THE DAILY EVENLNU TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1800.
Ahicdct or Gewbral Scott. Kind enough
at hrart, and thonjrhtful of his troops when in
iKTvice.ne permitted no undue familiarity on
tke part of his soldiers, and required proper
observance on all occasions of his raok and
osttlon. The regular knew this wpII enontth,
and were not likely to offend him in this reeard.
Ills peculiarities were very little known, bo w
ver, to the volunteers. As he cme out of the
lmildtDff tn which headquarters were at this
lime, an orderly stepped up with, as it appeared
atterwardj.a letter irom one of the bureaus of
the War Department, which he had been
direct !? to deliver io General Scott at onre ot
course to his Adjutunt-Oeneral or Chief of
Staff. The wi?.'"K but " well-learned volun

The astonished Orderly sprang away, and the
General passed to lite carnaae and wa- driven
off. The letter was taken charge of by the
Orderly on duty at the oflice, aud the other
sloilv walked on. The carriage was driven no
nore'tbarj twenty or thlr(v rods before U turned
alout, and the driver called to '.he unfortunate
Oiderly. He, of course, met It with hat In hand
and fear in every quivering muscle. He was
beckoned to the door, and the General asked his
name and regiment as be told two or three of
vs immediately afterward. He gave both, and
the General answered: 'Well, sir, report to
your Colonel that you weie guilty ot gross dis

Equestrian Perils. A siup.ulir accident
bapj,er.d recently to a voiing lady near Brigh
ton, fcnglanl. She was riding on horseback
beMnd the rest ot her comnuiiions, whn a
young man rubed Irom the side of the road
towards her, anl commenced tearing away the
skirt of her riding habit. A gentleman on
horseback, thinking that some Imult wits
offered, rode towards the young lady to give
her bis protection, when he discovered that the
habit was on fire. It was soon extinguished,
but not before the hands of the young man
weremnch burnt, Tbeoriidn of the accident
la not known. It was attributed at the time to
the skirt having caught the hot axhes ot an
ignited cUar fusee, carelessly thrown away; but
the probable conjecture Is that the skirt caught
lire irom a plumber's portable urate, used for
netting lead in the open air, one of which was
on tue route.
Look to Your Corks. Mr. J. J. Weir exhi
bited some larvie at a recent meeting of the En
tomological Society, in Loudon, lound in the
corks of port wine bottles. Considerable damage
had been done, as they ate quite through the
cork and allowed the wine to escape. lie sug
gested that the use of bran instead of sawdust
was the probable cause ot their incursion into
the cellar. Mr. V. W. Sanders iclated an in
stance ol a number of larvte of dertneetes tarda
rivs, which sere brought into the docks with a
cargo of fckins, effecting an entrv into an adjoin
ing warehouse, where they perforated aud ren
dered entirely useless a quantity of manuluc
I ured cork.
A Forcible Description. A writer iu the
London btar, describing a descent into an Eng
lish coal mine, employe this striking figure:
"Down we went into deep darkness, with tearful
and increasing velocity. Down, down, and no
thing to be seen, only the dropping ot the water
from the sides ot the shait to be heard, aud a
feeling expeiienced as if flesh and bones were
descending, while sensation lingered behind to
tingle the finger ends and the roots of the
hair."
