The following, from Halt's Journal of Health,
will be read with interest by those who are
obliged to Ftudy close economy in their diet:

when they ate buckwheat cake and niolasfles
they were quiet lor a longer time than after
eating any other kind of lood.

Court observed t hut when lie took buckwheat
cakes for breakfast, he could sit on the bench
the whole day without being uncomfortably
hungry. If the cakes were omitted he felt
obliged to tako a lunch about noon. Buckwheat
cakes arc a uiiiveisul favoiite at the winter
breakla8t table, and scientific iuvetigatioo and
analysis have shown that they abound in the
heat-foroiing principle; hence nature takes away
our appetite tor them in summer.
During the Ir'j-h famine, when many died of
hunger, the poor were found Fpcnding their last
shilling lor tea, tobacco, and spirits. It has
also been observed In New York by those con
nected witb charitable institutions, that when
money was paid to the poor they often laid out
every cent in tea or coffee, instend ot procuring
the more subf-tantinl . lood, such as meat, or
flour and potatoes. On bung reproved tor their
apparent extravagance and Improvidence, the
cry was univeifaily in both cases identical;
their own observation hart ?hown thorn that a
penny's worth of tea, tobacco, or liquor would
keep oir the sense of hunger louacr than a
penny's worth of anything else. Scientific men
express the idea by saying, "Tea, like alcohol,
retards the metamorphosis of the ti-sues; in
other words, it gives fuel to tho flame of lite, end
thus prevents it lrom consuming the fat and Meh
of the body."
It a person gets into the habit of taking a lunch
between the breakfast and dinner he will soon
find Himself getting faint about the reeular
luncheon time, but let him be so pressed with
important engagements lor several days in suc
cession as to take nothing between meals, it will
not be long before ho can dispense with his
lunch altogether. These thincs'seeiu to show
that, to a certain extent, eating Is a mere habit.
Whole tribes of Indian hunters and trappers
have been known to eat but once in twenty-four
hours, and that at night.
