lAiUr from John l.chr on the Condi,
tionof Nentluaeut la tltKitt.
Lexington, Va., April 25. Thomas Shankland,
Esq., New York City My Drar Sir: A 4 I have
heard nothing from'you since my reply to your
letter ot the 4th of January lust, I "liuve'con
eluded that owing to the great derangement of
the maiU, it has tailed to rearh you. 1 there
fore write again hoping for better luck thin time.
Everything is moving along very quietly In
this part of the countrv. The people are orderly
and law-ubiilintr, iuliill'ng strictly the obliga
tions they have assumed to the Government of
the United States. As an evidence ot the feeling
which exists, I send von so much ol Judge
Shillcy's clurtre to the (irund Jury, delivered
here on the 12ih inst., as relates to the freed
men. The charge has beeu universally ap
proved by the bar and the people, and will, I
am sure, command your approbation. I sent a
copy ol our town paper, containing it in full,
to the President, and requested him to read it.
Much of Ihe Ill-feeling manifested by the radi
cals towards the people of the South trrows out
of the misrepresentations and slanders prepared
and ciiculutcd by the agents of the Freedmen's
Uurcau. They desire to retain their positions, as
their dutH'B arc light and their pay good better,
indeed, thnn they can hope for in any other
business. Henco the persistent efforts niade by
liine tenths of them to provne to the authorities
that Mir people are disloyal. Sooner or later,
the minds of the Northern people will be dis
abused, and we must be patient until that time
shall come.
As to the firmness, eourae, patriotism, and
Integrity oi the President, there is no iivision
auionu our people. They have entire confidence
In him, believe he is endeavoring to save the
country by a restoration of the Union, nnd
while, under present circumstances, they run
render him no material aid In the structrle with
the radicals, he has their best wishes for his
fcuccess.
My time and attention is deVoted to my pro
fession, and will be so devoted the residue ot my
lite. I have not attended putilic meetings or
discuspcd polities since I was paroled, nor have
1 cast a political vote since Mav, 18iil. I have
no desire to meddle in politics; in the tirst place,
liecauso by the burning of my property here by
General Hunter, and the confiscation of my pro
perty in WashiuQtou, I have been pecuniarily
ruined, and secondly, because 1 cannot see that
I can be of service to my own section or the
country at larce. The only service I can render
Is to give the country the benctit of my example
In showing a proper respect to the laws of the
land, and a practical obedience thereto. I will
be glad to hear Irom on at all times.
I am truly your friend,
John Letcher.
