NC11DKR8,
The numerical strength of the Chinese in
Victoria may be stated at one-fourth of the total
miuiug population. Tbe'r immigration into the
colony commenced in 1860, and by the following
year about two thousand had settled there.
This number, during tho next three years,
increased to thirty thousand; in 185s thuir
numbers throughout the year areraged thirtv
flve ti ouand; in 185!, fortv-two thousand; and
in 18CU they again lell to thlrty-tlve thousand;
but the several attractions of Lambing Flat and
Burrandoug, m New South Wales, drew away
ten or eleven thousand during this and the
following years, leaving the population through
out the paht three years, in round numbers, at
twenty-lour thousand.
PHYSICAL CAPACITY.
The physical capacity of the Chinese in general
correspond with their interior stature, ihouga
upon the gold-tields a number ot sinewy, Dion I
shouldered individuals are to be met with who
appear to be equal to any amount of fatigue.
With a stout bamboo pole slung across tha
shoulder, and occasionally shitted with a kind
of "hitch" round the back of the neck, they will
sustain the whole burden of their mining imple
ments and camp appendaees. Cradle, buckets,
shovels, ropes, and tent baggage, on the one
side, win oe oaianceu oy a puauuug tuD or

THE WOMEN.
Several of the more wealthy Chinese have

the most ellectual step towards relieving
themselves of tbe rocial ban under which

and it is even doubttui whether the odd speci

(.'hnec ladies Into Victoria, however, has
becotr.c an accomplished fact; an importation

recently taken place.
There is little doubt but that, as tbe gold
fields at pre-eut available to them are gradually
narrowed by the superior energy of the Euro

by leasinu comr antes, they ib lorm an import
