor October have been received, and I
may honestly affirm that it is my wish, even more
than his, that the day shall be determined as imru'j
liatoiy as possible. U. U.C'KOsnr.
