The Philadelphia Pr achers' Association have

larcer attendance ot children at public worship,

The Old School Presbyterian General Assem
' lily's Committee on Frecdmen enter upon th
. work of the year with bitv-seven missionaries
- In the held and $3000 in the treasury. There
were in 1800 fourteen thousand colored members
in the communion of the Old Presbyterian
- Church, mostly in the slaveholding; States, and
it is the desire of large numbers ot these mem
bers to retain their connection wlih the General
Assembly.
.' At a recent meeting of the American Bible
Society, ten new auxiliaries were recognized
one in each of the States of Connecticut, Penn-
sylvania, Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, Ala
' bama, t.'coreia, and three in Iowa. Grants of
books were ma to amounting to 1G.278 volumes.

a professional thief. Alderman The best evi
dence in the world you were in the company
of a known thief. Robert Davis, arrested on
one ol the Walnut street cars, was committed
on the professional thieves' law.
fc.Two young men, who cave the names of
ileiiry Smith and James Watson, and a lad who
called himpelt J. Railings, were heard at tbe
Central Station. Detective Lamon testified that
he and Oliieer Tryon arrested the defendants on
a step at Eighth etieet and .irard avenue. He
tboughc there was something not right about
them. While they were coining down in a pas
senger car, Watson took a pocket book out of
his pocket and put it back of him on the seat.
The officer handed the book to the Alderman.
It contained a small sum or money.
Officer Tryon, in addition to testifying to the
nrrest, f aid tbat he had seen Smith before, and
that he had the reputation ot being a profes
sional thief, bis alias being Skinner. Both
Smith and Watson said that they belong to New
York: all the defendants previously heard are
troin New York but Burns. Smith, Watson, and
Kalliigs were committed tor a further hearing.
Inquest in the Kinglrb Gomicide.
The Coroner held an inquest yesterday ai tor
noon on the causes ot the death of Daniel
Kinder, who died on Monday last from the sup
posed effects of a kick received in a scuttle. The
. following is the evidence elicited. Deceased
was sitting on tbe steps ot No. 809 St. John
street, when Gilbert Weitman came up and
spoke to him; be then turned his attention to
tbe daughters of Riugler, who were standing
close by, and said he wanted one of them for a
wile, ttingter, in iepiy, suta, "ion are a mar
n
ned man."
Yes," replied Weitman, "but I can throw
my wile down stairs and Dreat ner nect; and
wul make your daughter a second wile.1"
lUngler told him inat he ought not to talk
that way, and said: '-Do you mean to insult
Some reply was made to this, which caused
Rinsler to get up trom the steo. and h and
' Weitman had a scuffle. Mrs. Riugler caught
hold of her husband to pull him away, and be
leil down, with Weitman ou top ot him. Before
he fell Weitman was seen by oue witness to
kick him in the stomach; the other witness did
lot observe the kick. Weitman pressed with
bis knees on the stomach ot Ringler, producing
hernia, which resulted in iutiummutiou of the
bowels and caused death. This was testified to
. by Dr.Shaplelgh.
Dr. William A. Piper, who had attended
Rintrler, testitied that he was called in on Sun
day, and that the pitlent died ou the iollowing
Oay: ha had been previously m un enfeebled
stajte.
The jury rendered a verdict that Dunlel
. Ringler came to ins death i inluries received
in a scuttle with Gilbert Weitman, ou Sunday,
Angust 12.
A New Truck Ordered. The Empire
Ilook and Ladder Company, of Lancaster, are
bavin? a new truck built iu this city. It will
be one of the tluest ever built. The iron-wors
is to be f llver-pluted, and to be furnished with
elpbt globe lights. Tbe truck will bo painted
blue with polo.
Shout Firi:. A flre broke out last even
ing in the fourth story of William B. John's
broom factory. No. 24(1 North Delaware avenue.
It originated in the bleachey, and was extin
juifcued before it had done much damage.
Fatal Result. Owen Mover, who waa
Ir.iurrd in a coal pit at Mount Pleasant, a few
. weeks ago, died yesterday at tue Hospital.
An Improvement. Carncrosa A Dixey's
Opera House, in bleventh street, above Chtsnut,
hs been greatly Improved since its close, a few
vtrki since. The exterior has been entirely
cujneed, by rsiriLK the Iront and placing around
the top a heavy cornice. Tbe walls have been
covered with a costing or dark blue plaster,
and the front beaut I Bed with modern windows,
a neat balcony, tew doors, and wide marble
steps.
A wide veftibnle fronts the main entrance In
which tbe ticket office bas been plsced. From
this vestibule entrance is hud to the auditorium
and also to the gallery by two wide stairways.
The audience chamber ha been entirely retltted,
atd the walls frescoed. New seats covered with
green rep, with sola backs, have replaced the
old ones, which have been transferred to the
Callfrv. The rIoctp lit. hern remodelled, find
lurnifbed with lootliaht sunk below the surface.
A new and beautiful nroHcenlum has also
been put up. It has heavy columns and two
large heures in niches, and presents a Very
handsome appearance. The drop curtain, a-
well as most ot tbe scenery, will be entirely
new. Tbe alterations to the 6tage will permit
the managcis to present pieces requiring intri
cate machinery. Tbe imurovemcnts throuehout
ore extensive and substantial, and will add much
to the comlort of viMtors to this popular place
oi amusement
Political Meeting. Last night the
Johnson-Clvmer Central Club met ht National
Guards' Hall. There was a large audience
present.
Hon. Lewis D. Cawpbcll was introduced,
and made the first speech. He said that this is
a new era iu politics, and the old Is - ires are
done awav with. AU the old issues the Wil
mot proviso. Slavery and the tugitive slave laiv,
the currency and internal improvement, tariff,
etc. aie done away with. Let the dead bury
the dead. He did not wish to disetisthonew
questions of the day, which would be acted on
by the Convention.
He referred in feeling terms to the late war,
and concluded by booing that the Convention
would adopt measure to Insure perpetual har
mony and union.
Major Rollins, of Missouri, spoke in eulogistic
terms of the Convention, deprecated the late
Rebellion, and hoped that no war measures
would be now held up by factious parties. He
(aid that a great majority ot the returned war
worn and wounded heroes were with him in
wit-hlng for harmony aud union between the
North and Soutb.
