Tho Editor, bavins received a note from Santa Anna, was about poinir on to EliKibeihnnrt; but on look ing into ''Peterson's Detector" fouud tho note to be a counterfeit. (From Oar Own Correspondent.) KLizABETnroitT, New Jersey, May 17. Mr. Scries Editor: Here I am, in the pre sence of his Popocatupelt Highness Brigadier General Santa Anna I. I came to see him with the laudable desire of rinding out what he wanted, and other private matters, and reporting it with all haste lor your column. 1 arrived at this inland city by way of Tacony, n the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad, and immediately inquired of the newsboys for the General's residence they showed me, and on entering the front door. I found the umbrella of New York the HeraidCs reporter in the stand, eo I knew I had not come too soon. As soon as I could, I rushed upstairs and hallooed through tho keyhole "Correspondent cf The Philadelphia Evening Telegraph, and nobody to introduce him !' The General immediately took his wooden leg off the table, and cried, "Open ze door," which I did, when I was soon alone in his highness' presence. The furniture was neat, not gaudy, such as would become the representative of a republic like Mexico CaDton matting on the floor, four chairs of three different varieties, a very well veneered table, with most all of the veneering yet on it, and two demijohns, constituted the stock of .fur niture on hand. I made known to the General, in as few words as possible, the object ot my visit, when he expressed great pleasure in hav ing an opportunity to tell what he was here for. Yesterdav he had told four New York reporters, and he would be glad to commence with me to-day. "Senor I suppose ze newspaper folks want to know why I leave my tranquil home at St. Thomas. One was, ze musquitos wa begin to come, and ze ozer to restore ze republic of Mexico which I made myself forty years ago. I want to get some Mexican Centres formed in zis great country, and I be ze Head Centre, and when Senor Stephens get what money he want and leavo New York, zen I want my friends to Ito to Monsieur Jones' Woods and cheer for zo Republic of Mexico which I mae forty years ago. Ze Mexicans now want monish most of zem as I know want monish, and ze hope of all peoples as want monish must be zis great country." "Are you aware, General," we ri9ked, "that people think you want to be President of Mexico and get hold of that $30,000,000 loan lately in troduced into Cor.giess?" "Bah, Senor, I could not expect zat, for fcenor Johnson, zo American President, would Dot take notice of ze bill, and voc you call veto it, before he see vot it was; or, if he did not, we wowld use ze monish in our Circles hero before it get to Mexico. No, Bar. All I waut Is to be ze Head Centre of ze Mexican republic which I made lorty years ago. I want also to see ze preat men ot zis gre.it country. I want to see Senor Horace Grceloy and eome of ze principal black Republicaus; ze Mexican Republicans are sot all black, but some of zem are. I have one who is my cook, and zey tell him at zis house that he look like Senor Greeley. I want also to Bee Generul Scott. I did not got a trood chance to eee him when he was in ze Mexican republic, because I was very busy wheu he was there, and I had to leave as soon as he came where I was, and all ze time be was in ze republic I was kept very busy, and did not get a chance to see him. I see out of my window on ze wharf they are building a sign with ze words BCBMBII SHOT HERE. And I have been waiting to see ze shooting, and zc rubbish. "If I wus In my r.epubhc of Mexico, which I made forty years aao, I would get all ze French men, and put zem together, and put a wall OBJECT OP SANTA ANNA'S VISIT. around ze placp, and put on zc walls big guns pointing at ze Frenchmen, and I would say on ze sign : RUBBISH SHOT HERB. 'And I would shoot zem, and all zc Mexicans, too, zat was zc enemies of ze Republic which I made forty years ago, and zat 1 ze way I would make ze republic free." The above is but a brief resume of the im portant conversation I had with the General, and If you think it will serve the purpose of that interesting republic you may print it. I see the correspondent of the London limes has printed his interview with President Johnson, and surely the policy Ol General Santa Anna Is equally in need of explanation. As I was about to leave, the General, leaving state manners, said, "Senor, will you indulge?" pointing to the demijohns. I consented, and then and there the General and myself drank to the health, of Santa Anna of the Mexican Republic, and I of the Mouroe Doctrine, both very sick men. Your Own CortRESi'ONDBNT. Fun in Council. Myth CrilTiths, last Thursday, ofl'ered a reso lution Instructing the Chief Engineer to obtain in writing from the contractors when the Chcs nut Street Bridge will be finished and ready for travel. We would, in behalf of the Bridge inform this Myth that there are too many serious matters claiming the attention of Councils without the members indulging in jokes like this. It this thing is allowed to go on, some body will next ask, What is going to become of th Gas Committee ? Or, What is the New Court House, to Cost? Which are the Streets 'that have been cleaned ?
