The benefaction of the Society in cnlculuted for
transient relict', including funeral expenses for
the poor, and is mostly distributed by the Presi
dent and the Committee on tilck, composed of
lour members of the board.
Death of a Prom'nkjjt Member of
ihb I. O. 0. F. William M. Allen, of San Fran
tisco, California, formerly of this city, one of
the Representatives from the Grand Lodge I. O.
O. F. of California to the Grand Iodpe of the
United States, which held its sessions in the
city of Baltimore In (September last, and where
he attended, died In this city on Munday even
ing, of choWa, alter an illness of ODly a few
days. He was formerly a resident of the ixth
Ward, and left for Caliioriiia titteen years since.
He will be bnrird in this city on Thursday, with
Masonic and Odd Vellow honors.
Death of an Old Citizen-. Professor
John 0. Mueller, one of our oldest citizens, died
on the ith instant. He came to America in
1802. In 1S14 he was appointed a teacher and
orpanint in the Onuau Lutheran Congrega
tions of this city. After sixteen years of service
as teacher he resigned the position retaining,
however, his ofliec as onranisr until the day of
his death, having occupied the same far a period
ol filty-two years.
The Jewish Hospital. The new Jewish
Hospital in West Philadelphia is now in full
operation, and, since its opening on the (ith of
August lasr, quite a uutuncr ui rmiiuiii niivu
received the benefits ot the institution. The first
one received was a Hebrew toacher, a bachelor.
who met with an accident by fulling through a
trap-door in a warehouse. He remained m the
Hospital 'our weeks.
The Body of John Williams. The post
mortem examination of the body of John Wil
liams, drowned from a boat off Reed Btreet
wharf last week, did not reveal wounds sufficient
to nave caused death. The inquest on the body
will be iiem lo-aay by coroner Taylor. It will
be remembered that this case was supposed to
have been a mysterious murder. There were
two men in the boat at the time Williams tell
overboard. The other man swam ashore.
Man Shot. Yesterday an affray occurred
at the poll at Wharton and Second streets, which
resulted in the shooting of Timothy Riley In the
head, but not seriously injuring him. It is
alleged that Ktley was driven from the poll, and
upon his returning was taken into custody. At
this time a pistol was discharged, the load from
whicb took enect as stated.
Sale Postponed. The sale of steamers,
which was to take place yesterday at the Navy
Yard, was postponed, because the bids did not
come up to the limitation prices fixed by the
Navy Department, very lew knew ot the sale,
lor the reason that it was not properly adver
tised.
A Man Hangs Himself. Albert Koons,
twenty-three years old, committed suicide yes
terday by hanging himself In a stable in Hope
street, below Master. The Coroner was aunt
Jor to hold an inquest. . i
A Sad Accident. A youug man named
jionneu ten irom ine ttura story or a bouse in
Ninth street, near Locust. He was insensible
when he was picked up, and on further exami
nation, it was found that he had oroken his
spine. He iB now lying in a very critical con
dition.
Jury Trials. As oiBcially announced,
there will be a resumption oi tae jury trials in
the United States Circuit Court to-day. There
will be some interesting cases brought before
the Court during tne present term.
