It . bud two very large French patent locks . 250 One lady's travelling trunk, with cover, containing a quantity of worn dresses, zouave cloth and gold. Druid jacket cloaks, woollen opera clouk, etc. Totul . $21,000 It is very easy to say that u wardrobe like that enumerated in this schedule is extravagant; but the tact is the list scarcely gives a full idea of the extravagance of American toilettes. $21,000 is an immense sum to have invested in clotliiuc; but it must be remembered that the original cost of these articles was much more than $21,000. Many of these dresses, shawls, bonnets, aud other portions of tho young lady s' csstunies had been more or less worn, ami toe prices affixed only represent their values at the time tliey were burned, which is all that the loser has the lieht to recover. For example, "nine pairs ot boots and shoes" would be very cheap at $15; a "dust wrapper rrom uuttimero" couift naroiy no pure uased ior sis; "lour mtiguincent opera clonus" arc valued at $185. when one of them would have cost that sum if new; cloth cloaks at $8, $10, and $12, must have .been much used to be worth only that amount of mouev. No lashioi:able milli ner could sell "four bonnets, some exceedingly elegant," for $400, but would churee as much tor one elegant bonnet, it is evident, then, that to get at the real cost ol the wardrobe of a young lady of lasuion in this metropolis, we must add several thousand dollars to the amount claimed. The articles when first pur chased must have cost at least $30,000. We lean, from this schedule that to make a figure in the fashionable world a young lady requites twenty-six robes of silk and satin, two of velvet, twenty-four dresses of poplin, cash mere, grenadine, and Swiss and India muslin, with undeokirts and bodies of silk; nine jackets to wear over these dresses in the house; seven teen cloaks, mantillas, and capes lor out-door wear; htteeu muslin skirts, besides the under skirts already enumerated; twenty-one ets of flounces and canes of lace, of all qualities, from Houiton to Maltese; aud, in addition to all these, u quantity of woru dresses, cloaks, aud iuckets too numerous to mention. We must take into consideration, moreover, the fact thai the lady was piobubly not deprived ot all her clothmu by the tire. The schedule shows what she lost; but we have no means of uxconaininir what ehe saved.. Yet it is only by getting at this own unknown quantity that we shall be able to realize the lull extent of the young lady's requirements. At present we really lcei that tne list we publish does her some iniustice. Twenty-six silk robes and twenty-four other dresses would not t-atisfy any but the most reasonable aud economical Flora McFlimsey. Ihere are nouses in the Filth avenue tbut could reveul much more ex tensive wardrobes. The jewels and jewelry, too, which cost more heavily than dresses, us many a husband and father knows, are not set down iu this list, which must consequently be pronounced inadequate. S'ill it will serve to convey to the uninitiated and to posterity some conception of the expenses of American lash lonuble lite. SPECIAL NOTICES.
