Women'b Rights in VsnifONr. The following
Is an advertisement which we clip from the Rut
land Herald:
"I aorbid anr one in the State of Vermont marry
ing Joseph Trunibly, ol Chittenden, Vormont, to
Hiss Sophia 1'e.ky, ot Brandon, Vermont, for doing
engaged to some onu else the second time.
. . ' "Jcxia Goosoir.
"Brandon, March 80, 1866."
Julia's "keerd" is a little muddled in its coin
rosifcon, since it Is impossible to tell whether it
is the wicked Joseph or the fair Sophia who
has been engaced to "some one else the second
time," but by her boldness in sticking up for her
rights, Julia has set an example to all the race
ot marriageable girls, which, we suggest, it
would not be a bad idea for tbem to follow. If
every tilted girl will reBent her wroners in this
way, the effect will be wondertully conducive of
moral and social reform. It is lar better than
Miss Harris' plan ol letting daylicht into the
bowels of her lover, and much preferable to
cold "piscn," to w hich so many resort as a balm
for love's ills. Our columns are ever open to
the complaints of the jilted portion oi humanity.

Can Senator Foster Pbeside Another Term?
It has been supposed by some persons that if
Mr. Foster is re-elected Senator he can hold his
position as presiding officer of the Senate nnd
acting Vice-President right over until another
Vice-President is elected by the people. This
blunder is exposed in a letter to the Hartford
2'rtss: "Mr. Foetcr.s Senatorship expires on the
3d of March, 18t7, and he is acting Vice-President
only so long as the Senate continues him
as its presiding oiliccr. It is the immemorial
usage of the Senate to keep itself in a continuous
staie of organization. It never permits itself to
take the risk of an organization after a new Con
gress meets it does so beforehand. For in-
stance, at 12 o'clock, March 4 (the ieeal expira
tion ot March 3), the presiding otliccr announces
that the region has expired. A moment, alter
(il a usual the Senate has an extra session) the
new presiding officer raps his gavel and calls the
new Senate to order."
An Aggravated Cash op Suspension. A
number of men at Walkerton, Illinois, having
suspected one Philip Shultz of stealing a certain
man's pocket-book, took him into an upper
room and hanged him, in order to make him
confess, and on lailioc to make him do so on the
lirst triul, tliey put him up again, and kept him
up so long that when let down life was solar
extinct that it took about an hour to bring him
to. Afterwards the pocket-book was lound, and
JShultz proved innocent. He is a returned sol
dier, aud has commenced proceedings ngainst
his persecutors.
