    FOREKiN SCIENCE.
ETHER VS. CHLOROFORM
The use of chloroform as an ann'3thcttc was
&Mj discussed in the Paris Academy of Science,
n a paper by Dr. Pctrcquln, of Lyons. He
favor the use ol ether, and shows that the
former Inconveniences attending its use have
been obviated. Dr. Pe'requin says:
These Inconveniences were removed by th
rthcrlzinjr bap, invented by a physician of
Lyons, and also by the tmproved methods de
vised for obtaining ether perfectly pure. At
present the operation of etherizing proceeds in
a most satisfactory manner. The patient lies in
a horizontal posture, with his head slightly
raised in order to prevent his wnllowinir any
ether; about twenty-lour prammei ot ether are
poured at once on the sponges ol the bap; the
pstient is directed to inhale copiously; tho
orifice of the bag is then closed, and the dose
of ether doubled. Tho patient's eyes are care
fully bandaged, and tho prolbundcst silence is
observed: in thisv.ay anieithesia is promptly
obtained without agitation. It Is easy to pre
vent accidents by closely observing the circu
lation and bieathino. In eeneral the pulse Is
first accelerated, then becomes regular again;
were it to become concentrated, irregular, or
low, the inhalations should be stopped, and air
administered. As to the breathing, it is at tirst
subdued, but soon becomes complete. It jt
were to become difficult or interrupted, the
apparatus should be removed and the Ian used.
In this way therp has not been a single death at
Lyons by etherization lor the lust fourteen years,
while, according to Dr. Velpeau's own showing,
the nse of chlorolorm is never unaccompanied
by danger.
To tins paper Dr. Vclpeau replied that there
had indeed been a lew deaths by chlorolorm.
but it was not quite certain that there had been
none by ether. At all events, ho (Dr. Vclpeau)
had for the last fllteen years been administering
chloroform to severrl thousand patients, una
had never seen any die from that cause.
"THB TKlDESt'orB."
At the lat sitting of the Academy of Sciences,
at the lustltute of France, Dr. Jules Cloquet
presented a very interesting optical Instrument,
called a "Tridescope" by its inventor, M. It.
Houdin, and by means of which the spectator
may see deeply into tho interior of his own eyes.
3nd follow the movements which take place
tiring the process of vision. This new discovery
will be of great service lo oculists by enabling
them to study the different and numeious mala
dies which affect the interior of the eve and in
jure the sight The Academy referred the In
strument and the paper which accompanied
it to MM. Becquerel and Foucault for examina
tion. UTILIZING MARSHES.
The Paris Acclimatization Society has pub
lished in its last bulletin a report from Dr. Sace
on the means of utilizing the marshes which
still coviT so large a portion of Central and
Northern Europe, and produce scarcely any
thing but rushes and pent. According 'to the
author of tho notice, that end might be at
tained by sowina them with Canada rice and
importing a certain number of beavers. Can
ada rice, which was brought mto notice some
years ago, is known to botanists as zizonia
aquatica. It has the appearance and qualities
of rye, and differs from tnnt grain solely in pre
ferring a marshy soil. While preen, it makes
excellent food for cattle, and when the corn is
ripe, it supplies excellent straw. The grain
itself may be eaten boiled like rice, or may be
ground and made into bread.
As for the beaver, which would give good
meat and admirable furs, it would remain most
readily in those matshes. This animal, which
lives on grass and the bark of trees, formerly
existed iu all tho European streams, but has
long sinco been everywhere destroyed.excppt
on a few points of the Rhine and the V istula.
Tho result of this wnr of iTtrminntirvn la t.hnt
European furriers annually send large sums to I
America to purchase beaver-skins which might I
be pioduced at home almost without cost, by
Veeping these animals in a half-domesticated
state in the marshes, after first planting the
latter with willows, alders, beeches, poplars,
and other soft-wooded trees, the bark of which
is the beaver's favorite food. Like Canada rice,
these valuable amphibious animals can endure
the most rigorous climate. The Berlin and
Moscow Societies of Acclimatization have every
interest in seconding this attempt, "which, it suc
cessful, would give a considerable value to an
immense extent of land at present producing
next 10 nothing.
AVIATION.
At a late meeting of the Paris Academy of
Sciences, a paper was received from M. Seguin
on aerial navigation, or rather aviation, as it is
termed, because it is founded, not on the prin
ciple of a gas lighter than air, but on that of
the wings of birds, whose bodies, thoueh heavier
than air, are easily conveyed through it. Avia
tion, therefore, depends on a more or les cor
rect imitation of the mechanical conditions of
avial organism.
ANIMAL ELECTRICITY.
The number ot fish provided with an electrical
apparatus is not great, being limited to eighteen
species of the torpedo, or two of the Gymnotus,
two of the Mormyru8, and one of the Malapteru
rus. M. Charles Robin announces, in a paper
addressed to the Paris Academy, that the ray
possesses a similar apparatus. Thus there are
two kinds of seatish that are decidedly electrical,
the torpedo and the ray.
M. Eobin's experiments were not of easy exe
cution. The ray is usually caught at an hour's
sailing at least from the coast," and it does not
live more than twenty minutes out of its element.
Owing to ita size and shape, it is not easy to
keep in a vessel with sea water; nor is it possi
ble to conduct delicate physiological and elec
trical experiments in a fit-bing boat; so that for
a long time M. Robin's efforts were fruitless.
Fortuuatcly the experimental basins now built
at Coucameau, under the supent.tfndence of M.
Coste, have removed these difficulties. The
aquaria at that place are large basins in which
the sea water is constantly renewed bv the tide,
and iu which fish may live and multiply under
the mot advantageous circumstances, ilere M.
Robin carried on his experiments with a gal
vanometer, and a Hullicient number of electro
scopic frogs. Sometimes the my, when out of
the water, makes violent muscular eilorts, and
flaps its pectoral fins.
During these efforts an electric discharge is
scarcely ever obtained, but alter a few seconds'
rest there comes a succession of small dis
charges. At other times the tish remains quiet
lor three or four minutes, and then begins as
before to make great exertions, during which
the galvanometer ana the frous give no sisrn of
electricity, and then comes a short period of
rest, when a few discharges are obtained. Iu
some instances, however, after three or four
minutes of rest, the animal suddenly and volun
tarily discharges electricity. Discharges may
also be obtained by pricking, pinching, or other
wise excitiua: the fish. But, under whutever cir
cumstances the phenomenon be produced, it is
always accompanied by a slictt motion of the
ocular globes and a contraction of the bronchial
cavity, as also by similar contractions of the
caudal firs. It is well known tbat similar
motions are observed in the torpedo t the
moment of a discharge.
Postmaster-General Denulon is having
printed a postacre 6 tamo of the denomination ot
fifteen cenu, which will soon be ready lor Issue.
A stamp of this price, it was found, was greatly
needed fir the payment of postage on quarter
ounce letters for France. On the face of the
stamp is a finely executed portrait of Abraham
Lincoln.
Campo Bello Island, an attaek on which by
the Fnians has been predicted by the sensa
tional papers of New York, is in the Bay of
Fundy, at the entrance of PasHamaquoddy Bay.
It is about eight miles in length, by three in
breadth, and in a part of the territory of New
Brunswick. St. John's, with Its rich shipping
and commodious harbor, is about forty miles
distant from Campo Bello, and can be reached
In a few hours by means of steam communica
tion. Directly opposite is the coast of Nova
ttcoti. thirty-six to lorty miles distant, with
good liurbor for light vessels.
