    THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH. PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, JUNE G, 1800.
LETTICE WHITE.
BY JEAN IHOM.OW.
My neighbor White; we met to day,
Jib slwavs bad a oheerful way,
An it be breather! at east;
Wy neighbor White lives flown the glade,
And I live talcrher. In the shade
Of my old walnut trees.
Bo many lnda and la"e amall,
To feed them all, to clolhe thorn all,
Must surely tax his wit:
T gee his thatch when I look out,
His branching roues creep about,
And vines halt smother it.
Three white-haired urchins climb his eaves,
And little watch-fires heap with leaves,
And milky nlberts hoard;
And there his oldest daughter stands
With downoaat eye1, and skilful hands
Beloro her ironing board.
She comforts all her mother's days,
And with her sweet, obedient ways
She makes ber labor light;
So sweet to hear, so lair to see I
Oh, she is so murh too p"od lor me,
That lovely Lettice White 1
'Tis hard to feel oneself a fool !
Wilb that same lass I went to school,
I then was iireat and wife;
She read upon an easier book,
And I 1 never cured to look
Jnto her sky-blue eyes.
And now I know they must be there,
Sweet eyes, behind those lashes lair,
That will not raise their rim;
If maids be ehy, ho cures who can;
Hut it' a man be shy a man
Why then the worse lor him 1
My mother cries, "For such a lad
A wife Is easy to be had,
And always to be found;
A finer scholar scarce can be,
And for a loot and leg," says she,
"lie beats the country round.
'My handsome boy must stoop his head,
To clear her door, whom he would wed;"
Weak praise, but fondly sun? I
"0 mother, scholars sometimes fail
And what can foot and leg avull,
Tj htm that wants a tongue 1"
When by her ironing-board I sit,
Her little kisters round me flit,
And bring me forth their store;
Dark cluster giapes of duty blue,
And small sweet apples, bright ot hue,
And crimson to the core.
But she abidcth silent, fair;
All shaded by her flaxen hair,
The blushes come, and go;
I look, and I no more can speak
Than the red sun that on her cneck
Smiles as he lieth low.
Sometimes the roses by the latch,
Or scarlet vine-leaves from her thatch,
Come sailing down like birds;
When Irom their drifts her board I clear
.She thanks me, but I scarce can hear
The shjly utt red words.
Oft have I wooed sweet Lettice White,
By da light, and by candle-light
When we two were apart.
Some better day. come on apace,
And let me tell her face to face
"Maiden, thou hast my heart !"
How gently rock you poplars high,
Against the reach of primrose sky,
With heaven's pale candles stored !
She sees them ail, sweet Lettice White;
I'll e'en go sit again to-night
Besid c her ironing-board !

Things to Think Of. Tho number of lan-

about bSlanced by an eaual number ol births.

ot law relating to imprisonment lor debt, of
some consequence to loreijmers, and not Rene

arrested a Bavarian on the srround that he was
about to leave the country without paying his
debts. The latter disputed the legality ot the
arrest, on tho plea that his creditor is a Bava

of the privilege conferred on creditors by the
