TOE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILDELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 18GG.
Miss I nnnic Seward.
Secretory Sewur1 lias sustained another be
reavement, in u liliiion to tho pcrsotml sorrows
whv h have fallen upon him so thickly of Hte,
In the flenth ot his daughter and yoiiiipet
chilli,' Fiiiinio, which took; place, yesterday
roorriiifr, as sta'cd .n the lollowing despatch
from the Secretary of War:
Washington, October 2i. I deeply reeret to
inform you that Alms Fannlo Seward died at
6'3a this mornlnp. We tltou-jlit until last even
mjr that nlia wa' improving, ai "lie. certainly
was lor the lagt tlirea days. Lut hor Btrcngtii
suddenly failed utter Ihe lever went down.
There will bo a linn-ril coreiiiouy here on
Wednesday, and then her remains will bo taken
to Auburn. En-vis M. Stanton.
Since the denth of lils wile,. Mr. Seward's
affections have cIuhr most closely and fondly to
bis daughter, whone character, rcscmblina; her
mother's,, was well calculated to win love and
tender recard from all who knew her. She Whs
rminenily quiet aui unobtrusive in her manner,
shrinking always Irom public notice, seeking
bappmo's in ti pursuits, duties, and enjoy
ments of domestic life, and intniateiing with
constant and solicitous assiduity to the wants
and wellare of those around her. Yet
she bad a strength ol character far be
yond what any casual observer would detect,
and was equal to any cverncDey, no matter how
tryinu and terrible It.m'iL'ht be. The tearless
courase with which she threw herself between
her lather's breast and the uplifted knife of the
assassiu Payne, and the tenacity with which sue
dune to his arm, and sought to divert hi9 deadly
aim, attest this trait iu her character. Payne
afterwards said that if he could have ma le up
bis mind to strike ber out of his wav, he could
have accompliuncd his purpose upon the Secre
tary, but that her face, between his weaoon and
her father, disunited him; he h id not the heart
to take her lite also.
Mr. Seward's attachment (o her was always
most warm and devoted. While traveling in
Europe he never retired at nieut without writ
ing (o ber full descriptions of all he had seen
and heard during the day; the was always in
his thoughts when absent, and always closely
watchful of his comfort and happiness at home.
That home, already so shadowed with gloom,
will be darker than ever now that she who gave
it so much of its light has left it forever. .V.
