It is a credit to Pennsylvania and New Jersey
that five schools, wifh five huudred children, are
at this time heme educated in one Southern city
alone at their charge. ,
Young Aen's liristian Association. The regu
lar monthly meeting will be held on next Mon
day nieht, in the Baptist Church, Broad and
Arch streets, at 8 o'clock. Hon. J udpe Turner,
of California, will deliver a lecture on "The new
El Doiado; or the Golden Shores of the Pacific-."
Delegates to the National Convention will be
elected. Tbere will be music by the choir of the
asbociation. Tickets mav be obtained gratui
tously at the ro jnis of the Association, No. 1210
Chesnut street.
Presbyterian. The receipts ol the Presby
terian board of Foreign Missions duiing the last
year amounted to $207,520-Gj, aud the expendi
tures to $210,37G(8, leavina a balauce ai?aint
the treasury of S849-73. The Kev. D. A.' Cun
ningham, Pastor of the Scots' Reformed Presby
terian Church, of this city, has received a cull to
the Spring Garden Presbyterian Church The
Richmond Presbyterian Church, of Philadel
phia, has given a unanimous call to the Rev. A.
M. Jelly.
Roman Catholic St. Mary's Catholic Church,
in this city, is to be immediately renovated at a
large cost. Among the improvements to be
made will be the erection ot an altar in honor of
St. Philoniena. baiimount Catholic Church,
under charge of Rev. Father Masrinn, has been
much Improved and beautified. It is riow one
of the finest churches in the city. Tho "Italian"
Catholic Church, Mairiott street, below Kiehth,
has been much improved Bince the institution
of the present pastor, Father Sarrautino. A new
altar has been erected and a hue fresco painting
has been placed over it. A marble statue of the
Blessed Virgin has been presented to the church,
and one of St. Joseph is now in the hands ot the
sculptor.
Htureir, Tho Rodcf Sholem congregation,
of Philadelphia, nave entered into negotiations
with Rev. Dr. Jastrow, formerly of Warsaw, now
ot Worms, to become their l'.ubbl. He is offered
a salary of $4tu0 per annti'ti. Mr. Joseph Ein
stein has been re-elected President ol ihe con
gregation. Protectant Episcopal. At (H race Church at, 10
o'clock tomorrow morniufr, the Rev. Charles
Clarke Harris will be ordained tothe priesthood.

the alternoon, at 4 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Harris

will be at Trinity Church. Southwark, Sunday
afternoon. Bishop Vail continued 2U8 persons
in the various Protestant Episcopal churches,
from the 1st to the 10th of M;iv.
Methodist Episcopal. 'ihe Ladies' Union Aid
Society of this city intend holding a grand Fair
next month, for the benefit of the Home tor
Ai;ed Methodists. The congregation connected
wuh Asbury M. E. Church, West Philadelphia,
have purcha'-od a parsjiiai?'. on Market street,
above Thirty-iourth, at a cost of $1000. The
Centenary M. E. Church, in the same ward, have
ako purchased a parsonage ou McAlpin street,
above Locust. '

yesterday, William Cutter had a hearing, charged
with being concerred with John Brown in tho

weeks ago and was held for trial. Cutter was
only arrested yesterday. Several witnesses testi- J
tied that Brown, Cutler, and another younar man I
were seen in the neighborhood of the siore on I

high hats in the early art of the evcnlmr, aud
black clothes aud caps at a later hour. This was

Susan Brady, colored, was held by Alderman
Tittcrmary to answer the charge o? stealing a
piece of calico horn a dry goods st'jre on South
street.
William Watkins, alias Capain Squills, ar
rested two weeks ago by Defective Stephens, on
a charge of being a professional pickpocket, and
sent to prison by Alderman Beitler under the
nintty day act, was before Judge Peirce yester
day morning, on habeas corpus. Since he was
'committed he has been identified by Judge
Murray, of Harrisburg, as a man who stole
trom him a valuable gold watch just before his
airest, on aUidee uvenue car. The Julge en
tered complaint at the station on May 6th, with
a description of the thief, and Mr. Stephens
ultimately caotured Captain Squills. Judge
Murray failed to be present at the first hearing,
. and th accused was committed under the
ntne'y day act. His counsel, L. C. Cassidy,
Esq., sued out the writ, which was heard yes
terduy. at the private oiilce of the Judge in
question. The defendant was remanded on the
ninety day commitment. When these days
have expired be will be rearrested on the charge

cars have been notified by High Constable Clark
that they must aot. permit such cars to remain
upon the tracks on Market street. The com
