We hare, as you know, boen getting tolerably fas'.
In our maimer at the Went End. I he prosont tea
ton ha witnessed a further development ot feml
nine tnceicnuenc. "Lailio' clubs" are this year
the ' to" in the most lashionabie circle. The
oong and unmarried lames do not take part In
them to anr great cxten ; the "I risk v matrons"
there icigu supremo Ait'.ouh these assemblies,
which are nold as a general rule, in the afternoon
at the houses of the members, aro called "ladies'
C ubs." gentlemen are tol exo ttdtd. A ticket to the
"bcnfllers" or to tha "Jolly Dog" those aro the
Danes ot two of tl:e roo-1 fashionable is tcckoned a
great favor arid can only be obtained by those who are
in hiph (avor with presiding authorities, among;
whom moie than ono uuchess occupies a prominent
pos t en. The anwemeiits consist ot conversation
nd smoking tho ladios doing tneir part nianiully
with ttieir cigarett a To (rive vou some Idea ot the
tieoCotn ot manners wh.ch these reunions are in
tended to promo e, 1 mar eiate that the "Scutllers"
are 10 called because at their gatherings chairs and
tables are banished from the loom, and the member
sit or lounge on the floor or en low divans I With
out sa)ing for a moment that there Is anvthing
wrong in thesrt things 1 cannot conceal from mvself
that thev tend to encourage, a "loudness" of manner,
to use an expressive slang phrase, which in now be
coming very conspicuous among our upper ten.
An examplo of this was afforded very conspicu
ously the olner night at one of the West End thea
tres, where the ennuis was actually dropped because
a very aristocratic party In a private box near the
stage could not be induced to moderate the conver
sation t bey wire carrying on. The curtain was not
diawn up apain until the said party bad lult.
GOVKBNOB HEWABD ON 1JI9 WAY HOME. HOD..
W'lllittL-i H. Seward, Secretary ol State, passed
through the city upon the noon train, on his
way to Auburn, whithor he noes to celebrate the
sixty-tilth anniversary ol his birthday, which
occurs to morrow. The tact of his presence in
town whs known to but tew. But some of his
friends vt bo became aware of it, availed them
selves ol the opportunity to express their regard
tor the honored stutorntin and patriot. Mr.
Seward is looking; exceedingly well. But lew
truccH are visible of t.ie terrible injuries he
suflered at the hands ol the a'sassin l'ayno. He
is In the best possible spirits, and npeiik with
undoubtinfr coutidcuce of the ultimata and
speedy emergency ol the country Irom all cm
barrafcemcnta that now surrouud Ihe question ol
Reconstruction. Mr. Seward will spend about a
week of respite from the duties and cares of

Manufacture ot I'iay mo Cards. Tho playing-card
manufacturers in Paris occupy the
quartMT Bonne Nouvelle, Sr. Mery. and St.
Victor. There are seventeen o( these head men,
of whom nine employ above eloven workmen.
Emplottnp 2G0 persons in all. card manufac
turers make on an average 2,000,000 in the year.
Of these 2(10 persons 167 are men, 78 women,
and 16 either boy or erirl apprentices under 16
years of age. The men are overseers, painters,
pasteboard makers, glimmers, cutters, moulders,
polishers, bellows-blowers, and porters. The
women are sorters, scrapers, prcssers. The men
work either by contract or by the day, and earn
Irom 4 irancs to 7 Iraucs. Too women earn from
1 franc 60 centimes to 3 hancs. Apprentices
from 75 centimes (that is, 716) to 1 franc 60 cen
times. They have two hotiri lor meals in their
twelve hours' work. Of 67 who can read and
write, 15 are noted lor bad conduct, and 15
seldom come to work on Mondays.
A Human Curiosity. The Berlin newspapers
have the iollowing curious paragraph: "A
Hungarian girl, born at Oedenburg, without
haudr, now twenty years of age, has been giv
ing 6ome cuiious representations in the Prus
sian capital. She performs with her mouth the
functions of hands. She sews, embroiders, exe
cutes the most delicate work with pearls, even
threads her needle and makes knots, all with
the tongue, rpparently without difliculty, and
certainly witnout the assistance of any one.
Part of the works thus executed are destined
for public exhibition." Most people will hesi
tate to. believe such marvels until the.y witness
them.
Cattlk Down, Goats Up. An Irish paper
notices the fact that one unexpected and curious
effect of the cattle disease in England has been
to raise the value of goats to an extraordinary
degree. These hitherto despised animals are
now exported in considerable numbers from
Ireland, and have bec-n sold in several English
counties at from 4 to 5 each, the ordinary price
having been about 10s.
British Coinage. The coinage at the Hint 1n
London, for this vear. will cost 40.182. ot which
10.000 is tor eold, 30,000 lor silver, and 7500
lor copper. A sum equal to tho last will be re
covered by the sale ot old copper not required
for the recoinaee. The seignorage to be paid
into the Exchequer in roepect of the year's coin
age of silver is estimated at 30,000.
A Valuable SriNNET. The late French com
poser Clapieson left among his treasures a spin
net of the sixteenth century, which ig said to be
worth at least sixty thousaud francs. The keys
are of agate and lapis la.uli, and the ivory frame
work is covered with two thousand five hundred
precious stones set in silver.
Relics of the Weslbys. Rev. Samuel Dunn,
an English Methodist, is exhibiting to admixing
congregations various relics among others, a
piece ol John Wesley's preaching gown, two
neckties of the Rev. Charles Weslev, and the
spectacles, comb, and pocket-book of Dr. Adam
Clarke.
A Curious Accident. In Birmingham, Eng
land, the other day, a woman accidentally killed
her inlaut by pressing its head against the trout
of her dress, in which a needle was sticking.
The needle entered the child's head, aud caused
fatal injuries.
P18CATORT. The value of th.e fresh fish sold
annually at the various French seaports is esti
mated at 1,400,000; but, by the time it has paid
the octroi and other duties, its cost to the con
sumer is more than quadrupled.
A Tbade Revived. An Antwerp letter states
that the ship Due de Jirnbant had iu-t arrived
there Irom India with 3500 bale of cotton. For
the last eight or nine years not a single bale has
reached that port direct.
Destitution. A subscription has been opened
in Madrid to succor the Spanish emigrants now
in Portugal who took part in the rising headed
by General Prim.
