THE TEA CHIN CS OF THE PULPIT.
7o the JSMtor o Tht Evening Ttitgraphi
The repect In which the Ministers of the Gos
pel are nekl is not a wuit lew than Itourtnito
be. They hold hifcb commlesions, their calling
ie not only honorable, but ii necessarily con
nected with the most lmjortant interests of
Iheir lcllow-meD.
The clergjmeu hold a po'itlon allowed to no
other prominent leaders of public opluion.
They addresa their hearers with no fear of an
swers being lorced unexpectedly upon them;
claiming biK& prerogatives of making exfhmve
addresses ou the Biioject-matter beiore them,
they make assertions, and lay down arguments
without lear of contradiction at the time beinii.
When a minister is preaching the qotpc when
be is proclaiming the mewimed ot peace and
ftulvation from (iod to man, no one denies or
would attempt to controvert the assertion
wade or the argument hdJuccd. It Is pecu
liarly the province ot (Sod's chosen srvauts to
instruct their lellow-tnen on these subjects, and
no interference Is to be expected from others.
When, however, a mlnihter of the (opcl stops
aide Irom the objects o( hi? commission; when
he uses the advantages of his position to argue
other matter.-", and to make assertions on sub
jects foreign trora his work, he is deserving of
censure, and should bo answered and rebuked
In a manner as public as that in which his
assertions have been ma3e. Ou yesterday
alter noon the Reverend John Chambeis
preached what he would call a (jospel sermon,
lie lajs claim to superior excellence in the par
ticular of not preaching politics, and yet an
unbiassed person hearing him on yesterday
would unhesitatingly admit that the claims ot
the (lOBtcl held but little epaoe In his remark.
He claimed to take exception to tho blas
phemy of certain political addresses recently
made. That he should do so is to be expeced
irom hi9 position; he would be recreant in his
duty as a preacher of godliness it he rebuked
not profanity. With his texts, and his imuw
diate comments thereon, we find no taulc, but
us he proerescd bis spleen and anger wavsd
warm, and men were abused and vibiied for uoi,
paying recpect where no tespect wa due.
Mr. Chambers has claimed that he has a right
to his opinion, aud that be has a righc to act in
accordance thereto. No one denies his right,
but wby cannot he accord the same privilege to
others.? It men are of opinion that the Presi
dent ol the United States hits thrown aside the
dignity ot bis position, and condescended to
make a mere partisan mid political cam paitrninc
tour, and In consequence of th"lr holding this
opinion they refuse to exteud to this personage
honors due the office, but not the man who
ikjratii$ ii, what light ha Mi. Chambers or any
other preacher to take holy time uDd sacred
place to abute them for this opinion, and lor
tins action ?
His slur on the memory of thp martyred Lin
coln, when he proclaimed that Mr. Jouiihoii
was not a sfdiona' President, but tho President
of the whole Union, was net in keeping with
his nemuuds tli:it men should not i-peak evil of
dirmtanes. Almc of a man who died doing
his duty is ten lime wore than not exten ling
hoi-pitnlities to mm who lives but to degrade
bis olliec and rculect his duty. We hold that
the Conirress of the United Stn'e has a claim
to l.e ranked im one of the 'Militaries ol the
laud," hiit Mr. Chambers spoke only ot the dis
honor to the successor ot Washington, he not
vhobirig to reicr to the abuse and evil speaking
wh'ch tirU suceeupor of Wiishinaton (?) has
thrown at the co-ortiiunte and superior branch
o! the Govern incnt.
Ve appeal to 3fr. Chambers to leave politics,
and political harantriif s and preach the opel
according to tlio terms of his commission, other
wine there is danaer not, only to the republic but
to himself and to the Church of Uod.
