tQib 9 absolutely the Diet trial, not merely
01 this, but ot any apparatus constructed in a
similar manner, even the inventor declines to
mak any prophecies of wtiat mayor may not
be achieved lu this trip. Whether' ho intends or
expects ro reach any particular point, is known
only to himself. Ti.e only information which
he vouchsafes to any one is that fie "intends to
see what she will do." The principle upon which
lie bases hie theories has been previously and
sncceieully tested, but the present construction
ot his apparatus has not been, and it is not im
probable tnat unforeseen diiliculties may anse
in the management ol thr appaiatus which will
prevent his accomplishing all that be evidently
hopes to do. We shall wait with much interest
tho return ot the ivrounuuts, or some intelli
gence ot their whereabouts.
A lull account of the concstruction of the
Aereon," and tbe principles on which its ope
ration is based, was published in the Tribune of
.Monday, May 14, but it nmy not be amis to
briefly mention again the main points of its dif
lerence from ordinary balloons. The aerostat
ot this apparatus, instead ot being pear-shaped,
like that ol the common balloon, mor resem
bles a long lemon terminatins in a sharp point
at either end. This floats horizontally in the
air, and by means of a strong netting passing
oyer the whole bap, supports tho car, shaped
like a cradle, of wickcr-woik, about eight feet
in lencth by two in width. A strong leather
strap passing along the lop and bottom ol the
balloon, and drawn tugether by cords, forni9 a
deep groove in the upper and under sides.
The principle ol its operation is that, owing to
its peculiar form, it will move much more easily
in the direction of Its leugth than in any other ;
and consequently when it is rising through the
air or sinking toward the earth, if one of its
points bo turned partially in the direction in
which it is going, the b ll'oon will glide otT in
the direction in which it is pointed, and thus by
alternately rising and sinking in slanting direc
tions, the machine is propelled ahead. The bal
loon with which Dr. Andrews has undertaken
his present trip is about R6 feet in extreme
length and 42 feet in diameter in the middle. It
contains, when fully inflated, about 6u,U00 cubic
leet ot gas, and u estimated to be able to sustain
a burden ot 1H00 pounds.
LATER BETTJEN OF TH.E iEBONACTS.
Since the above was written, we have seen
Mr. Trow, one ol the gentlemen who accom
panied Dr. Andrews in his trip, and have learned
fl'OIl) lllin t.l.p nnrtiriil,it.a hn it
first siartine, as was apprehended, the rope by
which the rudder is managed became entangled,
and the vessel drilled some distance before she
could be controlled. Waen the rojes became
clear, it was louud that she could be readily
managed and tinned iu any direction, billowing
to iiiaoility to give the machine as much incli
nation as was needed, thbv were uuable to make
headway against tne wind, which had by this
time become quite fresh. The utmost they
could do was to hold tnemselves from going
with tho wind, but not to travel asaiust it.
Under these circumstances, it was not iudced
advisable to go very tar awav; Hiid after cruising
about for awhile, the vovauers flually landed near
the village of Astoria, L. 1. The people of As
toria rendered them errv assistance to secure
and Back the balloon, and they all reached
Jiew York late in tho evening, hignly pleased
with their ti1p. Dr. Andrews and his com
panions are all satisfied that by making some
trilling alterations in ihe rigging ot the appa
ratus, iliey will be able to maie headway against
any ordinary breeze, and they are til! sanguine
as to the bual success ol their plan. As soon as
the requisite alleraMnus are completed, another
trial will bo made, of which public notice will
be given. JV. Y. lrilunt, Saturday.
