LADIES' DKES3E3 IN PARIS.
la Crinoline Out of KnxlilonI
The correspondent of the London fost at
Jans, having rWived letter irom luriii'S in
KnRiand hi-gnmR him to iuiorm them whether
ciiuohne is in or out of fashion in l'urm. writes
in reply:
"1 meet in the. streets of Pari-', and somc
timea at an cveninp r Cfpiin;.',, n tonet of the
pcrioa of the First Empire, short-walsted, and
certainly there can bu no criuollno or iron
hooped nnjihinff under a somewhat scanty
rolie, pucU as a Lady Jersey danced lu at
Alniack's in the dnt of George IV. You ace
the pretty feet, and'some idea may be arrived
at u to bow nature has sculptured the whole
ot tne graceful lomale torm. At the pro.nenado
in the Ilois you meet with ladies whose dresses
peacefully respond to the movements of the
tramej and ceittiuly theie cannot De anj cun
ningly conceived substructure ot steel and
textile substaoocs under that Empire style of
costunie. I therefore conclude that there are
ladies of fashion moving 11 bout in the most re
fined sociotv honestly without crinoline; but
they are noi yet a majority. You find most
ladies, on the contrary, wearing dresses which
spread out at the bottom, and show a tram
whieh begins to be as long as thoBe worn ut
court, f rom the waist downwards tlm ever
spreading trailing robe must be supported by
some material? Is It crinoline? Is it juoe In
another shape, or is it amassot clustering under
clothing of cotton or linen ? How am I to find
out that I have watched sublimely grand
I idics get out of a cariiage, under the impres
sion tnat the accident of events might enable
one to forma pretty good opinion about the
presence of crinoline. But vojupet erryes ever
turned up: the robe falls into a monotonous
Bpread, trails on the ground, and is as irritating
to purrountiiug human nature a the old crino
line nuisance. Ontlemeu have to dodge about
in the rira wing-room, and on the pathway of
gardens and parks.
'In the streets of Paris some ladies wear a
dress which appears to be crinolinelesB, until it
suddenly and abruptly spreuds out at the bot
tom as if a single hoop were employed. What
is this? A windy day at the seaide might
relieve one's doubting mind. I sirongly suspect
this i the last ring a horrid cage. If crinoline
is expiring, it dies hard in Park. The ladies at
the markets still wear crinoline, and so do the
ladies of the kitchen, therefore I suspect crino
line is hovering still about in ail classes of
society. Mow, those interested in this mo
mentous question will fay, Why dou't you go to
tue tashion books for iuf'oniiation ? Ask an
audience of M e W 1, in the Eue de la
Paix. Do you think you can say anything
positive after all this? One magazine of the
fashions tells tin: 'Taking our impressions from
certnin high indications we think we may go so
far as to declare that a gradual abandonment of
crinoline la taking pluce in all classes of so
ciety.' You then turn to the colored plates,
aud there you h'nd a aies worn by a lovely
creature, the bottom ot which is occ;iiviug
nearly the whole width of the plate. What
keeps out its vast spreading proportions? If
you ask me to sum up, my answer Is, I believe
crinoline is only half out and something quite
as bad is hnlf in. We are probably pacing
through a period of transition. It will be very
interesting for some time to come to look for
the day when humanity can write Orino'ina
fuil."
The Mont Blanc Catastrophe.
AI.riNB GUIDES SEARCHING FOB THE DEAD.
A letter from Chamounix says: "Twenty-six
guides left the Grauds Mulcts at 6 A. M. yester
day tor the Grand Plateau; their progress was
watched with great interest by means ot pow
erful glasses, until at last they were observed to
divide into parties ot twos and threes, and for
some tune to wander to and fro, when they
were observed to collect together on one spot,
to the right of the Kocher Houge,' and troiu
the many auxious glances tht were given
through all the available glasses in Chamounix,
the conclusion come to was that they had dis
. covered some traces of the poor fellows.
"This surmise turned out to be true, lor a t2 30
eight sruides were despatched to Chamounix
with the sad news that tney bad recovered the
bodies of the two porters (Joseph and Francois
Tournier),aud that they had let I eighteen guides,
with the imiefatigable'Silven Couttet diligently
searching for some traces of poor Captain Ark
wrlght and his guide, ginioud Michel. Alter
toiling away until nearly dusk, they had to re
turn to the GraDds Mulcts unsuccessful in find
ing the leant trace of Captain Arkwright for his
guide. At midday the weather bad taken a sud
den change, and a very heavy snow-storm began
to tall, which very much, increased the dangers
aud difficulties tba guides had to encounter, but
towards evening the heavens had cleared again,
and a Que frosty evening set in. This morning
the remaining caravan of guides (nineteen) lett
the Gtands Mulets at 7 o'clock to return to
t humounix with the bodies of the two porters,
and, as I now write, bait past 1, the sad proces
sion is slowly marching into Chamounix with
out having met with the least trace of Captain
Aikwrigiu or his guide, Himond Michel."
Demand for Labor in Australia. In a report
from Mr. Moody, the immigration agent at Mel
bourne, respecting the description of labor in
demand in the colony, it is stated tnat ''the pre
sent exceptional year of severe droueht has. in
riany localities, affected the deniani lor labor.
The effect, however, baa been principally felt
by those persons engaged in mining pursuits,
while, from information which I have been able
to procure from various districts, the demand
for agricultural and general labor has been en
