THE FIRE.
A rry of firf ! a noise In the (street !
Tlif distant clamor ot running mt'D,
And nearer the tread of a hundred fret,
And louder the r'.mr of that cry acain,
While 1 hear of my heart the startled beat.
The awful stroke of the tower bell,
One, two, three, then a tremulous pause
From the hrcnien's throats a chorused yeil,
A the tound of a mvitt and eavane applause.
And the steamer shrinks by like a Hendlrom hell.
In its trnck prows a living lenpcth of fire.
The breath Irom Us lungs lilts a light in. the
air;
Now what may withstand Us terrible ire f
There's death lor the mortal who so shall
dare
Hear it iianr, like a beast, In Its fierce desire.
In the southern Bky a lurid glow,
And a cloud of smoke, like a demon's whig,
limit's over t?i9 civ, long and low;
But the cross ot Christ, that blessed thlnr,
Shows clearer athwart the glare, I know.
Well, let It bum, what loss comes to uie r
Some desperate niati with tremblinic hand,
Who trom worldly ruin to worse would lice,
It may he has Huna; the faial brand
And ho smiles a smile that is sad to see.
As the flames leap up then wretched and wau,
Huirs his Policy cfoe to his perjured heart,
And "knows not how the fire bcan;"
Or, some purse-pioud saint and bis factory
part,
And this is the end of one golden plan.
Enotipb. to the rescue already have gone
Tin s said I. and closed mine eye to dream,
But through my dream that red light shone,
Anl 1 woke tit last with a sudden scream,
For 1 heard full well beb dyiup: groan.
O pity me, God, from Thy mercy-seat;
If my sorrow is sin. thy par Ion I crave
They saw her not as she leaped to the street,
And, alas ! tor the lack of an arm to save,
Tbe one that I loved fell dead at their feet.
A STORY OF WONDERFUL DISCOVERIES.
Three Hundred and Sixty Buried Cities Gold Coins
Four Pounds in Weight Old Tea-Bricks.
' An English, civil engineer, named Johnson,
lately enpaired in the trigonometrical survey of
Cashmere, has made a curious report of what
he saw aud heard in Chinese Turkestan a part
ot the world long inaccessible to Kuropouns. He
says that while measuring and triangulating,
last year, at a remote station on the borders of
Cashmere, he received an invitation to viit the
new ruler of Khotan, who had expriled the
Chinese from his province, declared his inde
pendence, and determined to enter into friendly
relations with the nearest British otiiser within
reach. The adventurous Johnson being the
handiest, the Khan fortnwith requested his
firesence at the capital, llchi. The way thither
ay across the Kinn-Lnn chain of mountains, by
a ditlicult pas at an elevation of nineteen thou
sand feet three miles and a halt. H was a hard
journey, but the indefatigable Johnson' pushed
on, saw the Khan, stayed with him for lour
days, heard some very wonderful stories, and
then made his way back by the Himalayan
Eas-seflreoisting the Khotunesc inclination to
old him as a hostaee tor tbe opening of com
'inerciai relations with England.
It is said that although German travellers
have previously crosed the high mountains
which hem in Khoran, no European has ever
before entered llchi, the capital. The Knan is
described as the natural kiug of men of the Car
lylese pattern, eichty years old, six feet high,
stout, ot a lair complexion, and altogether a
goodly specimen of the old Turkish gentleman,
such as he was in the days befote Ottomans
were heard of. Ho rules a province of two hun
dred and fifty thousand inhabitants, whereof hid
capital contains lorty thousand: fine strong men,
and short but pretty women, lair and cleanly in
apparel, and dressing well, all Turks ana Mo
hammedans, great eaters of meat and drinkers
ot tea, all carrying on a considerable trade in
the face of great difficulties, aud most anxious
to trade with the English in particular. The
country, well watered by moderate showers, and
irrigated lrom the rivers which flow northwards
from the Kiun-Lun, is fertile and productive
enough to stand a favorable comparison with
Cashmere itself, but its climate Is described as
being much superior, both dry and equable.
Tb.1' reports brought back by Mr. Johnson are
somewhat Munchaiiseni-ih. For instance:
1. The terti'ity ot the country is increased by
a fine impalpable dust or mould which is wafted
In from the adjacent deeerts. "without wind, in
perfect calm, and nil" the air so as to darken
it." This pnenomenon occurred during Mr.
Johnson's visit, and he was then unable to read
mint at noon without a candle. It is not
explained how the dust is blown without a
wind, but Mr. Johnson says it is "wafied in a
cului," and he cannot be contradicted.
2. The storms in the desert raise waves of
f and, which settle into hills three hundred to
four hundred teet high. Why not one thousand
leet ?
3. The tradition of the country is that three
hundred and sixty cities were overwhelmed in
one day by sand-storms. The sites ot these
cities are partially known; so there is avast
array of Pompeiis aud Niuevehs awaiting some
body's pickaxe, shovel, and archieological ski'.l.
4. The people of these buried towns used gold
coins weiehing four pounds each but ''this is
kept a profound secret by those who know the
position." There is no relic of the Brobdiena
giun purses in which this money was . carried
a bout for every day use.
6. "The store ot tea used for the actual con
sumption of the people is now dug out of one of
these ruined cities," and Mr. Johnson brought a
brick of this tea away with him. "The Chinese
supply is now cut off," so the Ilchians cut oil
their supply Irom these bricks.
We are further informed that the country in
which these wonderful things happened is highly
auriterous a lemark which is perhaps unneces
sary w hen we remember the four-pound gold
' coins which seem to have been the circulating
medium.
Mr. Johnson's report is about to be published
in London. An appropriate vignette would be
a drawing of a long bow.
