THE BATTLE OF 11 ED BANK.
By Hon. George F. Bancroft.

Ilowe anchored between New Castlo and Keerty
Island, it was tho nnd.llu of October be tote
they could open a narrow and intricate channel

topper works were untouched; and the forts on
Red Hank anil Mud Island were garrisoned by
Continental troops; the lormer unaer the com
mand oi Colonel Cnrlslopbcr Orcetic, of Rhode
Islam), the latter under that of Lieutenant
Colonel Samuel Smith, of Maryland. Meantime
Sir William Ilowe, trora the necessity of concen
trating his force, ordered Clinton to abandon
Fort Clinton, on the Hudson, and to send him a
reinforcement of 'full six thousand men.' He
removed his army from (.'iruiantown u Phila
delphia, and protected it by a line of formica
tions irom the Schuylkill to the Delaware.
"On the morninir of the 18th a mcssenp,er
airlved in camp, bruising letters Irom Putnam
and Clinton prematurely but positively an
nouncing the surrender of the army of Bur
fcoyne. Washington received them with toy
unspeakable and devout gratitude 'for this
-signal stroke ol Providence.' 'All will be well,'
he said, 'in His own good time.' The news cir
culated among the Americans in every direc
tion, and quickly penetrated the camp of Sir
William Howe. 'The ditliculty ot access to Fort
Island had rendered its reduction much more
tedious than was conceived;' under a teeUmr of
exasperated impatience he gave verbal orders to
Colonel Donop, who had expressed a wish for a
separate eoinmand, to carry Bed Pauk by assault
It it tould be eaily done, and make sb'jrt work
Of the atlair. On the 22d, Donop, with five regi
ments oi Hessian grenadiers ana inlantry, four
com antes ot yagers, a few mounted, yapren, all
the artillery ot the Bve battalions, and ttvo Eng
lish howitzers, arrived at the fort. Making
at once a reconuolssatce with bis artillery
officers, he found that on three sides It could be
appioached through thick woods within four
hundred yards. It was a pentagon, with a high
earthy rampart, nrotccted in flout bv an abattis.
The battery of efght 3-poundeis and two how
itzers was brougnt upon the right wing and
directed on the embrasures. At the tront ot
each of the lour battalions selected for the
assault stood a captain with the carpenters and
one nuuared men bearing tue lascines wnicu
had been hastily bound together. Mad alter
elorv. Douon. at balf-Dast 4. summoned the gar
rison in arrogant language. A dedance being
returned, he addressed a few words to his troops,
Each colonel placed himself at the head of his
division, and at a quurter before f, under the
protection ol a bri-k canonade from all
their artillery, thev ran forward and carried
the abattis. On clearing it tbey were embar
rassed by pitfalls, and were exposed to a terrible
lire of small arms and of grape shot from a con
cealed eallerv, while two galleys, which the
bus-lies had hidden, raked their flanks with
chain-shot. Yet the brave Hessians formed on
the glacis, filled tho ditch, aod pressed on
towards the rampart. But Donop, the officers
ot his staff, and more thnn half the other
officers, were killed or wounded; the men who
climbed the parapets were bea-.en down with
lances and bayonets; and as twilieht was coming
on, the assailants leu oar-it under the protection
of their reserve. Many ol the wounded crawled
away into the foreht, but Donop and a lew others
were leit Ueiiinci. me party marcnea duck

"As the British ships-ot-war which bad at
templed to lake part in the attack fell down
the river, the Anausta. ot sixty-four guns, and
the Merlin trie ate. grounded. Tho next day the
Augusta was set on tiro by red hot (-hot from the
American galleys and floating batteries, and
blown up before all her crew could escape: the
Merlin was abandoned and set on fire. From
the wrecks the Americans brought off two 24
pounders. .'Thank God,' reasoned John Adams,
'the glory is not iuimediately due to the Commander-in-Chief,
or idolatry and adulation
would have been bo excessive as to endanger
our liberties.'
"The Hessians, by their own account, lost in
the assault four hundred and two in killed end
wounded, of whom twenty six were officers.
Two colonels gave up their lives. Donop, whose
thigh was 6hatte'ed, lingered for tbree days:
and to Floury, who watched over his death bed
With- tenderness, he said : It is finishing a
noble career early ; Idle the victim of my am
bition and of the avarice of my sovereign.1 This
was the moment chosen by Howe to complain
of Lord Ueorue Germain, and to ak the king's
leave to resign his command; and he added that
there was no prospect of terminating the war
without another campaign, nor then, unless
large reinforcements, such as he knew could
not be furnished, should be sent from Europe."
