A Fihht Latin Readino Book. By William Sm.ch, L.L.D., and Ifnry Drosler, LL.D. liarper A Bros. Philadelphia Agents: J. B. lappincott A Co. This second of the series bcin? Issued by Harper, as guides to students of Latin, com prises an epitome of Cwsar's Gailicjwars, and a Compendium of Hhomond's "Lives of Distin guished Romans." Tbe text is carefully re vised, and as scrupulous and exact as passible. Copious uotcs explain tbe construction, and a dictionary of nklamiliar words makes study ' easy. The book inain'ftlns the high character acoured by the iirst of the series of 'Triad pin l.atiua." T iK National Cook Book. By a Lady of Phllii .lolphla. T. B. Peterson & Brother. The publication of reliable and really valu able recipes and cook books, has been made a specialty by Messrs. Pctcr.-on. The one before us is the best that has fallen under our notice. True, we do not know much about tbe culinary department, and have to tuko the proportions of cgiH, sugar, and cream given us, tor gospel truth. But the writer evidently knows what she is talking about. She treats of the cheapest methods oi prcpar.n,? soups, Ash, oyster3, every thing, in fact, from pickled clams to call's foot jelly, and from catsup 10 pie. She is a universal geuiua in her line, and her book can be rciicd upon for exactness of detail and copious direc tion. ' The same publishers are preparing to Issue an enlarged lifet of works in rapid succession. That ery welcome novelist, Mrs. Stephens, is writing a new novel, "The SolJicrs' Orphanu," lwhlch will, doubtless, be woithy of her extended fame. The reputation of this house for enterprise will not bo diminisHed by their conduct during the w 'uter season. Own P0ET3. By the Author of "Dora Dirling." Philadelphia Ageut: U. W. Pitener, No. SUH Ohesnut street. 'Our Poets" is the conclusion of "Dora Dar ling," and whi'.e it possesses power and interest, does pot equal in force the original btjry. It is a "sweetly" written work, aud leaves us in doubt whether it was intended lor children or adults. It is certainly interesting, although some parts of it approach the tedious. We doubt if the nature of the subject really war ranted a concl jsiou; bat as the author has seen tit to write one, we commend it for its interest and purity of style, as well as the neat manner :u which it is published. A Complete IIistoby ov tub Great Rebellion; or, Tub Civil War in tub United Status IS61-65. By James Moore, M. D., lute sur geon in the United States Army, author of 'Kilpatrick and our Cavalry." Philadelphia: Published by the Quaker City Publishing House, No. 927 Sansom street. This is a work of real valne, both for general reding and for reference. It contains 5.r2 pages of closely and handsomely printed matter, and U illustrated with mauy portraits of our heroes as well as btttle-scenes. The b"ok is well writ ten, and deserves a large sale. Dr. Moore is w ell known in Philadelphia as a graceful writer, rtuil he has had a vest experience with thearmy. Thin book Is not alone made up of the Doctor's persoual observations, but Is really what it pro tests to be, "A Complete History of the Rebel lion." The work is neatly prepured, and re flects great credit on both the author, printers, an 1 publishers. Beethoven's Letters (1790-1820. Translated by Lady Grace Wallace. Hurd A Houghton, New York. It is seldom that the titled nobility of Great Biitaio devote sufficient attention to literature as to enable them to present the world with a really good work. Especially is it true of the ladies. We, therefore, must give Lady Wallace great credit for the admirable translation before us a translation in which all the spirit of the original is retained, and euflicicnt of the idiom to remind us that it is a German and not an English work. So far, therefore, as the lady's part of the work is concerned, it is well done. After reading the two volumes before us, it seern doubtful whether the subject-matter of the contents i of sufficient importance to call for a publication. Beethoven's name is familiar to every American ear. His compositions are played daily in our streets. We sing his tunes on the Sabbath, and listen to his melodies on every piano-forte. His musical genius has made him a great man. Upcn it, and it alone, all his claims to fame rest. Is it wise, then, for his admirer to bring him before us as a Ullwaleur While his bonatos will live forever, there is nothing In his letters which will add one drop to bis cup of renown. He Is a poor letter-writer and the subjects ot which he treats are, with but a few exceptions, trivial and purely domes tii-. We are told ot his love for the Countess Guiletta Guicciardi, his "immortal beloved," mil such matters. None of them rUe to the dinnitY of being of public interest. B'L'bere Is, however, an Interest which attaches tself to tbe doings of all great men. We feel a curiosity about their doings and sayings. We like to ulve a personality to our idea of their ame, and therefore enjoy the petty details of their Uvea. Foeciall.v Is this true when tney express their own thoughts In letters. Therefore the edition of Just such private epistles as those of Beethoven are eagerly bought up and gene- rxiWread. Ther tu nometh n2 in our nature w bich revolts aeanut th'.s tearing aside ol the veil of privacy which ought to shroud the secrets ot the dead, and bringing his love-letters a It critical public eye. But as such Is th THE DAILY EVENING TEL custom, we give the Beethoven letters a much credit as belongs to any work of this class. There arc many of thorn without date, which causes considerable confusion, but are mue of them so pre-eminently important as to warrant a selection from them as an evidence of their style. To all lover of Boelhoven's music we commend tbis reliable chronicle of his private thoughts and actlous. G. W. Pitcher sends us a chromo repre senting young ducks, some swimming, some sitting on the bank, and all in attltudo true to nature. The coloring is admirable, and the whole plate Is woithy of being framed and placed upon our parlor walls. It Is admirably executed, and is one of the bwt affairs of the kind which lias lallcu under our notice. L. Prang & Co., of Boston, are the publishers. eclvcd, through J. B. Lippin eott A Co., a copy of John Minor Botts' "Great Rebellion," which Harpers have just published. The lateness of the hour necessitates our post poning an extended review until next week. LITERARY NOTES. Jlfssr?. Richardson A Co. are about to pub Hnh "War Poetry of the South," a handsome volume 01 r lour hundred and eiuty-two pages, Mr. William Gdtnore Simms, and con- edited by Munnsr over 10 nunarea specimens or verse, pood, bad, and indiiferent. As a Cjllectlon it compares fuvorablv, we think, with the earlier collections of Mr. Frank Moore and Mr. Richard Grant White. "Though fi'Otjoual in it character," tnyn Mr. 81111111s in his preiace, "and indicative of a tompnr and a UtIihk which were iu conflict with nation ality, jet, now that tlio Ma'et oi tno Union have. Iiccu resolved into ono nation, this collection i essentially as much the properly ol the whole as are tbe captured camion which were employed airant it during the prows ol the late mar. It belongs to the national literature, and will hereafter bu re cardtd as constituting a proper part of it, just as legitimaielr to be recognized by tbe nation as aro the rival ballads ot the Cavaliers and Moundhcads by the KngUsh, in the treat civil conflict ot their couutiy." All tbe Southern poets with whom wc were previously acquainted arc represented in its pases. Among the best known names are those of Mr. lleury linirod, M r. Paul II. Hayne, Mr. James Bttrrou Hope, Mr. John R. Thompson, Mr. A. J. ltequir, Mr. Alexander 0. Mocks, Mr. George II. Miles, Mr. Albert Pike, Mr. Ibmrv L. .Flush, Mr. James R. Randall, Mr. John Ksteu Cooke, aud Mr. Minima himself. Some ol the best lyrics in the volume are by rompaiatively unknown writers, a- Frank Tifknor, of Georgia, whose "Old It i Hem a a" is an admirable little ballad. That prolitic poet. "Anonymous," has done himself, or possibly herselt in this instance, lull justice in this touch ing poem: ENLISTED TO-DAY. I know the sun shines, and the lilacs are blow ing, And summer sends kisses by beautiful May Oh J to see all the treasures' the spring is be stowing, And think ray boy Willie enlisted to-day. It seems but a day since at twilight, low hum-mine-, I locked him to sleep with his cheek upon mine. While Robby, the four-year old, watched for the coming Of father, adown the street's Indistinct line. It is many a year since my Harry departed. To come buck no more in ihe twilight or dawn: And Robby grew weary of watching, and started Aloue on the journey his lather had gonu. It is many a yenr and this afternoon sitting At Bobby's old window, I heard the band play, Aud suddenly ceased dreaming over my knit ting, To lecollect Willie is twenty to day. Aud that, standing beside hira this soft May-day morning, Tbe sun making gold of his wreathed cigar smoke, 1 saw in his sweet eyes and lips a faint wurniu?, Aud choked down the tears when he eagerly spoke: "Dear mother, you know how these Northmen are crowing, They would trample the rights of the South in tbe oust: The boys are all lire; and they wish I were going " lie stopped, but his eyes said, "Oh, say if I must!" I smiled on the boy, though my heart seemed brettking. My eyes tilled with tears, so I turned them away. And answered him, "Willie, 'tld well you are waking Go, act as your father would bid you, to-day !" I fit Iu tbe window, and see Ihe flnt;8 flying, And drearily list to the roll of tbe drum. And smotner the pain that in my heart is lying, And bid all tbe lenrs in uiy doboiu oe dtimo. I thall Hit In the window, when summer is lyitit? Out over the heldj, am! tbe Honey-Dee's hum Lulls the roue at the porch from her tremulous bigninK, And watch for the face ofmv darling to come. And if be should fall his young life he has (jiven For Ireedom's sweet sake; and forme, I will Dtav ( inco more with my narry and Robby in naven To meet tne aear ooy tnat euusieu to-uay. Mr. John Enten Cooke writes the following pi.usr, fiom Millwood, near Winchester, Vir ginia: ir. exiljs. In liht or gloom that memory come AcroB9 the rollinir loum I puss aain to earlier years, And dream of you and home ! You walk the bright Virginia woods, The winds are tow and sweet The trumpet flower burns in the hedge, Tbe bluth ro9e round your feet: The tulips whisper overhead, The dove coos in the tree. As on that evening long atro When you were all to me ! The dear Virginia lilies bloom For you: the roses blow; Beside the rock-ribbed ocean's marge An exile wanders slow Deep in the old memorial wood 1 see you, musinsr, roam And think "There's nothing half so sweet As thoughts of youth and home I" -Mr. Georce F. narrineton. author of "Inside, a Chronicle ot Secession," will commence a new tale in tho December number ot Harpers Monthly, under the title Ot "Tne Virginians in Texas." This tale is of special Interest at the present time, we are assured on the cover ol the mupuKine, as It sets ionn wuai wan tore tue war, what it would now have been but for tho war, and what tt may yet become, not- wnnsiuDaiiip; the war, wncn iincriy i nmuiou, law maintained, etc. etc. Tbis is promising, certainly, though how it could have been accom- piiRDeu in a xuie written oetore ine Drifunuin uuv of tbe war. as this nurnorts to have been, is what, we cannot exactly see, Hretotore it was the poet who claimed the gift of prescience; but it seems now tbat the uovelists are beginning to make tho same pretensions, and, we dare say, on Just as substantial grounds. A larire rlnthinrr finnan In London has lately taken to publishing a monthly periodical under tbe title of the Aldqate Magazine. Who its writers are we are not informed, but, if we may Judge bv their enm positions, the ink with which they write is larsrcly diluted with water we pre sume, uoiu me Aiugate rump.
