THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY OCTOBER 30, 1866.
INTKRESTING ITEMS.
A Study of Egyptian Briokt.rrofoflsor Uneer,
the VIcnnfFe Lolnnif-t and palirontolaelflt., has
recently published some remarks on tlie bricks
f the ancient Kpyptiau", especially those ol the
fiyramid of Dasbonr, which wau built about
bree thousand lour hundred years before our
era. One ct' them Icimr examined through the
Biicroncopf by the professor, he discovered that
.the mad of the Nile, out of which it was made,
contained not only a quantity of animal-vegetable
matter, but also fruetments of many mnnu
lactnrcd substanceH, whence wo may conclude
that ftfrjpt must have enjojed a hijfli decree of
civilization upwards of five thousand jears hro.
Professor Unger has been enabled, by the aid of
the microscope, to discover In these brlckb a
vast number of plants which at that time grew
in Ecypt. The chopped straw clearly discern
able In the body of the bricks confirms the
description of the manner of making the latter,
euch os we llnd In Herodotus and in the Book
of Exodus.
An Indian Curiosity Among the Oriental
curiosities in the Loan Exhibition at .Southamp
ton, England, is an olliclal danger of a Hindoo
bard, the property of Mr. Tennyson. The fol
lowing curious statement has been aflixert to it
by the poet: ,-In Guzcratare a number of petty
chiefs called Tnakoors, whose condition some
what resembles that of the old Highland chief
tains of Scotland, or did so a lew years ago.
Each chieltain had bis family bard, who wis
also the family historian. These bards were
called Bhals, Barotes, Bharuts, or Charuns. No
treaty or marriage settlement was complete
unless countersigned by the bards of the re
spective lam i lies, whose signature was a ru le
representation of the kutha, or dagger, worn
by them. These daggers were often heirlooms,
and by no means easy to get. This one belonged
to the family of Bha, or Charun, of Veerauga
mm , a town about torty miles lrom Ahmonda
bad, In Guzerat, Presidency of Bombay."
Town Population of Russia. According to a
statistical paper just published, Ruusia (not in
cluding Poland) contains at present 414 towns,
each with upwards ol 5000 inhabitants; '207 with
from 6H)0 to 10,000; 01 taving from 10,000 to
30.000; thirty up to 30.000; seven up to 40,000:
six up to 60,000; three of between 50,000 and
60,000; seven ot between 00,000 and 80,000; one
ot between 80,000 and 100.000. Three cities only
nave populations uoove luo.uoo; they are
Odessa, the chief port on the Black Sea, with
119,000; Moscow, the ancient capital, with
325,000; and 8t. Petersburg, the preseut capital,
which numbers 640,000. Altogether, 775 towns
and cities, giving a total of 6,873,720 inhabit
ants. A Model Huntsman. A French paper publishes
the following anecdote concerning the Emperor
of Austria while out shooting: "His Majeety is
always attended by a Caplain of the Guards,
whose duty It is to observe the effect of each
shot and announce it. The Emperor, for in
stance, strikes a partridge. 'Partridge 1' cries
the captain. Next time it is a buck. 'Buck 1'
shouts the captain. One day the Emperor tired,
missed bis game, and wounded one of the gen
tlemen of his suite.-, The latter, on being struck,
Tittered an exclamation. 'His Highiiees the
Dnkeof Hackeubergl' announced the captain,
without the slightest change of feature or tone."
A Chemist's Discovnry. An Austrian chemist,
M. Lcinelbrock, has discovered a way of enclos
ing electricity in small glass capsules which
will explode under the slightest shock. The
capsule lo enclosed in a steel cone, so thnt if
shot from a rifle it will enter the flesh, an 1 the
explosion which follows is sufficient to kill a
man. Experiments have been made on oxen
and horses with perfect success, these animals
having lallen down as if struck with lightning.
A Horse Jockey Caught. A curious horse case
has been tried in Paris. Count Edgar de Pras
lin lately bought a hack of Tony Moutel, (he
well-known Champs Elysees dealer, for 140,
put the next day, when its hools were wa-hed.
It was found that they were lull of holes and
creases, which bad been cleverly plugged with
tar and caoutchouc, and then finished oil' wita
black varnish. Montel unsuccessfully pleaded
the usage ot the trade. He was sentenced to
take the horse back, refund its price, and pay
all the expenses and costs ot the suit.
Curious Relics at High Frizes The ivory arm
chair presented Dy the city of Lu beet touus
tavns Vasa was sold In 1825 to M. Schinkol, a
chamberlain of the King of Sweden, for 120,000
francs; the prayer book used bv Charles I ot
England on the scaffold fetched 2500 francs; the
coat worn by Charle9 XII at the battle of Pul
towawas sold in Edinburgh for 501,000 francs;
and in 1816, Lord Schwarterbury gave 16,695
francs for a tooth of Newton, which is now set
in a ring and worn by the eldest branch of that
family.
A Witness Rejected In a London police
court, not long since, a witness about to be
sworn said that if he kissed the book he should
feel bound to speak the truth; but he did not
believe in the doctrine of lutnre rewards and
punishment according to the sense in which
men ordinarily undex stood it. He did not be
lieve he should be punished in a future state if
lie did not speak the truth. The Justice de
clined to administer the oath to a man enter
taining such opinions, "and his evidence was not
received.
A Good Suggestion. "A Travelled Parson"
, writes to an English paper: "In some parts of
Germany every bottle containing poison is
labelled with a death's head and cross-bon)s, as
black as printer's ink can paint them. Every
parcel of poisonous medicine sent to the patient
baa a similar label over the address. Pray help
me to urge upon our chemists and druggists the
adoption of this very simple method, which is
plainly within the comprehension of the dullest
boy that ever handled a pestle and mortar."
The Irish Emigration. The emigration from
the South ol Ireland, partially suspended
during the harvest, is revlvine. The Cork Exa
miner remarks that "a considerable portion of
the emigration takes place through prepaid
tickets, the friends of parties in America paying
their passage-money there, and during the past
month the number of prepaid passages has
greatly increased. This shows the great anxiety
of the Irish in America to have their country
men out there."
A Prosperous Paruh. At a recent meeting of
the rate-payers of the parish of St. Mary Stain
ing, Wood street, London, it was stated by one
t the almoners of the bequest of Henry John
?wi' w.sftyer' wno died eleven years since,
n)!e ,QiMueB of 100 sterling to six per

Eugenie Fulfils a Vow. The Paris jouru.. .
announce that the Empress Eugenie has placed
In the Church de Notre Dame des Yictoires a
magnificent lamp, bearing the initials, L. N.,
which is to burn perpetually before the high
altar. It is a present to which is said to be at

Lucky. A foreign paper relates that, when
passing through Baden-Baden, on his way to
Biarritz, Count Karolyi, the Austrian diploma
tist, went Into the gambling-rooms, and placed
stone money at random on a number of the
roulette. Presently be was informed that he
bad won 70,000 floriaa..
A Thief's Suicide. A suicide ot a curious de
scription has been committed by a French thief,
who rejoiced in the soubriquet of Pompette.
He had failed in an attempt on an Iron safe, and
cither disgusted with his clumsiness or his lm
ple aunts, he hanged himself on a tree.
