A CAUD.
Philadelphia, September 5, 13"fl.
To Qte Textile Manufacturers and oihar Manu
facturers of 2hitade.'pMa and neighboring
Vovnties:
Gentlemen: For many years past the pre
miums paid lor insurance on your property have
been barely eutlicicnt to meet losses and ex-
pontes, and slnco the commencement ol this
year the mill fires have been so numerous and
extensive as to render the business most disas
trous to all offices underwriting these risks; and
have rendered an advance in the rate of insu
rance absolutely necessnry.
In view of these tacts we venture npjn a few
recommendations, by strict attention to which
you can avoid excessive rates ot' Insurance on
jour property.
First Use none but the best sperm or lard
oils, or for lubricating machinery tho best par
affine oil. To the use oi deleterious compounds
and vegetable- oils, we attribute the greatest
number ol recent tires.
iSecond Do not permit one particle of preasy
waste to remain over ni,i;ht In mill, not even
what is termed clean waste, put aside to bo ued
again. Have it also removed to an outside
buildlnc.
Third-If coal or o'.hrr oil is used for liebtintr
mill, take care that it is kept and lamps tilled
at a safe distance outside of mill buildintr. and
that none but the- best covered lamps are used,
securely fixed on walls.
Fouriti I'ickers of every description must be
in separate building at a sale distance from
the mill, or in buildintr adjoining mill on side
where there are no wlr.dows, and communica
tions protected by solid iron doors.
Fifth Dry houses must be a safe dis
tance from tho mill, and be thoroughly
ventilated. Where patent steam dryers are
used for drying stock, or where tho mill is
endangered by the pioximity of dry houses,
experience shows us that the premises are prac
tically uninsurable.
Finally We roust beg you to exercise tho
preatesl care and watcbluln"ss. Where pos
sible, make it a rule to go ovur mill before
retiring for tho night. See that hogsheads
full of water are placed in convenient posi
tions, and that full buckets are in each room.
Where possible, have steam pipes, with cocks
on the outside, by which steam can be
thrown into picker and dry houses, and take
all other precautions that your experience
has demonstrated to be of value for your secu
rity. Although specially addtessed to gentlemen
engaged In textile manufactures, the concluding
observations apply equally to those engaged in
other industrial pursuits, in many branches of
which (we would instance particularly workers
in wood), our experience hai been latterly ex
tremely unfavorable, the losses having been out
ot all proportion to the premium receipts.
We believe that attention to these recom
mendations will subserve our mutual interests,
and preclude the necessity of an advance in
rates ot insurance to a point whicli will be a
serious tai upon jour industry.

The mother since that has been in very desti

Funeral of Matthias W. Baldwin'.
This morning at hall-past eleven our late fellow
clti.cn, Mattlr.us W. Baldwin, Mas buried from
his. residence, at No. 1118 t'hesniit street. The
funeral obsequies were very imposing, and were
adequate to cypres the public grief. Many of
our oldest and most influential citi.ens attended
his remains to their last restinic-place, ud his
workmen turned out en masse to pay the last
tribute ot respect to their lamented employer.
The procession, composed of about seven hun
dred men, mostly employes in Mr. Baldwin's
factory, were led bv twentv-tive foremen of the
locomotive workshops, followed by citizens,
friends of the deceased, and workmen. The
pal' bearers were Judge Strong, R. Cornelius,

C. Strawbridtre. The procession moved up
Chesnut street to Fifteenth, up Fifteenth to
Hamilton, around into Broad street, and lrom

Sitbpicion of Lauceny. I'lip. attention

Rititori arrived in this city ytsteiday by the
l'vretre, l'rotn Rret-t,
Much public curiosity has naturally .been. ex
cited in view of the promised advent anions tin
ot ho oistinpruisbed' a lady. Madame Risiori
socially known in Italy a? tlie Marchioness
Cairtiiica del Grillo, btit'better Known bv lier
tamiliar dramatic name, which ia recosai'.ed in
eveiy civilized country, is unquestionably the
greatest ot living dramatis celebrities,. Iliat tier
iirrivul here should fieat.' great public mterunt
is not surpri?iiir. Thoiisanda of our cutzc-na
who have vihited Europe have learned to ai
niiip her peniii0. Ycsterdav the teclin existing
anions our citizeus f'ouud some expression in
tbe throne that collected uoou the wharf t
gieet null welcome the creat actress.
On the arrival ot tne JJereire. the crowd testi
fied its jLtcrect in the occasion by wattiutr nn
hour or nunc to fee Kistori emer her earn ape.
The lady appeared, escorted by Mr. (Jrau, and
followed' by her family her htiRbind, the
Marquis del rtrill". Sipnorina Rlanca del Urillo,
tJiort'io- del Grillo, Shjnor Luiel, Trojatu,
Madame Ristori's secretary, and their servauts.
Her dramatic company, composintr morn th;m
thirty atti.-ts. were also present, and attracted a
share of public attention.
The I'ereire had a rather rouph pasaee, but
the latter part of the voyage was deliplitiul. As
the vessel steamed up tho harbor, and the citr
began to open upon her view, MadHine Rision
expressed ihe preafest enthusiasm at the evi
dences of activity and enierpnse wnich rofe
beloro her: but it was not until the creat struc
tures ou Urondway met her i.tht that she fully
relized the commercial preatnes; of our city.
Surprise ai.d delipht moved her to cive e.vprea
Fiou to her feelintrs, aud, tor a bine tune, it was
impossible to quiet her sufficiently for conver
sation. Madame RIMon's manners are very ple.nlarr.
Her pracc, eae, and vivacity lend a charm to
ner conversion that at once enli-ts interest.
Her complexion is rather liphi, and the clow oa
her cheeks is rather that ot pirlish youth than
of the full maturity of womanhood. Her jres
turcj are natural aud graceful, andishe takes a
lively interest in every topic that i presented
to her notice. A stron? individuality riiariv
her, ana, aJthoueh noihine of tho- conventional
actress is seen in her manner, it is not difficult
to ilivin that the emotions and sufrerinpi of
ideal bcirifi ill find in her a thorouph expo
nent. Hi i I'.ves and hair are not 60 dart aa
seems (itniij ro Italian birth, but they are beau
tiful, and well adapted to the requirements ot
the tragic stape.
The fervor of her feeliups may bo noted in, the
drawing-room, aud the spectator is prompted to
natural conjecture as to their intensity In the
arena of artistic liie, Whila In conversation at
the (rifth Avenue Hotel, a basket of the rarest
flowers, upon which waa seen, in red floral let
ters, the words, "Welcome Ri.-tori," was brought
to her. Thio tribute "excited her sensibilities
beyond description, and site said that iu all her
experiences this unexpected kindness, at the
moment of her arrival in a stranpe land, was
one ot the most atlectinp Incidenls.and shehoped
that it presatred success in this country.
Madame Ristori did not have the good for-,
tunc, last evening-, to obtain her trunks from
tr ollicers of the custom-house; but every pos
sible facility was extended io her. The auionut
of bappaae on board the Ptreir ctiuiprlses 105
boxes or trunks, and about 41) of these contain
the wardiobes of ihe various plays in which
she will appear. They are to be delivered thH
niornine. Meanwhile, nothiup will fx omitted
