Discovery of a New Star.
The following communication appears In the
Boston Iranscript: Will you oblige me by mak
ing public the extraordinary and interesting
phenomenon of the appearance, of a new and
brilliant star, in the heavens, doubtless a varia
ble star of lone period ?
Mr. Beth C. Chandler, Jr., of Boston, a youioj
astroromer of great earnestness and promise,
has been tor a considerable time engaged in the
careful determination of stellar magnitudes,
with a view to the discovery of any variability
which may exist, and has already found reason
to suspect fluctuations in the brilliancy of seve
ral stars heretofore supposed constant. On
Monday evening, May 14, being about to repeat
some observations of the magnitude ot tbe stars
in the constellation of tho Northern Crown, ho
peroelved a new star in that well-known group,
brighter than any of the others, with one excep
tion, tind certainly brighter than tho third
magnitude. The recent unfavorable weather
bud greatly Interfered with observations, but he
is positive that, three weeks previous, no star
wus there ot sufficient brightness to attract at
tention. The new star Is close to the star F.pMlon
Corouu), Irom which it is distant' less ilum a
degree in declination, and Is this evening a very
compicuous obiect, being .-till as hngtit as any
star but one in the constellation, although ft
seems tb have diminished in brilliancy by at
least six tenths of a magnitude within the last
twenty lour hours.
On the 14th, ut 11 o'clock P. M., its brightness,
by Mr. Chandler's comparison, was between that
oi Beta and Gamma Hercull1", rather nearer to
the latter: certainly two- birds oi a mutrnitude
btighter than either Beta cr Gamma Corona1, or
Kp&ilon Ilerculis, ani very decidedly br.gbter
than Delta Bootis.
To-night, May 15, at ! P. M., its magnitude
was tbe same as tbat of Beta Corome or t uima
Hercuiis. and estimated by Mr. Chandler aud
myself as intermediate between the two. It Is
clearly fainter than Delta Bootls.
The magnitude of these. stars of comparison
were thus determined at Albany in 185d:-
Beta Hercuiis, 2'3 Beta Corouie, . 35
Delta Bootls, :vl Gamma Coronie, 3-ti
Epsilon Hercuiis, 3-4 Epsilou Corouut, 3'9
Gamma Hercuiis, 36!
so tbat the maernltude of the new star must have
been 2'8 or 2'9 last night, and 3'5 to-night.
Clouds have unfortunately prevented any de
termination of its place this evening, although I
had hi ped for a toletable observation by means
oi a transit instrument temporarily in my pos
session. But careful alignments give ar rough
position which must be quite near to the truth.
It. A. 16d. 63m. 66s. N. Decl. 26d. 18m.
Tbi9 corresponds with the position of a star of
the 95 magnitude (. e., havins about one-seventieth
part of the light ot the faintest star, visible
tojhe nuked eye) mapped down by Argelander,
m his "Inspection oi the Northern Heavens,"
about the year 1HG5. It does not appear ever to
have been regularly observed by any astrono
mer, and muft indeed have been beyond. the
reach of most meridian instruments. It the
new star be not identical with the very faint
object noted by Argelander, it is so near an
entirely to conceal it.
Such phenomena are not entirely unknown in
tbe annals of astronomy. Besides the well
known cases of the new stars observed by Tycho
Brahe and by Kepler, which suddenly shone
forth with great brilliancy, and disappeared
after a short period the variable star Mva Celt
attains the second magnitude about once in 11
montus diminishing in the interval to extreme
laintness; but very few casts are on record where
so great brilliancy has been suddenly mani
fested. The only rne lalrly comparable with,
this keems to have been the "new s ar" of 1670.
This appeared suddenly as a star of the third.
nncnituJe, c.suppeared, shone out once more,
after somewhat more than two years became
invisible, and has so remained.
The extremely rapid diminution of liaut dur
ing a single dav forbids any confident expecta
tion ot a long visibility for this new accession
to our firmament; but it will probably be a con
spicuous obiect for some little time to come. It
may be readily recognized by anv one at all
acquainted with the constellation of the North
ern Crown, being just outside of, .and during
the evening belqw, the terminal star of tho
curve. Very respectfully yours,
B. A. Gould.
