Mr. Marcus moved thai a sub-commlitee be
appointed to prepare an ordinance providing for
the erection ol a House of Correction, the said
oidinance to be submitted to the committee
before reporting to Councils.
Hon. Joseph R. Chandler referred (o the neces
sity of a House of Correction for the nurpose of
anordinfr a place of continemenl for the va-rants
who are found in our streote, became neither

Mr. Marcus withdrew his motinn. nnrt one
was adopted to the effect, "that it is the iudir
nient of tdis committee that a House of correc
tion should be erected as soon as possible."
Mr. Marcus then moved that a committee of
seven be appointed to report a detailed plan for
the erection cf a House of Correction, which
w as agreed to.
Meeting of the Union Benevolknt
Association. The regular annual meeting; of
the above association was held yesterday alter
noon at their room, Seventh and Sansom streets.
Samuel H. Perkins presided. The thuty-Otrn
annual report ol the Board was made, iu w'al li
it 18 said that in summing up the work there is
found to be a marked increioe ol liibor per
formed over previous years. The details of the
report of the ludies' branch not only sUows this,
but also shows an Increase of interest' and oi
. greater eameetnt ss on the part of the visitors, who
bad found an element for the exercise of their
patriotism, as well as their charity, in the dis
tress which has lollowed many of the soldiers
home from the fields they have won. The Union
Benevolent Association will never deny tbem
aid while there is the means to help them. The
whole amount of money distributed last year by
visitors lorn appropriations by the general
Board was $3805; ironi collections made bvtue
visitors themselves, $259-fu2; Irom the office, in
cluding wages paid as aid, $1100: amount paid

store ot the society, $703-07; cash value of 1710

made to the poor was 16,12s; number of fami
lies under charge, 69!)5; sick administered to,
1417; ot pprsons found employment, including
domestics and places in families, 1243; children
placed at school and Sunday School, 108; per
sons, including: children, found asylums, 43.
Thomas Latimer, Esq., submitted the follow
ing, which was adopted:

Stated Meeting of the Boabd of
Trade. The October meeting, of the Executive
Council ot the Philadelphia Board of Trade was
held on Monday eveninsr, John Welsh, Esq., the
President ot the Board, In the chair.
The leport of Mr. Houder, as chairman of a
committee passed at the May session to respond
to a communication from the Hon. W. Eliot
Chairman of Uie Committee on Commerce of
the Houte of Representatives of the United
States Congress, respecting the necessity and
propriety of national recognition and aid in re
lerence to the improvement of the Southwest
Pass,.or Pass l'Outre of the Mississippi, recora--Snending
action favorable to the undertaking,
was read and continued by the Board.
A donation from William J. Swain, Esq., of an
elegant copy of "Webster's Unabridged Diction
ary," was received and ordered to" be suitably
acknowledged by the Secretary.
A resolution highly commendatory of the sta
tistical chart recently compiled by William O
NeiLn, Esq., of the Iron aud Steel Assoc iation
was leierred to the Committee of the Month lor
more formal action.
A communication from the San Francisco
Chumber of Commerce, treating of the opening
of new currents ot trade, under the Influence of
modern enterpribe, and new facilities for inter
communication, aud the proper national policy
in reference to them ; the piotectiomof the inte
rests ot commerce in eastern countries by new
naval Btations and by an improved cousular
system; and the extension of the telegraph sys
tem, so as to place San Francisco and the United
States generally in communication with the
Asiatic continent, was read.
The subject was referred to the Committee of
the Mouth.
Committee of the Month Measrs. Coales,
Perot, and Faust.
Postponement of Revenue Infringe
ment Cakes. The CRses ot Charles Slunk and
Thomas 1. Basin, charged with placing fulse
inspection marks on barrels of distilled wliiHky,
was postponed for another week. There is a
civil fuit pending brought bv Samuel C. Ulmar
and John P. Boyle A Co., of Xew York, against
Thomas. R. Eauin, to recover the money ad
vanced by them on whisky ordered, some ten
or twelve thousand dollars.
The Water Department. The follow
ing statement shows the amount of wafrr
pumped by the different worls during Septem
ber, 18C6: Fall-mount, 050,144,131 gallons;
Schuylkill, 84,7110,760; Delaware, 163,(i82,320;
Twenty-fourth Ward, 64.C97.140; Germantown,
14.290.800. Total, 92G,C06,151 gallons. Average
per day, 30,886,838 gallons.
Another Accident. Henry Shall, forty
nine year old, while at work vosterdtty in an
establishment near Fifth street and Girard
venue, was caught by the belting and carried
around the shaft with fearful velocity. Both
legs were broken, and the injuries, it was
thought, would prove fatal. He was removed
to the hospital

and the attendance of members was quite largo.
Tho exhibition of plants, cut flowers, etc., was
very tine. Mr. A. L. Felten, gardener, exhibited
a large and fine collection ot vegetables, among
which was a tinejipecimen of cardoan, which is
served for the table like asparagus. The first
premium was awarded tor the collection. Wil
liam Joyce, gardener of the late M. W. Baldwin,
exhibited a number of ripe pineapples, which
attracted much attention. A California pump
kin, weighing 105 pounds, was also exhibited.
The collection of pears, grapes, and applci was
exceedingly fine.
Light-Finger ed. Two enterprising fe
male undertook to raise a pair of noa from a
store In Second street, above Wharton, yester
day. Their names are Julia and Minnie Sparks.
It was alleged that one of them engaged the
attention of the shopkeeper while tfie other
appropriated a pairol shoes. They were taken
before Alderman Lutz, who held them In bail
to answer.
Election of a School Controller.
At a meeting of the. school directors of the
Seventeenth Section ou Monday night, Mr.
William C. Kline wa elected a Controller in
p)ace of Air, James MoMxnes, whose term of

election of Mr. McMane?, represented the sec
tion in the Board of Controllers.
English IIocbe Sparrows. Mr. Dixey,
CommiBsioner of City Property, has received a
large number of house sparrows from Eng
land, which he intends placing in the public
squares and parks in the spring. He will keep
them iu a cage during the coming winter.
