A Watch Lifteh. Morris Harris was arrested on the charge of pocket-picking on one ot the Walnut and Chesuut streets cars. Uoorge Thomas, ot (iermantown, testified that he wasa passenger on one of the Walnut street cars, and saw the defendant with one ol his arms across his breast, aud the other hand raised with money in it. Witness missed his watcd, and pave tho alarm, whereupon the accused ran, and was overtaken at Eighth street. As witness was walking down Walnut street alter the prisoner, the watch was slipped into his coat pocket. Hiram W. Porter, of Connecticut, testified thft he was on the same car, aud that his watch was stolen at about JFii'tU and Walnut streets. There was a crowd about him at the time, and he believed the defendant, Hams, was one ot them, but he would not swear to it. Reserve officer Crout testified that in April last be arrested defendant in Robinson's picture store during an auction sale of pictures, on the allegation that he had picked a pocket. At that time Harris pave bail for a further hearing, but did not make his appearance at the time tixed, and sickness was given &b & reason for it. He was at large up to yesterday. Alderman Beitler committed him for ninety days, under the professional thieves' law, anil held him to answer the theft of a watch. Fitting Oct a Boarding-House. John and Susan Williams hid a hearing on the charge of larceny. Arthur Thatcher, of the firm of Recder & Thatcher, testified that tho defendants came into the store on Fourth street, and repre sented that the female was a boarding-house keeper and wanted to buy some knives. Borne dessert knives were shown them, and while they were examining them the woman leaned over the counter in u way to conceal the man. This excited the suspicion ot Mr. Thatcher, and he looked more closely and discovered the man slipping a package of fine cutlery in his pocket. This was followed by an intimation that the party had come to steal, whereat the man be came indignant and broke away from Mr. Thatcher when he proposed to search him. and ran from tlio store; the cry "Stop thief!" was raised and the fellow was pursued. John S. Parker testified that he heard the cry and saw the pursuit, aud saw defendant go to the sewer, and was in the act of thro wing some thing in it, when witness caught hold of his arm. The package he had in his hand was dropped into the sewer. Defendants were committed tor trial by Alderman Beitler. The stolen package was worth about thirty dollars.
