IhP Jury unmmoncii by Coroner Taylor t investigate Into the causa of the explosion ol the etciim boilr at the Yewdall mills. In llestonville, West Philadelphia, ren dered the following verdict last evening: 1st. Plan ot boiler. Rood, providing the same was mtide of flood iron, and ot proper thickness in proportion to size ol Paid boiler. 3d. The iron of paid boiler proves to be of good quality. 3d. On examination of thickness of the iron lined in the construction of taid boiler, the shells prove to be only scant quarter inch Iron; In our opinion it should have been vp-sitcnnhs in thickness; the beads and tube sheets prove to be oiilj three eiphihs of an h-ch in thickness, and should have been at least half an inch in thickness. 1 4. It appears lrom the evidence produced before jour jury that this boiler had little or no attention paid to it, us regards cleaning or removing the ecale deposit, except twice dur ing the ear, at which time it was merely opened and scraped out, and never while in operation was the blow-olf ceck used to free the boiler ot mud or loose deposit. 6. The immediate cause of said explosion, from evidence produced, and observation by jour Jury, is as follows:-Said boiler ha 1 been overworked, and that with heavy pressure. On stopping the engine at VI o'clock without draw ing the tire, the pressure in the boiler was neces sarily ii.creased in this cae with more than usual rapidity lrom the low store of water. The btrenuth of the iron was much lessened lor the same reason (ovcrheatine), and the explosion took place trom these causes, or perhaps by the injection of water lrom the donkey-pump (turned on alter the engine was stopped) on the overheated Iron. 6. From the evidence produced, the boiler was very hot sj much so, that mnny of the tubes were heated to a red heat; and this Is clearly pioven lrom the (act that the scale on the boiler was thorotiplily charred, even so much so that it became perfectly black, as though burnt in a lire. 7. In the estimation of your Jury we cannot but censure the managers of said mill for here tofore employing incompetent hands to take charge ot their eueine and boiler, as was cleiirly proven in the evidence; that at different times they have employed ditl'ereut men entirely in competent, as was proven on examination of one man, who admitted his incompetency before this jury, and stated that he had full cuaree from tour to 9even dnyt at one lime, durinc the absence of the regular engineer. In conclusion, we hereby submit the following as our verdict: This 1ury find that the said Kobert Hamilton, Catharine Carney, and Aunie Jiven came to their death by an explosion of a steam boiler at Yewdull's nulls in llestonville, on the 26th day of July, 1806 said explosion having been caused (as the i ury are fully satis fled trom the evidence, as well as from a thorough examination) by gross carelessness in the management of said boiler by incompetent hand", by ovcrheatine, causing low water aud high pressure of steam. Last evening ex-Alderman James T. Harmer, whose residence is in FittU street, below Federal, was shot, and almo"t instantly killed, at Peck's tavern, corner of Passyunk road and Federal street. The shootins origi nated in a political brawl, and was done by Jacob Bustiau, a resident of the lower sect'on ot the city. Harmer, it stems, drove iu a hack to Peck's tavevn.in company with several others and llastian. George P. Finney, and one or to others, were siding in the, bar-rom. As soon as Harmer entered he began a discussion with Finney on politics, they belonging to different panics. The he was passed, and deceased threatened violence to Finney. While this dis pute was going on the parties got outside, und ilsrmer, incensed at something said by Fiunev, struck him in the face and knocked him down, he falling over a chair in the tbotway. Biiatian, who was the friend of Finney, ran to his assist ance, and he and Harmer had a quarrel. Tbe ex-Alderman ran Bastian into the bar-romu, and then commenced to throw glasses at him. Bastian then took retuore benind the bar, and the attark was continued by Harmer. The last thing thrown was a large dish, which the friends of Bastian say barely escaped his head. At this point Bastian pieked up an old musket behind the eating bar, belonging to Mr. Peck, and raising it, told Harmer to keep back. Seeing that Harmer was about to throw some thina else, the musket was discharge I. Harmer turned at that moment, and the load entered his lelt breast; he then staggered to the door and tell on the step, and died lu a few minutes. As toon as Bastian saw that theload had taken effect, he left the home by the back door, and hurrying up to the Central Station, asked for the Chief of Police as soon as he reached it, aud gave himself up to the officer in charge. He thei, though cautioned aeaiust saying anything to implicate himself, stated that he had shot Harmer, and narrated the occurrence substan tially as given above. He stated that the shoot ing was entirely in 8flf-defet.se; that he had every reason to believe, from the violent conduct ot Harmer.thathe would noUtop short of taking his life. Bastian is quite a small man, and Harmer above the ordinary size, weighing above two hundred pounds. Deceased was well known in the southern part of Philadelphia, where he had lived from childhood. He was on the police force under Mayor Vaux, and subsequently was elected Alderman of the Second Ward, which oltice he held lor rive years. At the time of his death he kept a restaurant on Pelaware avenue, near Dock street. Ho was married, and leaves a wife and rive clnl Iren. As soon as rntell-geneeol the killing reached the Coroner, he proceeded to the scene, and made arrangements to hold an inquest ou the body, which will take piac? to-ciay. Several of the persons who witnessed the occurrence, including George P. Finney, were he'd as witnesses, and will be examined betore the Coroner's jury. Bastian is a single man, and resides in Eighth street, below Wharton. The shooting created a goad dpal of excitement iu the lower part of the city, where the ex-Alderman hud a large number ol acquaintances. . Improvements witiiin the City Limits, i Burins the mouth of July there were issued i out of the Buildina Inspectors' office permits for the erection of ;137 buildings, and tor the alteration and extension ot WO, making a total of 467. There, has been very little, if any, decrease in the price of building materials, us was anticipated early in the spring. The be-t pressed brick sell tor $25. The prices of last vear are kept up, and in some materials there has been a slight advance. Notwithstanding eight hundred dwelling have been erected since the opening of spiitig, it is as difficult to obtain a dwelling-house no as at any time in the last twelve mouths. It will be seen, by a comparison between tho Building Inspectors' report ot July, lsti.'), and that of last month, that there wa a eontddera "ble increase in the number of dweliinss for which permits were taken out 112 in Julv. 18C6, and 254 in the month tust pitted.
