CITY INTELLIGENCE
For Additional City Intelligence see 'Ihird Page.
Sudden Dkatu or a Young- Phila
delphia Journalist. We are called upon to
publish the sai announcement of the demise of
Mr. (Jeorge Collier Bower, a distinguished young
lournalist of this city. Mr. Bower died suddenly
this morning, of heart disease, at the residence
of his lather, northeast corner of Sixth and
Vine street. Mr. Bower had not yet reached
the prime of manhood; he was yet a single
man; and he wan beloved by all who knew
him. He combined rare qualities of
intellect with tho sweetest of dis
poBitions. His nature was entirely free
from guile, and his innocence of thought and
habit, speech and action, were really child
like, Ocoree Collier Bower was a native of
Philadelphia: he received a common school
education, and entered into the study ol phar
macy with his lather early in life. He made
rapid progress in this important science, but his
comprehensive mind meandered into other
studies, and Air, Bower soon became
one of our most proficient phonographic
reporters. Seven years ago he commenced his
journalistic life as reporter lor political can
vasses. - His -worth soon became apparent, and
he attached himself to the local staff of the
Evening Euiktin, where he at once took
rank as a lacile aud accomplished writer. Later
he w as engaged on the Philadelphia Inquirer, and
on that paper achieved his most notable suc
cesses. 1 Boon alter the commencement of the
Rebellion, Mr. Bower was sent to the front as
the principal special war correspondent of the
Philadelphia Inquirer, and his letters from the
Army of the Potomac gave their author a proud
name lor a pleasant and truthlul style. His
lettcis were always looked for with anxiety, and
read with satisfaction. The writer of this un
worthy notice met Mr. Bower on many a
bloody field of battle, and always - tound
him fnr in the front, with note-book
in baud, graphically chronicline the
passing events; amidst the lury of battle he was
utterly devoid of tear. A more intrepid and
nobly warluce nature- could not have been found
in the ranks than that possessed by the lamented
youutr subiect ot our sketch. In one of the
bloodiest conflicts near Richmond, while spur
ring his steed into the very flame of the enemy's
musketry, he wa9 severely wounded, and !ene
ral Heintzelman urged him to retire, but the
brave boy puttied on, holding himself- up, as he
said, "by grit," until he had obtained full par
ticulars of the buttle, and a list of the casualties
lor the next day's Inquirer.
Mr. Bower was a particular friend of Hon. II.
J. Raymond, and served as a special war. cor
respondent of the New York Tirnfs, with sreat
acceptability, lor a Considerable length of time.
After serving in his journalistic capacity
throughout all the cp.mpaiens of the Army of
the Potomac, Sir. Bower returned to his home in
Philad clph i a,and his services were at once secured
as local editor oi The Philadelphia Evening
Tellgraph, in which 'position he served faith
fully and ably until his failing health forced
him to relinquish his favorite profession.
Luring the past six or eight months he has suf
lered severely at times with the disease which
caused his death.
We have only space to add that Mr. Bower
was a true Christian; full of filial, fraternal, and
humane afl'ectin an honest man and a trusty
friend.
He wa- one of the oldest members of the Press
Club ot Philadelphia, and was elected the first
Secretary of that organization. A special meet
ing of the Club has been culled to do honor to
the memory oi the defeased. . . :
