A stated meeting of this Society was held yesterday. Colonel Craijr Biddle, President, in the chair. A iol of wheat from the Agricultural Department, Washington, was received aud distributed. Mr. John MsGowan exhibited a lot ot iine beets, carrots, and parsnips, and also niude tue following statement in reference to the product of six acres of ground cultivated by him during the present year: Strawberries, raspberries, etc., sold, $450; also 300 bushels potatoes, 175 do. carrots, 150 do. beets, 60 do. .parsnips, 80 do. corn, 7J do. buckwheat, 50 do. ruta-bagas, 2000 heads cabbage, with a large variety of trarden vegetables, etc.. lor family use. Mr. McGowan also made the following statement in reference to the planting ot early Goodrich potatoes: I planted in hills three feet apart between rows, and about two and a half leet in the rows, 6 bushels large, which produced 40 bnhels; 6 J of second size, 63 bushels; 6 do. of third size, 63 bushels; 2 J buohels of quite small ones, plowed in every other furrow, about a toot apart in the row, produced 34 bushels; a half bushel of large ones, cut to single eyes, produced 12 bushels. Colonel Biddle presented a communication from Clement R. Penrose, Esq., in reference to spiaying cows. He stated thut at the time of the operation the cow was giving ten quarts of milk . a day. For a few days after it the quantity was very small, but it gradually increased until in the course of a few weeks it was, if anythinic, rather more than the original measure. The quality was decidedly improved, and the butter made lrom it of the most beautiful aud golden color. George W. Childs. A. J. Drexel, and C. W. Trotter, Esqs., were nominated as members ol the Society. Dr. Thompson moved that a committee of three be appointed ta report upon the different varieties and culture ot potatoes. Agreed to. The Chair appointed Messrs. Dr. Thompson, John McGowan, and A. W. Harrison. Dr. Kennedy gave an interesting account of the extension of steam agricultural machinery in Europe, and called the attention of the So ciety to the necessity of ottering premiums for encouraging the introduction of steam machi nery in this country. The Doctor al60 exhibited specimens of the English Vetch, a plant used for food for cattle. It is sown with oats instead of clover. Ad journed. The Gas Wobks Investigation. The Special Committee of Select Council appointed to Investigate into the management of tue Phi ladelphia Gas Works, met last evening in Select Council Chamber. Mr. Mcllvaine, who made the contract for stop-cock boxes, appeared voluntarily and ex plained that matter. The boxes had patent iron tops. He said he paid one dollar for these tops, and made about forty cents profit on the whoie article. Tuere were no commissions paid by him to the Trust. Ho made the contract, and received his money. A witness named Robert Patterson said that he sold brick, to Conrad, Doeppers & Co., of Kensington, and tried to get them into the works. Trustee, when applied to, said he "wouldn't introduce ihero. It was not a fair thing to the Trustees. He wouldn't do it on another Trustee, and wouldn't let another do it on him." Mr. Patterson said he was told that if he would give live hundred dollars he could have his bricks introduced into the Trust. He would not pay it. The oiler, he believed, came indi rectly from a Trustee. It wasn't Mr. Groves nor Mr. Miller, but he declined to state who it was. Mr. Doeppers, another witness, said that the prices for tire brick paid by the Trust in the year 1866 were pretty lair prices. The Committee recommended the publication bv the rtporters present of the statement of Mr. Mcllvaine. The testimony taken last week re flected on the Trust. The explanation of Mr. Mcllvaine, removing this apparent censure, the Committee desires to be freely given to the pub lic. Colonel Page and Mr. Barlow both advo cated this. A New Steamship. Reaney & Son are now constructing, at Chester, a tirst-clas iron steamship. &he is 212 feet long on water line, thirty-four eet beam, and twenty leet depth of hold. The hull is built to pass Lloyd's Al for twelve years, and Is the tlrst iron ship that has leen built of this class in this country, and nothing has been omitted by the Company to make her such a ship as the people of this city may be proud of. She will be driven by a pro peller, her euclne having a cylinder fbrty-Bve inches in diameter, and thirty-six inches stroke. The grate surface ot boilers is two hundred and ten square feet Finding What was Not Lost. William M. Williams was before the Alderman at the Central Station yesterday, on the charge of stealing a pocket-book containing ninety-Cve "dollars, the property ot John Thompson. Com plainant testified to the theft, which he said took place in Hudson's alley. John Kuhn, re siding at No. 136 S.
