THE DAILY EVENING TKLfifi 1 AMt. PDILa ELrillA, TUESDAY, JUNE 12, i860. BRITISH INVASIONOF VERMONT. Th Hrltiah Troop Aerons tbn Lias Utrat or Colonel I,llMKtoa, 1'nltvd Stota Army, on tb Mubjcxit An American Woman Root by Ui , Brittafc Tbo Foiilnii Prlnonort at St. John's Mallratd, Kle. St. Albans, Judo 11. Ttie awoin stareraenfg of George VV. Whttp. of North Cambridge, and Bernard Manning, of ftommervillc, Mass., to Ihe eflect that the British crossed the line and cap tured Fenian stragglers, are corroboratod. Hart 8 statement that one man was killed on this side of the line noeda condrination. The whole number of Fenians caiturcd was sevcntcei, Ave of whom were of Captain Grace's ompaay, of Lowell. Colonel Livlnaston, United Staffs Army, In his repoit to Major Gibson, does not positively oenytthe crossinsj, bu it is his impression that they did not. The following is th substance of Colonel Livingston's report to Maior Gibon: He states that he hail his men stationed about five yards on thl side of the line. There re mained behin l a considerable number of strac frling Fenians upon the Canadian side of the line after the withdrwinn of the main forces, and these men evidently remained for the pur pose of plundetlnpr. 8ome or them stationed themselves on the road, and prevented citizens fiom crossing eitber way. During the atternoon ihey were charged upon by a company of Canadian cavalry, upon whom the Fenians flred, and then, throwing away their muskets, endeavored to get upon the American side of the line. Some'ot them suc ceeded In reaching it, but others took to the woods, and one wus captured by the British. As the cavalry neared the United States troops they were compelled to rein in, otherwise all of the Fenians would have been taken. The Fenians only reached the line a few yards in advance ol the English troops. Colonel Liv ingston reports that the main body of the Fenians weie quiet anl orderly; but the few who remained did so purpcelf to pillage. The slrapglers were loaded with spoils, which Colonel Livingston took possession of, and which will be returned, so fr as possible, to the proper owners. The goods are now in the hsnds of resoonfcible citizens on the.Aoicrican aide, and Will be given up to parties proving propertv. John 'Reynolds, of Chelsea, Mas.; John Mc Geary, of Bos 'on; and Captain Kennedy, 3d Cavalry, saw Thomas Madden shot by citizens of Canada on the ether side ot the line! and saw him pursued and captured on this side of the line, on Saturday afternoon, between 3 and 4 o'clock. The man who had his hand cutoff aa a member of Captain Grace's company, Jrom Lowell. The Dumber of prisoners captured by the Canadians from General Spear's command is re ported to be sixteen. Mrs. Eccles, an American woman, the wife ot John Eccles, at whose house General Spear established his headquarters while at Camp Sweeney, Canada, was shot dead last night by a Brilixh soldier on her way to a well to draw water. The Canadians, suspicious that Fenians were still lurking about that vici nity, and imagining that some were concealed in the house, set a strong guard around the house, and when Mrs. Eccles attempted to cross the field to the well she was challenged. Not answering, she was mistaken for.a Fenian and shot dead. She was a native of Massachusetts. Her husband is an Irish Canadian. While Gene ral Spear occupied their premises as headquar ters all purchases from them were paid in cash. Two companies 3d Artillery, United States regulars, cons'sting of one hundred and twenty live men, under command of Colonel VVildrick, lef t here at noon to-day for Malone. A well-known citizen, residing in Vermont, near Canada, named Mulloney, has made affida vit that he saw British troops on the American side of the boundary line capturing Fenians, and carrying tbem back to Canada. Mullonev's veracity is vouched for by ex-Governor Smith and other responsible citizens. The Fenian prisoners were carried from St. Armand through St. John's for Montreal this morning. They were strongly guarded, and sub jected to many rude taunts and insults from the Canadians. One boy was badly maltreated. Nine hundred British troops went into St. John's this morning from Montreal. It ia the Impression that the prisoners will be tried, and either shot or hung. Colonel O'Neill arrived to-night and has had consultations with Generals Sweeney and Spear and other Fenian olticers. At a general meet ing of officers this alternoon General Sweeney made a ieeling address, which was cordially responded to by all the officers present. General Meade, Ma) or Gitaon, and other United States officers are still here, watching the interests of the Government. General Sweeney's examination will be fixed in a day or two. The question of International comity and neutrality may be discussed in a . novel and interesting form. Terrible Catastrophe Seven Children Killed and Mine Wounded. From the Charletton Courier, June 7. One of the most heart-rending and appaling catastrophes which we hava ever been called upon to record occurred at the village of Bam berg, on the Augusta branch of the South Caro Una Railroad, Beventy-slxjmiles from Charleston, between three and lour o'clock Tuesday alter noon, by which nearly every lamily of that village has been thrown into the deepest gloom and mourning. The scene of this distressing occuirence was about three hundred yards from the depot, in a two story frame building, known as Allen Lodge of Freemasons, lately used as a school-house by Mr. Robert Bea brook and his sister, the former having charge of the male, and the latter ot the female department. Into this building- some eighteen of the scholars, boys and girls, had assembled about three o'clock for the purpose of joining In a fes tive party given by the young misses to their youthful male friends. While In the act of spreading a table with refreshments, candies, cakes, etc., the building was struck by a violent gale of wind or tornado from the west, which Sassed over the village, taking a north-easterly irectioa, sweeping trees, fences, and everything else betore it. me cnimney was carriea away at the same time that the root was rent asunder, An attempt was made by George W. Patrick, one of the older boys, to open the door, but that was lounl to be so jammed as to deiy removal. Another ot the youths, Charles Stewart, then eronosed to escape bv the windows, and lumped otit for the purpose of assisting the others, when the whole building fell, killing young Stewart and five others Instantly, and woundiag ten others, one of whom expired shortly after reach ing borne.
