Fourth Ward Election Officers is
Trouble. On ihe 10th Inst.. Charles Simund
and Jacob L. Baugu, the lntterau election oll'icur
appointed by the (John ol Commou Picas, iu the
Fourth Ward, nppcnrprt at tho otlire of Mr. Ma
eifitrate lteltlcr, nd made the following alli
davit: Jacob L. Baupb being duly sworn, depose
nd savs that, on the 8th day of October, 1806,
be was appointed by the Judges of the Court of
Common l'leas a return inspector for the Sixth
Division of the Fourth Ward; that at twenty
minutes before 7 o'clock A. M. of Tuesday, the
Srth ol October. I860, he wus present at the poll
ing place of said division, and presented bis cer
tificate of appointment by said Court to the
Judge of said election division, and requested to
tie sworn in a return inspector; the said judge,
James Dillon, replied that said baueh had no
business there, and one Frank Finniean, a con
stable of said ward, threatened said limich
that, unless be left the table at which
tbe votes were to be received he would arrest
him (this deponent). This deponent refused to
leave, asserting that be was an oflicer of the
election, duly appointed by the court, and would
remain inside of the polls unless he was put out
by force. Whereupon Thomas J. Daeney seized
this deponent by the arm and shoulder and
forcibly ejected deponent Irom the room. This
deponent further says thnt his appointment as
return inspector as aforesaid b.ts been treated
with contempt by the election officers of the said
division, and that h? had no oppoitunity to per
form tho duties for which he was appointed.
The judge of the election (James Dillon) re
tained the certilleate of this deponent.

and says that he is a resident and a voter m
the Sixth Division or tho Fourth Ward; that he
saw Jacob Bsiigli, the duly appointed return in
spector of said division, twice lorcibly excluded
from the polls; said liiiueb was overawed and
overpowered by all the election officers inside
saidjiollinp Place, except James Sampson, and
was forcibly driven from the polls, aud at 11
o'clock, being four hours alter the opening of
said polls, one Edward Walker was admitted to
act in placo of said Baugh; said Walker having
been neither elected by the;voters nor appointed
by the Court as said return inspector.

were arraigned upon tbe charges specified in
tbe affidavit';, of assaulting Jacob L. baugh, an
election oflicer appointed by the Court of Com
mon Pleas of the c ounty ot Philadelphia, Octo
ber 8, I860, as return; inspector for the Sixth
Division of tbe Fourih Ward, forcibly ejecting
said Baugb from the room in which election
officers met for the purpose of conducting gene
ral election October 0, lstiG. and preventing mid
Laugh from discharging his duties as an elec
tion oflicer. Defendants waived a hearins, and
were held in $6U0 bail each to answer at Court.
TnE Auction Season. Tho week of
which to-day is the close has been a noteworthy
one in diy goods auctiou bales. Messrs. Fur
nes8, Brinley & Co. closed up last night a two
days' sale ot cloths. Lupin's mennoes, delaines
and bombazines, poplins, dress ffoods, as.l rib
bons, the net proceeds of wrhich will amount to
more than three bundled thousand dollars. The
sale was remarkable lor the very fine character
of its offerings. At least tive eighths of all tbe
goods presei.ted were adapted to Chesnut street
and Froadway first-class retail trade. Clouting,
cloths, silks, velvets, aud shawls were thus
given to the trude, without reserve, that only ut
Intervals come under the hammer. We observed
among the buyers many prominent men in the
trade from Baltimore, New York, Pittsburg, and
Cincinnati.
The sale of the cloths occupied the first day.
The poods brought full prices, which, as they
could not be duplicated, aud as the styles were
ot the verv best, was ot course to be expected.
Ihe double-width cloaking and coating cassi
nieres brought Irom nine dollars per yard down
ware s. Trie dress good aud ribbons were sold
yesterday, both sale progressing at the same
tune upon dillerent floors, Mr. Joshua Ash and
Mr. Briuley cohicidently doing duty as auc
tioneers. The sale was a splendid one. The
representative of Messrs. Benkard & Hutton, the
importers of the goods, was present, aud at the
close of the sale publicly thanked the uuction
firm lor the business-like niauner in which they
hadv performed what was certainly two days'
stupendous work,

the Globe hire Company, Oermautown road,
above Second street, to make arrangements for
the reception ot the Holla Fire Company, No. 2,

The Committee on Arrangements reported that
tbe visiting company would arrive at the Ken
sington depot on Monday next at 2 o'clock

Bask Ball Matcu for tub Champion
ship. On next Monday afternoon the tamed
baseball match between the "Athletic," of tins
city, and the "Atlantic," of Brooklyn, N. Y., the
pieent champions, for the great prize of the
championship of the Un.ted States, will take
pluce. The "Athletic" leave for New York to
morrow, Sunday, at OJ P. M., and arrangements
have been effected with the Camden aud Amboy
Railroad Company to issue excursion tickets to
New York at 1, good to go and return any time
between Sunday and the following Tuesday
evecina. These tickets will not ho sold at the
office of the railroud company, but can ouly be
obtained ut AL Reach's base Bail Headquar
ters, Chesuut street, above Fourth, and ouly
a limited number will be issued. The retur'u
game takes place on the Rounds 'of tbe "Ath
letic," Fifteenth aud Columbia avenue, ou
Monday afternoon, October 22. It has been de
termined to issue only four thousand tickets of
admission, at one dollar each, in order to secure
every spectator a comfortable) seat to witness
the match. These tickets also will only bo told
at Reach's. No doubt a great crowd will be
gathered at these matches, auJ they who would
tie present bad best not delay in obtaiuing
tickets.

Case. The inquest in tbecase ot Jol.ti Williams,
who was drowned at Leanue Island on October
7, wns concluded yesterday atternoon. Mr. Lee,
who was with htm when he disappeared in ihe
water, stated that be and Williams left Reed
sticet wharf late on Sunday night, September
30, lor the purpose of going on board a schooner
tn w hich they had shipped.
When about thirty yards from the shore tho
two quarrelled. During tho atiair Williams
drew a knife from his pocket and stabbed Lee
several times (wounds shown), when they
clinched, and both fell overboard. Lee then
swam ashore. The last he saw of Williams was
When he was getting into tbe boat. Lee then'
went to the Shipping House and made his state
ment, when he w as arrested and locked up for a
henrintr.
Pr. Shapleigh made a post-mortem examina
tion, but there were no marks ol violence on the
S;-rson of the deceased sufficient to cause bis
cath. The jury rendered a verdict of found
drowned.
Congregational. Rev. Samuel Falrlev,
au eminent Congregational divine, late of King's
Clirl, England, having received and accepted a
unanimous call to the pastorate of the First
Congregational Church in this city, will be ex
amined and installed by a council ot Congrega
tional churches to be held on Thursday after
noon next, in the chapel, Frankiord road and
Montgomery avenue. Since the commence
ment of this religious enterprise iu the summer
of 18U2, the denomination has been increased
by the addition of lour other new churches.
The last one, denominated the Plymouth Con
gregational Church, Rev. Frank Russell, pastor,
was organized last Sabbath in the hall, Ridce
avenue, below Jefferson street. Rev. L. ,V.
Hart, ot Brooklyn, preached the sermon.

Methodists have completed a very handsome
church edifice at Nineteenth and Poplar streets,
and it will be dedicated to-morrow. The build
ing is fi7 by 76 feet, with a basement for Sunday
Schools, class-rooms, etc. The oudienc-rooin
is ncatiy tinished with walnut. The walls nre
frescoed. The exterior is of Trenton brown
stone, and presents a very handsome appear

of the "Evening Star." Among the pussen
pers of the ill-futed steamer Evening Star, sup
posed to be lost, were two voting men, natives
of this city. On! was named 11. H. Regester,
formerly a conductor on the Second and Third
Streets Passenger Railroad, and the other was
named Martin' F. Hall, who was on his way to
New Orleans for the purpose of establishing
himself iu busiuesj in that city.
Found Drowned. The body of Adolph
Hahn, formerly employed at the Powder Maga
zine, was found drowned at Lcacrue Island, yes
terday. Deceased was lost oh" a boat a few days
ago.
