House Kobbebt. Yesterday morninsr,
about the hour of 3 o'clock, the house of Mr.
Sargent, in Amber street, near Ana, whs broken
into by a couple ol burglars. They went
thriuprh the house and ransacked it pretty
tb.orounb.ly. A gold watr:h bclonsinir to Mr.
Sarjrent, and valued at $1100, was Ptoleu, and
the robbers were in tho act of riflintr the pockets
of his pantaloons, when he awoke, and snatch
ing up his revolver, lit a lamp and went after
the thieves. They, however, effected their

alter, Charles Flick was arrested In Dutch Row,
a well-known locality In the Twenty-first Ward,
above the Reading Railroad, by Otlicer Quick,
and Andrew Flommer was also taken in charge
by Officer Orant on Trenton avenue. They were
taken before Alderman Clouds, and it is said
at the preliminary hearine Mr. Sargent recog
nized the two as the persons who were in his
house yesterday morning. Tbey were held in
$3000 each lor a further henring on a charge of
pnspicion of larceny.
His Own Bkst Customek. A certain
gentleman, who shall bo nameless, wa recently
the appointee ot the Government to the honor
able po'ition of Wta-sfcy Inspector. It appears
that, haviLg a conscientious deeira to fulnl the
duties ot his office as .strictly as he could, he
would not put a mark on a barrel without a
thorough Inspection of its contents. The conse
queuce was that, ere he had inspected many
barrels of the "essence of old rye," he was pretty
well "corned," and in fact was pretty far "gone."
He was taken in charge by the police at Walnut
and Water streets, and taken before Aldorman
Butler, who, after admonishing him on the evils
of intemperance, fined him, and held him in
$300 bail not to do so again, and sent him away
a wiser, it not a better roan.
A Misdemeanor. A few days since, at a
free fight at Broad ami Spring Garden streets, a
man was severely beaten and had his nose bit
off. One or two of the party engaged in the
outrage were arrested at the time. A warrant
was also isHued by the Mayor for the arrest of
Paul Berteny, who was also engfged in Ihi
frolic. He managed to elude the police until
yesterduy, when he came under the eye of the
police authorities, and was arrested at Fifteenth
and Brown streets. He had a hearing before
Alderman Hutchinson, who held him lu $tu lor
a further hearing in the eae.

24. The umpire was Mr. N. D. Woolman, of the
"Hamilton." The Municipals showed some line
playing, particularly Lieutenaut Tolbert and

Whabf Rat. Ilenry Williams, who Is
alleged to be one of that class of two-leeged ver
min that infest our river fronts, wis arrested at
Front and Dock streets, with a quantity of
stolen crockerj-ware in his possession, it is
alleged that the enterprising youth had ab
stracted the articles in qtiestion from one of the
crafes on the wharf. He had a hearing this
morning be lore Alderman Butler, and was com
mitted in default ol $700 ball to answer.

Thfl tenor of Hip reports received by the

the past six months, of a niitiire which Inspires
the hope that tho aitiinosi'.ii s and prejudices
remit Inn from the war arc rapllly fudiitir out,
especially in the Southeastern and Border Stales.
A marked diminution in the number of outraees
committed upon tho iredmen is oD-ervab!?.
A growine disposition Is manifested by the
civil authorities at most ot th centres of popu
lation to care for th destitute anion? the freed
men, and the Inclination to administer the Itws
with impartiality between whites and blarks
makes sure but gradual l.Mgrcss. The most
prolific cause of complaint at the present time
is the (treat difficulty encountered by the plan
ters and their hands In agreeing upon a division
of the crops.
Disputes of this kind generally terminate iu
favor oi' the employer, and where it la apparent
that the civil courts will not adjudicate lairly
in these cases, aents of the Bureau have been
constrained to interfere to secure justice; and
that they have done so to the satisfaction ot all
parties concerned many of the more intelligent
and prominent planters have frequently testified
in writing to the Assistant Commissioners.

Nbw IUvkn, Conn., November 9. The Hon.
Lafayette Foster, President of the United
States Senate, deliveted a lectur-, last cvenina,
before the members of the Merchants' Ex

subject was "The 'm Great jWest and I "IT!T
sources," in which he gave a description ot tae
Western country he had viited last summer, by
appointment of the rtovemment, to Inquire info
the resources of the Western country and con

He spoke of the Une scenery and surface of
the country passed through, also of the tine
mineral springs, and referred to the bufTalo
huntr, fhe Indiaus, and other iutcivsting sub
jects relating to the Far West. He dwelt at
some length upon the necessity of railroad
communication with the Far West, and remarked
when the Pacific Railroad was built it would
turn tLe trade to San Francisco and New York,
and thee two cities would then bocjme tue
chief commerciat centres in the world. Vice
President Foster spoke tor over an hour, and
was listened to with marked attention by a lurjo

the Manhatan, in which steamer he came from

some business ot Max's to attend to, and this Is
what no one has yet been able to elicit from
him. All Is conjecture. There are two circum
stances that have struck me very forcibly, as
they tally perfectly well. One is tbat by the
laft accounts Maximilian was on his way to
Vera Cruz, and the other is that several of our
empty mansions seem to have drawn the special
attention of Maximilian's Chamberlain.
