A BOILER EXPLOSION AT ALBANY.
Ten or Twelve Persons Killed and
Several Injured.
Ktc, Ktc, Ktc., Ktc, Etc., Etc.
t' Frightful Boiler Explosion.
A lb amy, September 12. A terrible boiler ex
plosion occurred to-day in the saw and planing
mill of St. George Bock, at the corner of Law
rence and Water Btreets. Ten or twelve per
sons were killed, and ten others seriously
wounded. No cause can be a?8Uned, the engi
neer being killed. TLo establishment covered
an acre of ground, and it is said the loss will
be about $20,000. The following is a list of
those killed:
John Cullen, engineer, aged forty year, leaves
a wife and five children. His body was blown
to pieces, which, were gathered up in a box.
John Hoffman, aged twenty-two, unmarried,
employed in feeding the planing machine.
John Kirk, a cousin of the mill owners, aged
twenty-five, leaves a widowed mother. James
O'Keill, aged sixteen, was a carman, and was
driving in front of the engine-house. He buried
his mother a few days since. John Femmore,
fireman, aged thirty-eight, married, leaves oven
children. Cornelius Blye, a GermaD, aged forty.
It is believed three or four bodies were blown
into the river. The calamity spreads mourning
over the city. The streets near the mill were
filled with spectators, many of them inquiring
after their friends. It is possible that one or
more bodies may be tindpr the ruins.
Hew York Democratic State Convention.
Albany. September 12. The platform adopted
reaffirms the principles of the Philadelphia Con
tention of August 14; regards the Southern
States as fully restored to the Union, and the
people entitled to all the rights and privileges of
citizenship; affirms that the centralization of
power in this State, no less than in the Union,
is fatal to the harmony of our political system,
and dangerous to the liberty of the citizen; and
assails the recent legislation at Albany and
and Washington as UDprecedentcd in extrava.
gant eipenditure.
John T. Hoffman, of New York, was nomi
nated for Governor by acclamation, and Robert
H. PruyD, of Albany, for Lietitenant-Governor.

SECOND NATIONAL CATHOLIC COUNCIL,
Arrival of Archbishops and Bishops in New York
Importance of the Deliberations of the Council,
Etc. Etc
The second National Council of the Catholic
Church of the United States, to be held in Balti
more on the Brut Bnnday in October, and which
is to terminate on the third Sunlay of the same
month, will probably prove a prand religious
pageant. All the archbishops ot male religious
orara, the superintendents of Heminarieu, in
fact! the entire Catholic clergy, have been in
vited to attend, and the invitation seems to
have been generally accepted. The Most Kev.
Dr. Spauldmg, Archbishop of Baltimore, has
beeB delegated by the Pope to preside over the
deliberations of tbe council.
Among the distinguished clergymen now In
this city from the Pacific coast are the Arch
bishop ol San Francis, the Most Kev. Dr. Ale
many ; Most Rev. Dr. Blanchet, ot Oregon City;
his brother, Right Rev. Blanchet, of Nesquully;
Right Kev. Dr. Deniers, from Vancouver's
Island: RiehtRcv. Dr. Amet, of Los Angeles,
Right Rev. Dr. O'Connell, of Marysvillo, and
others. Many of these gentlemen arrived on
Saturday last; some, however, came by a differ
ent route, and did not reach this city until Sun
day. Four of the bishops since their arrival
have asiiiBtPd at high mass at St. Peter's church.
It is understood that several of these prelatea
have gone to Montreal, with a view ot securing
the co-operation of members of Catholic orders
lor the edueation of the youth in tbe several
dioceses now not represented by qualined
teachers ot the Catholic faith.
Ttie importance ot the Convention about to
assemble at Baltimore niay be determined by
the tact that there will be forty-one prelates, at
leant one hundred priests, and a gTeat number
of supervisors of orders present.
The first National Council was held at Balti
more in 1853. and its decrees, after havin been
approved by the Pope, were published, and
their provisions have siuce been obxprved in the
discipline of the Catholic Church. It is thought
the present Council will exercise a much greater
influence than the one preceding it, owing to
the great increase of Bishops and reliiou3
writers of the Church. The direct object of thin
imnortant assemblage of Catholic clcravnien la
lor tbe purposo of regulating the disciphm of
the Unurcn; aiu ior a mure Bynwuiuiii; imn lor
-thfl pdncation ol Catholic youth.
' It is generally understood that th( Convention
will advise the endowment ot several colleues
and seminaries, and that the education of priests
will be a prominent topic of discusslou. It is
also understood that new Episcopal sees will be
MtuhllHhed and bishops appointed to fl:l tuera.
All nominations will, of co'iwe, bo referred to
Tjnm for continuation, this being obligatory on
all Cutholie Councils, ka estimate of the im
portance of thf Council may be derived from the
Ew.t th.it the leadintr minds of the priesthood ot
v. r-oth.iin Church from all parts of tho United
btates will be assembled, aud the interests of
the Catholic unurcn inroufiuuui uic cume
country will bo represented. The dcleuates who
rirt in this citv have generally been
entertained by the Iriends of the several orders
to which they belonir, and tbrlr reception has
ot only been cordiul but enthusiastic. A. z.
