THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAm. PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MAV 31, 180'
' - t'ommodore Vandeibllt's ItesponNe.
Governor Bewaril having, by direction of the
liesidrnt, transmitted to Commodore Vander
tolli the jrold medal unanimously voted him by
Con cms in aoknowledsment of his generous
(itt To oor country, in her hour of darkest peril,
ot the steamship VandtrbUt, worth $1,000,000,
Mr. Vanderbilt responded as follows:
Kw York, May 8, 1866. Sirt-Your commnnl
At ton oft be 17th of April, Informing me thai the
t en tress ot the United Btates had, by their resoln.
tion oi the 28tb ot January , 1804, tendered to mo
their thanks lor the sift of the steamer Vanderbilt.
and rexiutsied the President to cause a (fold medal
to bo struck and iorwarded to me in oommemora
tion oi thi ffllt, has been plaeed in mv hands
1 have also received the medal, together with an
attested copy ot the resolution, in compliance with
wbieb you have caused ic to be transmitted.
You nave been p. eased to express toe hope that
the medal wou A be acceptable to me, with yonr
eonrratu ations tor the consclousno s Wbicb you
consider 1 cannot inil to cherish ot havlnir, by the
act wbicb its premutation commemorates, rendered
a service to my country at a critical period In its
history.
l'eimit me, sir, to return my acknowledgment for
this national recoenltion oi the act reterred to, and
to express the satisfaction with which 1 bave re
ceived this generous token of remembrance. It may
not tic inappropriate tor me t o refer to the transac
tion which rav rise to the resolve ot Conenws
which your department has now so gracofully
executed.
About the year 1866 I formed the design and com
menced the work of a steamship, lor Ihe purpose
f Demonstrating that individual enterprise could,
without the aid of Governmental encouragement,
place upon tlio ocean steampships equal at least in
snacnitude, power, and speed to any which bad been
constructed under Governmental patronage and pro
tection in any part of the world. An expenditure of
ft 100,000 produced the steamship Vamterbitt, wnicn
carried the lla ol our country across the sea iu a
loss space of time tbau any national banner had
been hitherto borne.
On the ltith of Match, 1862. I received at mv res!
dence n this city a letter nom tbo War Department,
inquiring if 1 would undertake to prevent the Con
feuerate steamer Merrimac lrom cominir out of the
harbor of fioriolk, and uririiiR my immediate atten
tion, as ihe danger was most imminent, and "there
was no time to tost." I answered by teloirraph that
1 woulo go to Washington the next day. On too
morning ot the 17th ot March, I called at tho War
lie partment, whore 1 saw tor the Ural time Mr. Stan
ton, the Secretary of War. He requested me to ac
company him to the Executive Man-ion, where I
was Introduced to Mr. Uncol", io whom 1 was trien
personally a ttranger. '1 hu President asked me if I
thought 1 could, with the aid ot my steamships, do
anything to prevent the Merrimac from pott n out
of Hampton Koads. I replied to him that tt was
my opinion that if the steamer Vanderbilt was
there, prtporly manned, the Merrimac would
not venture to come out; or, if she did,
that the chances were ten to one that tho Vanderbilt
would sink and destroy hor, Mr. Lincoln asked
me to name tho turn of mouev lor which 1 would
undertake the service. I replied to him that nothing
would induce me to become a ipocuator upon the
necessities of the Government, and that I would not
mention a sum as ihe value of her charter, but that
I wen d make a pit of her to the Goverumeut for
the service proposed, the President replied, "I
accept her." I left him, promising that the Vander
bilt should be at Fortress Mouroo, properly equipped
and officered, tinder my directions, within three or
lour das at furthest, and she was there within the
time. The requisite instrument ol trauster was sub
sequently executed by me, and transmitted to the
W ar Department.
Ihe resolution of Congress, ot which yon have In
formed mo, truly states that 1 have In no manner
sought requital lor the eitt, and the recognition of
which, in the discharge of your official duty, vou
have iven me, was altogether unsolicited. I sha'l
proudly preserve iho splendid token ot appreciation
wh.ch ou have transmitted io me, and it is mv
hope that those who come alter me, as they read the
ineerip ions ol the medal, and are reminded of the
event in thoir lather's life which oiuted it to be
struck, will inflexibly resolve that, should oar Gov
ernment be again imperilled, no pccm iarv sacrifice
in too large to make In lis behalf, and no inducement
sutlicientiy great io attempt to profit by its ueoossi
ties. 1 am, sir, your Very obedient servant,
C. Vamdkbbilt.

THE GLORIOUS VICTOEY.
The Falrraount Vidette says:
"We congratulate our Uuion friends ou the
jrlorious result of lat Thursday's contest. The
Ilebcl battalion has been routed horae, foot and
dragoon. The victory was easier won, more
complete, and diEaHtrou to the Hebe's than any
ot us anticipated. We have taken a great many
prisoners, whom we shall treat kindly. On the
eve of battle, a great many, including some
officers, deserted the Rebel battalion, came Into
our ranks, and fought on our aide. Of course,
we think they did .right, and we heartily thank
them lor their assistance: but, at the same time,
we can't help but think tney were very foolish
to have enlisted under the Confederate banner
when it was flrt flung out. Their experience in
the past ought to serve as a valuable lesson for
the lututv."
Vinilash, X. J.. Several manufacturing com-
Jianies are etarting in this! place. A company
or tho m ami fixture ot Shaker Hoods and Straw
Goods on a Urge scale; a Fruit Canning Com
I any; an AfTicrirtural Implement Company, and,
other establishments. The proprietor, Charles
K. Landis, Esq., has erected several large fac
.tory buildinfi, with steam-power and rooms to
lent; also, a foundry. This place is rapidly
; growing in tovpxartauce. There is more improve
ment going tui at the present time than any
time previous.
