tion ot Dr. Eetuill, tho apothecary, was also
accepted.
Tbe committee appointed to consider the pro
priety of introducing microscopic examina
tions at the Hospital reported affirmatively.
The Commttt e on SeaerRne reported that all
the sewers at the bouse were very detective,
especially in the insane department. Bach one
would be an open vluduct lor miasma and
cholera.
A resolution applying $1000 to the repair of
tbe drains was passed. Adjourned.
Public Meeting . A public temperance
meeting was held last evening, in tho Calvary
, Fresb) teriHn Church. Addresses were delivered
bv seveibl t-pe.akers eminently adapted to stir up
the minds and hearts oi those present in relation
to the noble, cause which called them togc her.
Dr. W. II. Cornell ravo the first addres, which
contained certain ttntistical fact-i that were of a
startling character In regard to the maznitude
ot the evil oi intemperance in our city.
The next speaker was tho tttv. John Moore,
who spoke in an earnest manner ot the etl'ec.s
ot drunkenness on the indivioual man.
The Kev. Mr. Call ins, pa-tor of the church,
and the Rev. Mr. Brbenck, ot Missouri, lollowed
with appropriate addresses, and the meeting
was roncluded with the benediction by Kev. Dr.
Junkin.
A Charitable Citizen. The will of
Clemens Erwisr, ot Twenty-iourth Ward, farmer,
jast proven and filed in the Reeiitcr o: Wills'
office of this city, gives to James F. Wood,
Bishop of Philadelphia, a lot of 8 acres anl 163J
perches, on the soutneast side of Darbt avenue
and Keventy-firbt street, for the erection of a
Catholic church. Also, a lot of ground at the
corner of Paschall avenue and Seventieth r.treet,
290 leet by 245 leet, to St. John's Male Orphan
Asylum. Also, a lot of pround at ihe corner of
Paschall avenue and 8eventy-flr9t street, 2!)6 feet
by 245 leet, tc St. Joseph's Female Orphan Asv
lum. He appoiu's Francis A. Erwig and Joseph
liegli the executors ot his will.
TriE Boot-Black Brigade. The good
work a.-iout, the newsboys and boot-blacks is
still on the advance. A well-re ilated school ik
held lor their benent on Sundav alternoons. in
Lorust street, above Ehrhth. On Sunday last
over loity of these bovt were thut brought to
gctner. Some who had hitherto eiven much
trouble are now among the best behaved. A
meeting ol the lady teucheia was held yesterday
alternoon lor the purpose ot adopting measure's
to clothe such as are worthy ot Dein helped.
Itcv. Mr. Toland is nctivrly enernecd in looking
alter the wants oi this interesting class of per
sons. A New Pabsegkb Depot. As soon
as tho Government relinquishes its use as a
storehouse, tne Pennsylvania Ra'lroad Company
will take possess ou 6i the big brieir market
house, in Tenth street, below Market, and use
it tor a passenger depot. Tbe railroad com
pany acquired the ownership of this property
tome time ago, and will convert it into a hand
some depot so soon as it comes fully into their
postession.
Cabs on Sunday. The Postmaster
Gencrul has directed the Pos'.master of thn city
to notity the Union Pasencer Railroad Com
pany that he will not permit any increase of
travel. Therefore the line will be permuted to
use but one car in carl morning and lute even
ing to perform the service ol the contract they
have purchased. Therefoie there will b- no
passenger travel on S.inday upon the line other
than that already existing.
IloeriTAL Cases. Henry Murray, aged
thirteen years, residing at No. 72G South Eighth
street, Iractured his le.lt arm yesterday aiter
noon by laihn on the pavement. Frederick
Shnbcr, aged thirty-bvo veain, broke his right

above Race. The above cases were admitted
into tt.e Pennsylvania Hospital during yes

bolts and chains, the property of the Pennsyl
vania Railroad Company. The accused was

A Child Eurned. About noon yesterday
Mary Zivoli, aged eight years, residing at No.
1731 I earl street, was seriously burnel by her
clo' lies taking fire irom the range. tJbe is not
expected to recover.
Oor Detective Police. The Detective

made 178 ariests. The value ol'eoods iccovered

month Jiibt closed the detectives made 35 arrests.

o'clock last evening a slight fire occurred at

Gentkel FKi.oNY.-Mr. A. K. Shurtlelf, of
Portland, went up to liostou last week, and
observing two men somewnat over-attentive in
' their manner, took precaution to guard bis
watch and wallet accordingly; but in spite of his
care, his diamond pin, worth two hundred dol
lars, was stolen troni under his noe without his
knowledge. He went to the detectives, who pro
ceeded str-tipht to the Cnnney Hotne, elfeet-d an
arrangement, and got back the pin on condi
tion that "no questions should be asked." Mr.
Shurtletf speaks in the highest terms of the Bos
ton detectives.
