week the Academy received a communication
from 11. MeWenp, )u which he described a very
useful application of M. roncattlt's discovery.
He states that about the beirinninir of Inst July

At the last meeting of the French Academy of '
Hciences, an announcement of the niecovery of I
a new telescopic, planet was received (roin M.
Lntber. H has been named Ar.tiope, and is the
ninetieth of the teries. The positions observed

declin., A"l min. The same planet has also been
olwei ved at Berlin.
ktixlar i.icnr.
The Academy hai also received a leiir from
Father Seccni, oi Koine, on the spectrum analysis
ol stellar light, iu examining a larg number
I stai-, he says he was a truck with the uni
iormity of tbt rr luminous constitution, lie dis
tinguishes three ditlereut tvpes: one commonly
called the typeot wtiite slurs, like Sirtm, ctci;
another comprises the stais whose light produce j
red or orange-colored bands in the suecirum;
and to the third belonir the stars producing very
narrow bands. In the tir-t type he has t'ounl au
exception: Camilla Cae-iopa-e, whicn, instead of
having a dark band at F a point ol tne spectrum
well known to those who possess a map of it
ha.- a luminous one in-tead. Oi the slars pertain
i ng to the second type, Alpha Hereulis is the
most remarkable, it i" of the third magnitude,
und jieldaa spectrum, the hands of which
appear in rebel like the pillars of a loug colon
nade. The stars oi the thud tvpi; might be
appropriately call.d solar, their spectrum bear
ing the strongest ret'euiblance tu that of the
sun. Another remarkable circumstance it this,
that each of these types appears to be dominant
in somo ope or other of tne celestial rczious.
O ir readers may remember our givini unnc
tO'int of M. Oritiiitnd de 'a;i's papers, in which
he maintains -tlmr -holujv is 'coatwtrionw,- and
a'ht to pe prt'vent-'d by means of strict quar
antine. We a!n cave abstracts of the replies
wh eh h's papers elicited, and in which every
one of hi-i arguments was ili inol'.hed ; besides
which, we suppose our venders are themselves
personally aware, a t we are, of tacts in direct
opposition to M. (.'rimuml's views. Neverthe
less, ho has thought proper to address auother
paper to the Avaiiemy. in which, alter attempt
ing to cover Irs retreat by means of a quibble
of dates, he expresses himself as follows: "If,
in retard to cholera, science has advanced a
step thro lirh the now unimpeachable demon
at ration ot the tran-missioility of that terrible
muladv, it is Otvimjr to me." This, iu tiio sum
mer, would be rcU'Cbhingly cool.
STATISTICS OK l'HOTOGRAnty.
Tlie rapid growth of new and special indus
tries, says the British (Marterly lit oiew, is a fact
so characteristic of the prt sent day, that the
statistics of photography, can scarcely be re
garded as wonderful, viewed merely as n ques
tion of economics. Nevertheless, some ot the
facts are suuicien'ly stwtlina;. Twenty years
fico one person claimed the sole riant to "prac
tise photography professionally in Kngland.
According to tue census ot ista, tne uuinher ol
persons who cnterrd their names as pho
tographers wa '2'y.u. There is reason. '
however, to believe that these figures fall !
short of the real number; since then it is i
probable the number has been doubled i
or trebled, and thai, including tho.-e
collaterally associated with the art, it i- even (
four or live tunes that number. But these i
figures fall short of the number intcreted iu '
phototraphy as amateurs. We ave intorined
that eight years ago, in establishing a periodical
which' has Binee become the leading photo
graphic journal, a lare publishing firm sent
out twenty-live thousand circulars not sown
broadcast, but specially addressed to persons
known to be interested in the new art science.
The number' of professional photographers iu
the United States is smd to be over fifteen thou
sand, and a proportionate number may with pro
priety be estimated as nread over continental
Europe and other parts ot the civilized globe.
But a more curious estimate of the ramitica
tions ofthis industry may be formed by a alance
at the consumption of some of the materials em
ployed. A slnglo firm In London consumes, on
an average, the whiles of two thousand eags
daily in the manufacture of ulbumenized paper
for photographic printiuu, amounting to six
hundred thousand nimuitllv. As it may be
fairly assumed that tlr.s is but a tenth oi the
total amount consumed In this eo;intrv, we ob
tain an average of ,-i millions of Inchoate fowls
sacrificed annually in this new worship of the
sun in the United Kingdom alone. When to
this is added the far larger consumption of
Kurope and America, whicii we do not attempt
to put in lk'urcs, the imucinmiou is startled iy
the enoTinous '.otal inevitably presented for its
realization. '
In the absence of exact data we hesitate to
estimate the consumption of the precious
metals, the mountains of silver and monuments
of cold, which lollow as matters of nec-ssitj.
A calculation based on tacts enables us to state,
however, that tor every twenty thousand eggs
employed! ucarlv one hundiedweight of nitrate
of Oliver Is consumed. We arrivenbus at an
estimate 'Of three hundredweight of uitrate of
suver uiiiiiiaiiy uceu in tins country alone in me
pj od notion ot photographs. To descend to indi
vidual facts more easily gripped, we leant that
the consumption of materials in the photo
graphs ol the international Kxhlbitiou of 18G2.
produced by Mr. Kngland for the London Stere
oscopic Company, amounted to twenty-four
ounces of nitrate ot silver, nearly nfiy-four
ounces of terchloride of gold, two hundred gal
loos of albumen, amounting to the whites of
thirty-two thousand eggs and seventy reams of
paper; the issue of pictures approaching tu
nearly a million, the number of stereoscopic
prints amounting to nearly eight hundred thou
sand copies-
