Tub Opera Hot sr. Carncross & Dixey's Min
strels are aa funnj as ever. The perlormances
at the Eleventh Street Opera House are varied
aud attractive. Take the whole lamily and
laugh oil the "hi nee." Several local novelties
are in preparation.
Valhr'h Winter Garden. This cool anil do
I'dhllul phice of amusement is drawing like a
locomotive. The rrani instrumental concerts
aiven nfchtly by the efficient orchestra, are
appreciated bv all ladies and gentlemen o
refined taste. 'A visit to the Winter Garden is
certain to give entire saiiatuction.
A Gimnd Frke Art Kxiijiution. This
is an age of enterprise, speculative and srisrantic.
The business world teems witn euorniOHS nnd
lucrative investments. The whole financial
economy is more or lees permeated with specu
lation, and it seems to be the climacteric of
human cllorts to send mfuicy circulating
through the community with the whirlmtf
impetuosity of a towerincr ocean billow. Con
spicuous noioupr the enterprises ot the pre.cut
day is that ot the "Crosby Opera House Art
Association." The prime mover in tins
monster speculation is Mr. U. II. Crosby,
a wealthy and influential citizen of
Chicago. "Mr. Crosby tniilt, some time a;io,
a lare and beautiliil place ot amusement,
known astue "Crosby Opera House." He became
desirous ol disjios.nii ol it, lor various.valid busi
ness reasons, and knowms the gre.it worth of
the property, and wishing to be compensated
for paitiug witn it, he institiitcd a gut enter
prise which, for its enormity und security, is
unparalleled bv anything ot ine kind ever belore
attempted. To give the taiug exteDsive popu
luritv, he added to the list ot his prizes some of
the most noted and elegant puiuiiiips that have
ever been pioduced by American artists, aud
which have already aUaiued a reputation
tbjouchont the whole country and in Kurope,
for their superior Uoisb and oricinality of treat
ment. This is a consideration of universal in
terest in the world of art, aud has secured an
unexampled popularity tor the Association.
There is a large number of these pcureson
exhibition at li. hcoit's Auction Kooms, on
Chesnut street, between Tenth and Eleventh
street.southside. Partisularly uo'iceable among
those on exibtiiou, there is one by Halt,
called Woods m Autumn, which challenges tne
rapturous admiration ol every true lover of art,
for tbe attractiveness ot its design and the mag
nificence of its tinih. It is a subiect which
speaks hi. me to every one alive to the beauties
ot nature, aud the artist has neither sunk
below it or garnished it with superfluous bril
liancy in the manipulation. The, rich and gor
geous colors of veuetation are relieved here and
there by sombre evergreen, tbe Hirht a id
shadow of the woods, and ciiaracteri.itio nazi
ness ot the aimosphcre. This gem is valued at
five thousand dollars. There are a ereat many
other pictures in tne gallery possessing as cove
table attiioutes as tin one, which our space
will not aomit cf our noticing to any great ex
tent. Suffice it to say that, among the worts
ot art which are ottered as pr.zes by ihe Asso
ciation, is bierstadt's celebrated Yosemtte Val
ley, a picture from nature, Calaveras county,
California, and Constant Meyer's liecognttton.
Such an offertory ot princely prizes has never
belore been made in this or any otner country.
These paintings will lemuin on exhibition at
Mr. Scotr's Art Auction Rooms for a few even
ings jet. Mr. T. B. fugh is the Philadelphia
agent.
Joe Jefferson. This eminent American
comedian made his Hist appearance in Nev
York, at the Olympic Theatre, on Monday night,
as "Rip Van Wlnkie." The house wat jiackud
