On Market street, near tho Cenrt Honsn, the Catholics bare almost oomp'eted a larre and splendid building, of bron stone. Jt is on tho Ootuio style of architecture, and Is very elegant. ' The fine struolore on Fnarth and Benson streets, beloncing to the fcccond Presbyterian Church, Rev. Mr. Baker, nasior, is well advanced towards comp e tlon, and when finished will be an ornament to that part ot the city. The gentlemen connected with it hare been unremitting in their efforts to raise money to complote it. j Camden Home. The Camden Home for Friendless Children daring the past year has been lnstrnmental in the acoomp'tshment ol (Treat rood. It baa been In operation but little more than a year, during which time it has found comfortable homos for a nomberof parentlees children. The Institution has been liberally suBtaned by the philanthropic of Camden, and now bas twenty children, all that there are room and aooommodatious for. But the managers have secured the building adjoining the one now occupied, which, when fitted op, will give room for aiout ten additional occupants. They have also secured a fine lot of ground at Fifth and I'lum streets, on whioli it Is contemplated soon to erect a suitable building, witu all the necessary arrangements and accommodations for the uses ot the institution. , The Passenger Railroad. The project of Luilding the new railroad in Camden, connecting Cooper's and Kaighn's l'oints, tor the accommoda tion ol the puDllo, is one that meets with tne favor ot nearly every publ.o-splr.tod citizen, and will be of the greatest poasib.e advantage and convenience to all concerned. 1 he Company are taking the neces sary measares to commence the work, which will be prosecuted vigorously to completion as soon as it is begun. The stock is being rapidly taken, and bids lair to become a valuable investment. It traverses in its loute the entire length of the cltv, running down Front street to Kaighn's Point avenue, and up Fourth to Cooper's F oint. Still at Their Work. The thieves are still at their work In the country robbing farmers of their food. Almost every larmor has been annoyed the present spring with these midnight depredators, wbo carry away chickens, geese, turkeys, and all kinds of articles they can find. One or two hare bad their pigs stolen out of the r peus. The annoy ance baa become so great, and these robberies so ex tensive, that handsome rewards bave been ottered, and other precautions taken, for the apprehension and conviction of the perpetrators oi these acts of villany, who bave become exceedingly bold. Temperance Progress. The progress ot the canso of temperance in Camden seems to be favorable, and bids lair to accomplish muoh good. Sevoral new societies bave been organized under the auspiceB ot the M. . Church, and the ministers have been instructed to preaoh on that and the sub ject of education, in their respective charges, as often 8 they find it convenient. The delegates irom the different churches gave a brief outline ol their histories, and ot their early struggles in the cause of Congregationalism, alter which the Con toienco adjourned to meet the second Wednes day in dune The Philadelphia Gas WoRKs.--The Special Committee of belect Council appointed to examine into the management of the Phllaaelphia bas Woika held an adjourned meeting last evening. Colonel Page, Chairman ot the Committee, stated that since the last meeting he bad examined into the subject, and bad concluded that the Committee was bound to continue the investigation, unless something should present itself that would prevent it ; but, in the absence oi witnesses, the investiga tion would bave to be postpoued to a future meet ing. After some conversation, the Chairman was authorized to address n communication to the Presi dent and Board of Trustees, oontaimng certain in terrogatories. A Suspicious Character. A few days since Chief Letectlve Franklin received a tele graphio despatch irom Springfield, Illinois, request ing him to arrest a man, whose description was given, on a charge of murder. Yesterday a man answering the description was arrested, and while he admits he leit Illinois in a hasty manner, he denies it was because of a murder, but alleges ha bad a law-suit pending, and did not desire to meet it. He waa locked up, and the authorities of the State of Illinois apprized of the aireet, but no re sponse had been bad to tbe telegram op to a late hour last evening. i The Soldiers in Session. The Soldiers' Convention, which met on Tuesday in the Chatnbor of lommou Council, bad another session yesterday, wheu verbal reports were, made by delegates Irom Blair, Northampton. Chester, and Puiladelphia coun ties in relerence to tbe state ot the Soldiers' Unions in those sections, representing them generally to be in a fioutishing condition. All ot the speakers advo cated a Centrft! Union, to which the others would be auxiliary.
